Supermarket staff wearing a keffiyeh

I saw a member of staff wearing a keffiyeh today in Sainsbury’s. Do you think it’s a bit too political for a member of staff to be wearing, whilst wearing their work uniform?

What’s people’s opinions on health care staff wearing full hair coverings when patient facing ? Hijab I think they’re called. As we’ve taken on more international nurses, more of my colleagues wear them. Must admit, I’ve got mixed feelings but I’m not sure why and appreciate it’s probably irrational.

I have absolutely no issue with Muslim women wearing the hijab in a work setting or any setting....why would I? It's a totally different thing

Make sure you also complain about any staff wearing items reflecting IWD today.

I would just shop elsewhere if I didn’t like something.

Women are not a terrorist group.

But then a baseball cap and a beanie have no religious significance do they ?

Sainsbury's still have rules around what you can wear. I doubt it's allowed, their guidelines sound pretty strict.

Hamas ARE Palestine! They run it! And an alarming number of Palestinians demonstrably support Hamas and the murdering of Jews.

Are you going to answer my other questions?

Why did you think about Palestinians strangling a baby and toddler and returning the wrong body of their mother?

So by your logic, Isrealis are the government and the IDF, both guilty of committing war crimes? Are you sure you want to run with that argument?

Izzy54321 · 08/03/2025 09:57

@AthWat I am Jewish, my family are living in Isreal and they keep me updated on what is happening. I would believe them over the BBC at any given time. It is a war in war there are deaths, terrible on both sides. But you have to admit the murder of the two small Bibas babies is horrific. The celebrations that took place afterwards were unhinged so yes those Palestinians. Why would anyone think that it’s ok the handing over of hostages the mental anguish of those two hostages in the mini bus begging to be released only to be driven away!!! I have had hate from my neighbours that once spoke to me just fine, at work people question my belief on why don’t Jews leave their country?? Why don’t they live somewhere else this is my new day to day as a Jew in Britain.

Whilst I don't support Hamas and what they did on October 7th, there are many agencies who have worked to debunk the claims of 40 beheaded babies and mass rapes. Tech companies are still scouring footage to find evidence of sexual violence by Hamas. ZAKA has admitted its initial belief of rape and a baby being pulled from its mother's womb are incorrect but these stories were spread by the media and certain presidents before they could be fact-checked and for some, they have stuck.

What is clear though, is that the Israeli government and the IDF are committing war crimes. There were nearly 10,000 Palestinian hostages before October 7th. Some of them children. Some have grown up in captivity. They aren't prisoners; they are hostages, detained without charge. Many have been tortured. Nearly 500 health workers murdered; over 20,000 children murdered; over 45,000 civilians murdered with a likely figure of over 100,000 and more. Those bodies are encounter and remain under the rubble that was once Gaza.

So, if someone wants to wear a Kuffiyeh to show solidarity with an occupied people living in an apartheid system, who have been systematically murdered since 1948 and are now suffering a genocide by their military occupiers, I'd give them a huge hug and say thank you for having the courage to show your humanity, at risk of being disciplined or even losing your job. Bravo to that person and freedom, peace and equal rights for Palestinians!

Oh yes those pesky Jews are just lying about how bad they have it. Like in the 1930’s they lied then too.

Why do you expect footage for rape?? Is this for all rapes or just rapes if Israelis?

Im sure the Jew hating terrorist group popped them all down on a comfy sofa and made them a cup of tea Hmm

That’s for religious reasons and is completely different

I think that what happened to the Bibas family (and the other hostages and victims of October 7th) is beyond horrendous and unjustifiable.

The fact that this conflict has caused the highest number of child amputees and there are 38000 orphans in Gaza?

With an explosive cord tied on his neck, the senior was forced by army to scout buildings, and shot dead on his release.

It’s Ramadan and they were probably wearing it in advance (or after) Friday prayers.
you know anyone can be Muslim?

Do you remember when we were proud of supermarket workers in COVID? I'm pretty sure the odd worker does wear a beanie with their uniform near me, shock horror the ones who aren't white and with non European hairstyles. Can't be certain it's actually a beanie and not some other kind of hat because I don't think I've given it much attention.

This threads seem to be constant at the moment. Whilst I agree that political statements in a supposedly politically neutral organisation with your flags on your teams profile picture isn't appropriate (was that yesterday's complaint or the day before?) I really can't get concerned about a bit of cloth on a supermarket worker. Nobody really believes that represents the huge cooperation do they? Seems to be a concerted effort to complain constantly wasn't it aircraft crew with language badges before that or someone with a watermelon T shirt?

People will have different views to you, even if you police everything they wear or their views are unlikely to change. Some people will have strong political motivation connected to these items and others will have totally different intentions like some of those given on this thread.

The Israeli government is not a terrorist group. HTH. Israelis are conscripted to the IDF and for good reasons - some commit war crimes as in any Army (such as the British army). But the IDF’s charter isn’t to annihilate Muslims of the face off the earth.

When worn by white, middle class students with no link to the Middle East the keffiyeh becomes a political symbol designed to signal a specific stance ie. solidarity with the Palestinians. I’m sure we all wish to see an end to the war in Gaza but remember those in Gaza voted for Hamas on the mandate to destroy Israel and the Jews. The war is the sad consequence of that.

As a Jew the keffiyeh makes my feel deeply uncomfortable. I wonder how far the wearer supports the Palestinian cause. Do they also wish to see an end to the state of Israel and the death of all Jews?

You may tell me that the keffiyeh doesn’t mean this at all, but I wonder if there are any other ethnic minorities who you would tell what they should find racist or not.

Those in Israel have repeatedly voted for a government that are actively ethnically cleansing the West Bank and have been for along time. 10% of Israelis live in illegal settlements on occupied land taken from Palestinians illegally by force. This is supported by a government voted in repeatedly by Israelis. Just last month 40000 people have been driven from their homes, from their communities and livelihoods in the West Bank and the Israeli government voted in by the people of Israel have said they will never allow back to their homes.

Do you feel equally concerned when someone wears something that may be associated with Israel that they may support this ethnic cleansing of Palestinians that has been happening slowly for decades?

cinnamongirl123 · 08/03/2025 10:00

I was in a&e the other day and a staff member was wearing a "Free Palestine" badge. Made me sick, and I will file a complaint.

Whatsinanamehey · 08/03/2025 10:00

What about Hind Rajab that was brutally murdered by the IDF? Or does she not count because she was Palestinian.

Obviously it’s terrible - which goes back to my point of Palestine shouldn’t have started the war. And they shouldn’t continue the war.

I think you perhaps need to look into this more, and the history of the war - because frankly you’re wrong. How long do you think Israel existed before being invaded simply because Jewish people were there? Take a guess

sprigatito · 08/03/2025 10:07

AzurePanda · 08/03/2025 09:51

@Martymcfly24 what evidence is there to show that the majority of Gazans don’t support Hamas?

The majority of "Gazans" (they are Palestinians) are too young ever to have voted for Hamas. Are the babies and toddlers slaughtered in their thousands "terrorists" too?

And it shouldn't need pointing out, but murdering thousands of people because you believe they - or their parents - support a group you want to eliminate is illegal as well as morally indefensible.

Oh ok....see I thought appreciating low paid workers in scary time was a nice effort even if the some of the methods were cringey in my opinion. But like I said people will have different views.
