Supermarket staff wearing a keffiyeh

I saw a member of staff wearing a keffiyeh today in Sainsbury’s. Do you think it’s a bit too political for a member of staff to be wearing, whilst wearing their work uniform?

I agree. This thread was started in pure bad faith and ignorance. Objecting to what another person wears and stereotyping people based on their support for innocent people being murdered.

Innocent people always die in wars on both sides. Which is perhaps a good reason to NOT start a war, don’t you think?

When worn by white, middle class students with no link to the Middle East the keffiyeh becomes a political symbol designed to signal a specific stance ie. solidarity with the Palestinians. I’m sure we all wish to see an end to the war in Gaza but remember those in Gaza voted for Hamas on the mandate to destroy Israel and the Jews. The war is the sad consequence of that.

As a Jew the keffiyeh makes my feel deeply uncomfortable. I wonder how far the wearer supports the Palestinian cause. Do they also wish to see an end to the state of Israel and the death of all Jews?

You may tell me that the keffiyeh doesn’t mean this at all, but I wonder if there are any other ethnic minorities who you would tell what they should find racist or not.

Great post. I'm Jewish too and feel the same but you articulated it much better than me!

Switcher · 08/03/2025 09:40

Yes I think it's unacceptable but it's also a bit futile to post on here.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/03/2025 09:40

Unless the person started banging on about freeing Palestine while I was paying I doubt I would have taken much notice. My dentist wears a Palestine pin, if he started talking about it I'd be looking for a new dentist but he doesn't so it's not a problem.

It’s unprofessional and performative virtue signalling - such is the Zeitgeist.

Any country that uses an 80 year old man as a human shield and shoots a 12 year old and prevents an ambulance from helping him deserves every bit "performative actions" around the world to call them out.

Would you feel the same way if someone wore a t-shirt at work supporting Zionism?

What about a country that takes hundreds of people hostages and strangles a baby and toddler?

Do you think that Israel was the first country to take innocent lives? Or the only country? What do you think would happen if they stopped defending themselves tomorrow? And why do you think Israel was created in the first place?

No, they have a right to wear it completely.

What about a t-shirt supporting a terrorist group such as Isis?

So you think when people are working in customer facing roles, there should be no rules at all as regards what they wear,? They can express any political views or opinion they want?

Loads of people in the uk think this is a symbol of freedom and not supporting of rapist baby killing Hamas. They are so desperate to virtue signal. People in this country are so woefully uninformed about the Middle East and this particular conflict.

I suppose it shows the enduring power of propaganda. There's plenty of it on both sides but obviously the terrorist side is winning.

Palestine did not do those terrible actions Hamas did.

To conflate the two is horrendous.

AzurePanda · 08/03/2025 09:51

@Martymcfly24 what evidence is there to show that the majority of Gazans don’t support Hamas?

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 08/03/2025 09:51

scorpiogirly · 07/03/2025 22:49

I agree. It isn't part of the uniform. You wouldn't be allowed to wear a baseball cap or a beanie etc would you?

Edited

But then a baseball cap and a beanie have no religious significance do they ?

I think that they should follow the uniform policy no matter what the employers is, but I agree with being allowed to support whichever "side" that is and once that is not offensive about others it should be allowed.

ThereIsThunderInOurHearts · 08/03/2025 09:52

Whilst I don't support Hamas and what they did on October 7th, there are many agencies who have worked to debunk the claims of 40 beheaded babies and mass rapes. Tech companies are still scouring footage to find evidence of sexual violence by Hamas. ZAKA has admitted its initial belief of rape and a baby being pulled from its mother's womb are incorrect but these stories were spread by the media and certain presidents before they could be fact-checked and for some, they have stuck.

What is clear though, is that the Israeli government and the IDF are committing war crimes. There were nearly 10,000 Palestinian hostages before October 7th. Some of them children. Some have grown up in captivity. They aren't prisoners; they are hostages, detained without charge. Many have been tortured. Nearly 500 health workers murdered; over 20,000 children murdered; over 45,000 civilians murdered with a likely figure of over 100,000 and more. Those bodies are encounter and remain under the rubble that was once Gaza.

So, if someone wants to wear a Kuffiyeh to show solidarity with an occupied people living in an apartheid system, who have been systematically murdered since 1948 and are now suffering a genocide by their military occupiers, I'd give them a huge hug and say thank you for having the courage to show your humanity, at risk of being disciplined or even losing your job. Bravo to that person and freedom, peace and equal rights for Palestinians!

What evidence is there to show that they do ? Hamas won’t allow democratic elections. Why do you think that is ?

Hamas ARE Palestine! They run it! And an alarming number of Palestinians demonstrably support Hamas and the murdering of Jews.

Are you going to answer my other questions?

Why did you think about Palestinians strangling a baby and toddler and returning the wrong body of their mother?

What’s people’s opinions on health care staff wearing full hair coverings when patient facing ? Hijab I think they’re called. As we’ve taken on more international nurses, more of my colleagues wear them. Must admit, I’ve got mixed feelings but I’m not sure why and appreciate it’s probably irrational.

A country of people governed by a terrorist organisation. They aren’t just a small faction in the corner that the rest of the country don’t like to associate with

NicolaCasanova · 08/03/2025 09:54

Make sure you also complain about any staff wearing items reflecting IWD today.

I would just shop elsewhere if I didn’t like something.

Downplaying the amount of hate towards Jewish people in the Arab world is gaslighting. Israel are vulnerable from all their neighbours. Why do you think they’re have conscription? Because they will always need an ample army
