Supermarket staff wearing a keffiyeh

I saw a member of staff wearing a keffiyeh today in Sainsbury’s. Do you think it’s a bit too political for a member of staff to be wearing, whilst wearing their work uniform?

You are disturbed by some headgear. He's probably disturbed by your intolerance.

Lambington · 07/03/2025 23:19

Its great to live in a country where we have freedom of expression.

Ladamesansmerci · 07/03/2025 23:20

Even if it was a political statement, we live in a country where we can wear what we like. I don't have to like people wearing MAGA hates (and indeed I would avoid any moron wearing that like the plague), but they are free to wear them.

VioletVX · 07/03/2025 23:20

MammTorr · 07/03/2025 22:51

But you can wear a cross if you're Christian

A keffiyeh is a national symbol, not a religious one. And when worn by people who are not members of that national group, it is a political symbol.

ButchCassidysSundanceKid · 07/03/2025 23:21

To everyone saying "it's not religious" so therefore unnecessary for people to wear it. In December loads of people wear Christmas jumpers/antlers/sparkly jewellery. Also not religious, but it's a outward display of festive culture to allow people to outwardly show they're celebrating the period. Wearing the keffiyeh during Ramadan is no different, it's only bothering people because it's connected to Islam.

You have no evidence for this. Why do so many people assume people associated with Islam are being "political". Put down the Daily Mail and stop getting offended by people whose choice of dress ultimately has zero impact on your day to day life.

PollyHutchen · 07/03/2025 23:26

This is a scary time to be Jewish. I think businesses should discourage their employees from wearing clothing that is politically partisan, though there should be accommodations for items that are part of people's religious observance eg the hijab.

It's a pretty miserable time to be Palestinian as well, tbh

Izzy54321 · 07/03/2025 23:28

@HangryLikeTheHulk The same Palestinian's that murdered the Bibs babies? Sorry but they aren’t being blown to smithereens either, stop watching the BBC and find out how the IDF are going house to house rather than just sending in bombs.

Safxxx · 07/03/2025 23:28

Look away OP if it bothers you so much, don't be served by them if it hurts your pride. I'm surprised it effects you that much you started a thread 😂 I'm wondering did the Gen**ide have any impact on you at all 🤔 if not then let others show love & support if they wish to atleast 🙏

scorpiogirly · 07/03/2025 23:29

I wonder if many people on this thread would classify Hamas as a terrorist organisation? Genuinely curious.

Rightsraptor · 07/03/2025 23:30

It's not in the least bit fine. It's totally unacceptable and I'd never enter that store again. I'd never enter a shop that displays the progress pride flag, or any other political statement either. They are businesses, in trade to make money and not display their political beliefs.

Its an obvious political statement and had no place being worn at work, especially by staff in uniform.

If someone wearing kuffiyeh in Sainos means you think it's scary to be Jewish I’m glad I follow my Judaism and not yours and I hope you feel better soon.

What genocide would that be? There has been no genocide of Palestinians

You're associating a headress worn by millions with a terrorist organisation? OK then.

Gbishywoo · 07/03/2025 23:31

Is it any different to wearing a Christmas jumper? It’s Ramadan let her be 👏

Not sure what you’re talking about there, just some fantasy of yours ?

How the hell do you wreak this level of destruction “going house to house” ?

And to stay on topic, having empathy for civilians in Gaza does not prevent you having empathy with Israelis murdered in the October attacks.

Wearing a keffiyah in Tesco does not mean you want to murder Israeli babies.

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, I think it’s nice. Let’s be grateful to live in a country where people can dress how they want . No one should have to feel afraid to dress how they feel

Apart from those who have been told to remove a Christian cross on a chain as it offends other religions, yes?

They mean Hamas's genocidal acts on October 7th, surely.

The International Criminal Court thinks that there's enough evidence for this to at least be looked at.

Oh come on....stop making this to be a hate crime.....if someone is showing solidarity with the Palestinians it's just that and not a threat to anyone else.....do you remember when the Ukrainian flags were being waved around? Did they wave them to threat russian ppl or show their solidarity with Ukraine.

What's that got to do with some bloke in Sainsbury's? Wearing a keffiyeh doesn't make someone a supporter of Hamas.

Nevertrustacop · 07/03/2025 23:36

If it breaches the uniform policy, it shouldn't be worn. I would hope it did breach the policy. It would wherever I have worked.

ummymummy · 07/03/2025 23:39

OP, genuine question: did you find it too political when the Ukraine flag was everywhere?

TheCatterall · 07/03/2025 23:39

many of my friends wearing them right now during Ramadan - please educate yourself @Alpaccas. quick google can often help you out.
