Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

It’s not that unusual. I have done the matching pj thing twice for friends’ weddings. It’s nice to have something to wear when you are getting make up done/photos taken.

Edited

Sorry I’m sure your guests will love it, I’ve just never seen it or been to that sort of wedding.

Bleekers · 07/03/2025 17:01

It’s her wedding & she can be a food snob if she wants! Don’t bother wasting your time.

This past summer I had “treats” brought from Greece at a wedding. Lord knows where those were made. I didn’t ask, I ate - eating is voluntary.

Theres loads of cute presentation boxes, bags, stickers from labels & ingredients…. I would not bother for her, she made her wishes known. She can put Oreos in.

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 07/03/2025 17:02

I’d eat it. And I can guarantee most the people on here saying they wouldn’t would scoff the buggery out of any cake they found in their hotel room after a load of wedding wines.

GreenCandleWax · 07/03/2025 17:02

The church I go to has endless events where there are home-made cakes. Everyone contributes one. Its almost in the DNA of the congregation. I have never once thought to question how safe they are, and they are always lovely. Your idea is great OP. As someone said, if you label it with info about nuts gluten etc. guests can decide for themselves. I'd bet they'll all get eaten.

OK then - ecology aside matching pyjama s for getting ready is just cringe. There you made me say it

Well luckily for you, you're not part of the wedding party and aren't expected to wear them.

Brownie you say?

Exceptional you say?

I'd have scoffed that before any thought of who made what where had occurred to me.

Would you care to share the recipe?

Ha! Me too…

shprinkle · 07/03/2025 17:03

I’d eat them.

Also here for the recipe please!

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/03/2025 17:03

@PrimitivePerson

The prevailing view on MN is that every single other human being in the world is irredeemably filthy and contaminated with every disease it's possible to contract. Even touching something they once touched might kill you

See also:

  • people who are outraged at the prospect of other people wearing "outdoor clothes" while sitting or lying on their own bed
  • people who have to put a towel on the bed before sex or change the sheets within seconds of finishing
  • people who insist that guests wash their hands on entry to the home and make them remove their shoes

It makes me wonder how people actually cope with day to day life with the hysterical levels of germ phobia.

TortolaParadise · 07/03/2025 17:04

I would not be grossed out but I would re-gift it without anyone knowing.

newnamesix · 07/03/2025 17:07

I think the care packages (or whatever people want to call them) sound lovely - fun and thoughtful. I would absolutely eat the brownies and anyone who doesn't want to can pass them on.

The only time I can recall not eating something from a hygiene perspective was at a lovely little French cafe in south ken. The hipster guy behind the counter kept scratching his head and his exposed midriff while making my sandwich, which was pretty gross.

My motto is, if I don't see it, I assume it's fine and I'm never ever ever ill. I've probably even unknowingly ingested some cat hair and toddler snot in my lifetime.

Enjoy. The funny thing is I just google searched it and it's not even the only one on this site.

"Presumably he isn't pointing his bum directly at the food?"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 07/03/2025 17:09

I would without any worries at all.
All the people on this thread commenting that they wouldnt - presumably you are happy to eat shop bought cakes etc - dont be kidding yourself they are better 1) they'll usually be full of additives, preservatives, weird ingredients its better not to eat 2) just as likely to potentially not be made in hygienic conditions. Ive encounted eg a tooth in a sweet. And a bit of jewellery in a tin of sweetcorn!

Home made stuff will be freshly made with nothing but ingredients readily available made in shops and will be lovingly made with care. Healthier and nicer by far.

BIossomtoes · 07/03/2025 17:09

When I think of all the things of unknown origin I’ve eaten in 70 years I wouldn’t think twice. It’s unbelievable that people are this precious.

theJackofHearts · 07/03/2025 17:10

I wouldn't even think about it

Poonu · 07/03/2025 17:10

I wouldn't eat it but wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings so might lie and say they were delicious and bin them.
I don't think I would be alone in this behavior.

Tormundsbeard · 07/03/2025 17:12

Bake sales at school and at the office…. All feature homemade cakes and biscuits that everyone eats and are absolutely fine afterwards.

what are people talking about??

WonderingAboutThus · 07/03/2025 17:13

It wouldn't occur to me not to eat it, and love it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/03/2025 17:13

Do people literally throw away home-food in the bin rather than give it to someone else who will eat it? That sort of food waste would bother me far more than any hygiene issues. No need for lies either.

lifeonmars100 · 07/03/2025 17:15

why do they need care packages, are they ill? it is just that I associate that expression with people being unwell or having a tough time. As for the cakes, just make sure they are labelled as being home made and what they contain because people do have allergies

SunnyWarrington · 07/03/2025 17:15

Without getting into the merits of who has the better brownie recipe (obviously, I think I do, but just to be clear, I am joking here) I think this would be a lovely thing to do. When I got married, I made 250 for the later part of the night, and there were none left by the following morning, so most people I know like homemade... I believe one friend did pocket about ten to take back to his hotel for a 4am snack!
If the budget allows, you could get some of those mini cake-boxes with a window in them, and make up some stickers with "Busy Traybakes" on them - and I'm not just referencing your username here, I do actually mean to write Busy Traybakes likes it's a professional company. Unless the guests are on here reading this, most won't look past the company name - set up an Insta page, you might even get repeat orders!

godmum56 · 07/03/2025 17:15

Its a lovely idea but I don't know you and haven't seen you kitchen or hygiene habits so I wouldn't eat it sorry.

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 17:15

Ingredients
3/4 cup salted butter, cubed 170 grams before browning, 140 grams after
4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, choppedChocolate chips work, too
1/4 cup vegetable oil 56 mL
3/4 cup cocoa powder 63 grams
3 large eggs, at room temperature
1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar 158 grams
1 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar 174 grams
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup all-purpose flour 65 grams
pinch of espresso powder optional
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips You can omit this in a pinch, but it does create delightful pockets of melted chocolate in each brownie!

  • Prep: Preheat your oven to 350℉. Spray an8×8 metal pan with nonstick spray and line with parchment paper (this makes for easy removal & slicing later).
  • Note: A 9×9 pan is fine, too. Start with about 6-7 minutes less bake time as the layer of brownie will be thinner.
  • Brown the Butter: Add cubed butter to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Melt the butter, stirring occasionally. Once it's melted, turn the heat to medium-low, and continue cooking the butter, stirring frequently. The butter will get foamy and bubbly, then turn a deep golden shade with a nutty, caramely aroma. (This will take about 3-6 minutes once the butter has melted.)
  • Once the butter is browned, stir in your semi-sweet chocolate until completely melted, then whisk in the vegetable oil and cocoa powder. Set aside to cool slightly.
  • Make the Brownie Batter: In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, egg yolk, and granulated sugar. Whisk for about 1-2 minutes, until the sugar is fully dissolved. (Feel the mixture between your fingers – if it's completely smooth, you're good! If you feel sugar granules, keep whisking.) Next, whisk in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt. Then, check that the chocolate mixture is no longer piping hot (it will be quite warm, though), and whisk it into the bowl of eggs/sugar/. Fold in the flour & espresso powder, then the chocolate chips. The brownie batter won't be very thick.
  • Bake: Pour the batter into your prepared pan, and bake for 29 to 32 minutes. The center will have the slightest wobble when you move the pan, and the outer edges will appear set.

I know it’s hard but leave the brownies overnight. They really do taste so much better the next day. Add hazelnut cream and broken up kinder bueno or Ferrero Rochers for even more decadence

I suppose it depends who baked it, but I’m not gonna lie and pretend I’m fussy when it comes to cake / baked goods 🤣
And I haven’t died yet!
