Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

But the cakes are cooked! Any germs would be burned off in the cooking process - so then you've only got to worry about the cleanliness of the packing up procedure and - what the eye doesn't see and all that. I have no idea how some people live with their fear of 'what other people might do in their kitchen'. OK, if there's a noro outbreak I might look twice, but otherwise.. Yep, still here.

Breadcat24 · 07/03/2025 16:49

OK then - ecology aside matching pyjama s for getting ready is just cringe. There you made me say it

Iwantmyoldnameback · 07/03/2025 16:49

So all those people who buy cakes at McMillan Coffee Mornings and other fund raising events just take them home and chuck them? How very odd.

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 16:51

I’m pulling up the recipe and will share. Having an isssue with email account passwords

If you have never made brownies with the Morrisons Hazenut and white chocolate spread and broken up kinder bueno I urge you to RUN to Morrisons now.

It's a lovely idea OP, and guests can choose not to eat them if they don't want them.

A client made me some brownies after I did them a favour for free, and they were delicious.

ALovelyShadeofMauve · 07/03/2025 16:53

She’s weird. You’ll eat worse than that before you die, as my mother would say.

I always thought "care packages" were something you had arranged for you when older and in need of help. You live and learn. 😂

So did I. 🤣 My mother has a care package. It is carers who come in three times a day to get her up and cook her food. 🤣🤣 I was wondering how that fitted into a hotel setting? 🤣🤣

OP, I think it is a nice gesture and I would eat it though I get why some people would be wary.

Are you providing a list of ingredients in case some people have allergies, which you may or may not be aware of?

LOLing at the people who think a reusable burlap bag with a few treats and 5 sets of good quality pjs (which shock horror can be worn more than once) is an ecological disaster.

But these people also don't eat perfectly good brownies because they haven't inspected the kitchen from whence they came so I think we can agree they are clinically insane. Don't worry OP - some people are just miserable bastards, don't let them drag you down.

The prevailing view on MN is that every single other human being in the world is irredeemably filthy and contaminated with every disease it's possible to contract. Even touching something they once touched might kill you.

gannett · 07/03/2025 16:54

It's only on MN that I've ever encountered people who refuse to eat home-cooked food. This place has a real issue with germphobia. DP is the baker in our household and whenever he takes baked goods to social events they get demolished within seconds.

I would demolish the lot, I would thank you profusely and rave about you to all my friends and I would angle after any invitations where I might get to eat more of your delicious baking.

To everyone who refuses to eat home-cooked food - could you make yourselves known at social events, please? Because I'll eat the brownies if you're not having them. I hate to think of them going to waste.

PrimitivePerson · 07/03/2025 16:56

The most recent homemade food I had was some samosas one of my colleagues made. Absolutely delicious, and I'm still here.

Whatabouterry · 07/03/2025 16:56

I’d love it! I’d think it was a really thoughtful and kind idea.

2Rebecca · 07/03/2025 16:56

Buying unsolicited clothes for other people is rarely a good idea and can be wasteful. The matchy matchy thing sounds naff. Buy them a nice piece of jewellery or a bottle of champagne each. it sounds an OTT wedding.

Fagli · 07/03/2025 16:57

Providing pyjamas 😂!!! I’m sure the people who are going to the wedding might like this as you obviously know them well, but I can’t imagine guessing people’s sizes and none of my family wears PJs so would be a complete waste - are they branded with the date and the couple’s names?!! It does sound very over the top and unsubtle, but each to their own. The packaging and treats look very reality tv/Essex wives etc., but I know how popular those programmes are so I’m sure everyone will enjoy it.

diddl · 07/03/2025 16:57

I wonder if the posters who wouldn't eat the brownies also wouldn't eat the wedding cake.

I would have thought that the meal would put you more at risk than baked goods.

Cringe all you like. Opinions are like arseholes. We all have them.

We are girls in our 20s who will be having a laugh with mates whilst drinking champagne, getting our make up done.

Cheers 🥂

My sister made little iced biscuits for her wedding this year, I ate them knowing her kitchen is clean but there were loads left behind at the end of the day. Thinking about it, at most weddings I have been to people leave favours behind. The only ones that don't get left are alcohol miniatures.

You will be so busy in the days leading up to the wedding, it's not worth the faff and the expense.

Don't forget airborne diseases. Anything that's been in the same space as another human being has been fouled forever.

I will never forget that thread about someone whose husband farted in the kitchen. One of the most batshit 20 pages I have ever laid my eyes on.

It’s not that unusual. I have done the matching pj thing twice for friends’ weddings. It’s nice to have something to wear when you are getting make up done/photos taken.

At work people’s birthdays were always celebrated with purchases from the local WI shop. We had no idea who made them and didn’t care.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 07/03/2025 17:00

Okay, but what's the brownie recipe?!

Ihopeyouhavent · 07/03/2025 17:00

I dont eat cakes or sweet stuff, but my DH and boys would smash them in!!

I'd eat anything savory to be fair.

BreezySwan · 07/03/2025 17:00

Wow, what do you do about school bake sales? The homemade stuff is the best

Various members of our family have made wedding cakes for other members of the family. None of us are professional bakers/cooks. What would posters who don’t eat home made cakes do in respect of these wedding cakes?

Oh yeah I've just remembered I made my friends wedding cake! Didn't occur to me people wouldn't want to eat it 😂
