Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I would eat them although TBH not after a full day at a wedding so would probably need packaging that meant I could take them home. I wouldn't care if you had made them or your family, I'm doubtful though I would get any as my 13yr old tends to eact anything that comes in to sight. If they were still there by breakfast I would be surprised!

Chocolate that is 50-60% cocoa solids. I have tried 70%, really good quality chocolate and it is just too bitter.

I cut up the kinder bueno into bite size chunks and fold that into the batter (do not overfold at that point, use a knife). And then for the hazelnut cream, I just pour half the batter in the tin and then spread a nice generous thick layer of spread on top. Followed by the rest of the batter. Glorious.

Thanks, I'll give it a try sometime.

I really wish there had been such goodies at the last wedding I went to.
Might have made the whole fiasco more palatable......

RedPanda901 · 07/03/2025 19:09

Love the home baked goodies. I promise you a home baked cake is WAY more hygienic than the dark kitchen you buy your Deliveroo from. I’ve worked in kitchens and seen what chefs do.

Cosyblankets · 07/03/2025 19:18

I only came on to see what a care package was!
I think it's a nice touch

The sister’s SIL must be a mumsnetter. It didn’t even occur to me that people felt like this about home cooking until I read it on here.

This. I would absolutely love to have found something delicious in my room!

It has never occurred me to worry about eating anything like that.

I have never had food poisoning so I guess I’m not going too far wrong.

Marchitectmummy · 07/03/2025 19:22

Sorry nope I wouldn't eat it either.

Didimum · 07/03/2025 19:23

This is Mumsnet, where most of the weirdo posters would pick the homemade brownie up with tongs, drop them out the window then fumigate the room.

Sounds lovely, OP, and I would devour that brownie!

I worked as a chef in my early 20s and saw some disgusting things. I don't especially enjoy dining out as a result, and neither does my friend who was a chef for 30 years. An open kitchen is more reassuring.

I wouldn't eat the brownie if I didn't know where it had come from. I prefer to bake my own cakes. I don't know if I've just been unlucky but I've had too many hair-in-food incidents, and even one incident where a loaf of freshly baked supermarket bread contained something so disgusting that they sent it off to be analysed in a lab and paid me a fair bit of compensation without me even having to ask for it.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/03/2025 19:29

I think these kind of threads bring out the fussy weirdos who won't eat home made cakes. But if you've ever brought cake into work you know those people are in a minority, most people love homemade cakes. DH had an office mate who rigged up a flag to his computer that would raise when he received an email with 'cake' in it. That's a (nerdy but) normal reaction to homemade cake.

Lentilweaver · 07/03/2025 19:29

I would happily eat it and prefer it.

Astonished at people who say they dont eat food from other people's houses? Eh what?
Have you never had Christmas
or Diwali or Eid sweets from a neighbour or a colleague? Or worked in an office where people brought tupperwares filled with goodies?

No, never. Never been offered it either, unless it's family or really close friends.

Oh dear, I now have an image of these MN users as the vomiting lady from Little Britain. 😬🤣

Lentilweaver · 07/03/2025 19:37

I am really out of step with MN these days.
Food is love. Sharing it is love. Unless you are allergic.
Just yesterday I had the most delicious scones baked by a colleague. So much better than anything in a cafe.

Porcuporpoise · 07/03/2025 19:37

Mumsnet is full of germphobes who won't eat anything unless it's made by Mr Kipling but my real life experience of fetes and bake sales suggests that most people are not like this.

Not when you're autistic and struggle with different flavours and textures it's not.

I eat food that I'm familiar with and that I know I can tolerate. I show my love for people in other ways instead.

This has me practically squirming with embarrassment.

I am “grossed out” by SO much in this entire scenario OP

Fullofpop · 07/03/2025 19:42

And you’re getting married yourself…. Planning on doing anything like this for your guests op? (Don’t)

I don't believe everybody on this thread who said no is autistic. They have cited hygiene reasons.

I never said they were, I was just offering a different perspective.

You're saying "food is love" but that's not the case for many people.

Zanatdy · 07/03/2025 19:46

I have no issues with eating anything, but seems many are so I wouldn’t bother

Oh you really do not want to open the can of worms that is home-cooked food AND someone ringing your doorbell AT THE SAME TIME.

"Grim." "Imposing themselves." "Abusive."

Lentilweaver · 07/03/2025 19:47

So glad my friends/ colleagues are not like MN and eat my samosas/ curries/ sweets without demanding to inspect my kitchen.
