Supermarket staff wearing a keffiyeh

Alpaccas · 07/03/2025 22:35

I saw a member of staff wearing a keffiyeh today in Sainsbury’s. Do you think it’s a bit too political for a member of staff to be wearing, whilst wearing their work uniform?

That poster was talking about being Jewish and the effect on her life. She is not Israeli. And Israeli are not all Jews.

Huh? Who said that they were?

She isn't Palestinian but she has been able to 'wonder' about their symbols, surely she can 'wonder' about Israeli symbols and what they mean too.

I think you perhaps need to look into this more, and the history of the war - because frankly you’re wrong. How long do you think Israel existed before being invaded simply because Jewish people were there? Take a guess

Are you talking about the past because you don't want to talk about the present ?

The present where Israel(actually Netanyahu)have rejected an attempt by other Arab countries to allow Gazans to stay in Palestine without Hamas and instead allied themselves with the vision of a Trump Rivera with no Palestinians present.

What is an “Israeli symbol”?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 08/03/2025 10:14

Was it Asda?

Those in Israel have repeatedly voted for a government that are actively ethnically cleansing the West Bank and have been for along time. 10% of Israelis live in illegal settlements on occupied land taken from Palestinians illegally by force. This is supported by a government voted in repeatedly by Israelis. Just last month 40000 people have been driven from their homes, from their communities and livelihoods in the West Bank and the Israeli government voted in by the people of Israel have said they will never allow back to their homes.

Do you feel equally concerned when someone wears something that may be associated with Israel that they may support this ethnic cleansing of Palestinians that has been happening slowly for decades?

Hard agree. A previous poster brought up WW2 treatment of the Jews to try to support what they’re doing in Palestine. I would argue the opposite. I simply don’t understand why any race who have suffered at the hands of those who tried to eliminate them, would behave in the same way to any other race. Israel is a self confessed expansionist state and have systematically taken by force land which doesn’t belong to them and in so doing wiped out thriving communities. Why would people think Palestinians would welcome that with open arms ?

If someone wore a badge or item of clothing that specifically sent out the message “Palestinians should leave the West Bank and Gaza now” I would have issues with that, yes. I have never seen such a badge.

AthWat · 08/03/2025 10:17

Izzy54321 · 08/03/2025 09:57

@AthWat I am Jewish, my family are living in Isreal and they keep me updated on what is happening. I would believe them over the BBC at any given time. It is a war in war there are deaths, terrible on both sides. But you have to admit the murder of the two small Bibas babies is horrific. The celebrations that took place afterwards were unhinged so yes those Palestinians. Why would anyone think that it’s ok the handing over of hostages the mental anguish of those two hostages in the mini bus begging to be released only to be driven away!!! I have had hate from my neighbours that once spoke to me just fine, at work people question my belief on why don’t Jews leave their country?? Why don’t they live somewhere else this is my new day to day as a Jew in Britain.

It's not OK to kill 1200 innocent people as Hamas did, and nobody is saying it was.

It's not OK to kill nearly 50,000 mainly innocent people as the Israelis have done. Is anyone saying it was? Are you? You seem to be saying that anyone who celebrated is fair game to be killed. Not sure how you'd know who did or didn't but, leaving that aside, are you happy to acknowledge that position?

BobbyBiscuits · 08/03/2025 10:17

I wouldn't pay any attention to it. Whatever they were wearing I'd assume was fine with their manager. Is it preventing them from stacking shelves, showing people things or taking payment? I doubt it.
You can't be certain it was political anyway. And so what if it was frankly. What's happening over there is a disgrace to humanity.

AzurePanda · 08/03/2025 10:17

@Lovelysausagedogscrumpy what evidence do I have that suggests the majority of Gazans support Hamas?

For starters the absence of any visible movement akin to those incredibly brave women in Iran. Then of course there’s the mass celebration in the streets as news of October 7 broke, the mass cheering as the raped and broken bodies of female victims were paraded. Then of course there’s the disgusting display as the bodies of the Bibas family were presented. Where’s the significant online opposition to any of this within Gaza? Where’s the uprising?

NicolaCasanova · 08/03/2025 09:54

Make sure you also complain about any staff wearing items reflecting IWD today.

I would just shop elsewhere if I didn’t like something.

How is that the same?

They are not behaving in the same way. Israel has not set up a series of death camps, transported millions of Palestinians on cattle trucks and gassed them to death.

I suggest you google the term "holocaust inversion"

28Fluctuations · 08/03/2025 10:19

Wear a keffiyah in the street, at home, to the pub, whatever. Have at it.

Leave it off at work. Not everyone agrees with you. It makes some people feel victimised and frightened and angry. See also: 'inclusive' rainbow lanyards, and that NHS receptionist with a Reform t-shirt beneath her open cardie earlier this week 🙄.

Branleuse · 08/03/2025 10:19

If someone wants to wear a keffiyeh then they should be able to.

RubyTuesday48 · 08/03/2025 10:20

MammTorr · 07/03/2025 22:51

It's Ramadan!

It has nothing to do with Ramadan! The keffiyeh is a scarf that symbolizes Palestinian identity, resistance, and solidarity. It is not a religious symbol, but a political one.

Uniform guidelines do exist though. And Sainsbury's look quite strict.

What "quarters" are trying to do this as you say?

I agree with @Coolasfeck

The genocide of Palestinians isn't going to be whitewashed.

3peassuit · 08/03/2025 10:21

I’d see it more as an expression of religious or cultural identity like a turban or a veil. It wouldn’t cross my mind that it was political.

There is more than one way to wipe out a race of people. Destroying their country and stealing their land, while denying them access to food, water and heathcare. Systemic destruction.

Bigham · 08/03/2025 09:52

What’s people’s opinions on health care staff wearing full hair coverings when patient facing ? Hijab I think they’re called. As we’ve taken on more international nurses, more of my colleagues wear them. Must admit, I’ve got mixed feelings but I’m not sure why and appreciate it’s probably irrational.

The hijab is not a political statement. It's expressing her religion. Same with a cross necklace, or a yarmulke. All fine.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 08/03/2025 10:24

OKNerd · 08/03/2025 09:57

Oh yes those pesky Jews are just lying about how bad they have it. Like in the 1930’s they lied then too.

Why do you expect footage for rape?? Is this for all rapes or just rapes if Israelis?

Im sure the Jew hating terrorist group popped them all down on a comfy sofa and made them a cup of tea Hmm

They’re not ‘lying about how bad they have it’ they’re engaging in the same oppression of another race that they themselves were subjected to. If you read the links in that post you’ll find there were some vile accusations of abuse which simply don’t hold water. Propaganda. That’s the nature of war.

RubyTuesday48 · 08/03/2025 10:25

OKNerd · 08/03/2025 10:14

What is an “Israeli symbol”?

There are none. The only symbols would be those of the Jewish religion such as a Star of David necklace. Sadly many younger Jews no longer wear one for fear of being attacked. I'm older and therefore invisible so continue to wear mine. A keffiyah is not a religious symbol.

LBFseBrom · 08/03/2025 10:25

I still do not 'get' why this bothers the op so much.

justasking111 · 08/03/2025 10:26

I wouldn't have noticed. Mind you I've never noticed people in pyjamas shopping either. As long as it's not a danger to the user, does it matter?
