Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

Most dogs and cats are housetrained.

I have 2 friends who have cats and dogs who are beautifully trained and they could cook me anything.

Others, not so much. As far as they know, I'm always full and watered. I actually try not to go to them though, as I don't want to offend.

Mygosh · 07/03/2025 18:28

Can't believe how precious some people are.

It's just a cake lol. Wrap in a paper bag or something similar. It'll either get eaten or left, certainly won't ruin anyone's day.

GroovyChick87 · 07/03/2025 18:30

If it looked good I would eat it and not give it a second thought.

NeedToChangeName · 07/03/2025 18:30

I'd eat homemade brownie

Everyone who is freaked out by the thought of eating food they haven't seen being prepared is in for a shock if they eat out in restaurants. 😬🤣

Or indeed at weddings!

Ophy83 · 07/03/2025 18:31

I would eat for sure! Some of the best weddings I've been to have had a table of homemade cakes with cakes provided by family and friends - judging by the enthusiasm with which everyone crowds in I think most people like a homemade cake!

It’s not about coming down with anything, I could eat some of every cake on the stall and undoubtedly be fine. It’s just the thought of where it’s been prepared.

My wonderful neighbour bakes like a demon for our village fundraisers, and I go and help her with boxing up the cakes and delivering them to the village hall. I’m sure they taste great, but she has glaucoma and her kitchen (or fingernails) are not the cleanest. Would they make me sick? No. Would I eat them? Also no.

But if it doesn’t make you unwell…I don’t get it. What’s the issue if it’s safe?

Cucy · 07/03/2025 18:39

Honestly I’d be miffed if they weren’t homemade!

There is nothing better than homemade food, especially cake type things and especially brownies!!!

I am craving a bloody brownie now.

I think it’s a lovely gesture OP.

Pickingmyselfup · 07/03/2025 16:37

Could be one of "those brownies" i.e. an edible. That's the first thing that popped into my head anyway when I saw the word suspicious.

If it is one of those brownies then I'm afraid I'll pass, twice is more than enough to last a life time!

I went to a wedding once where someone brought edibles 🤣 (brownies)

completely OTT OP, I wouldn’t eat anything made by a stranger left in my Hotel room. Also these days lots of people have allergies. Is it really necessary or do you have main character syndrome? Feels like you are desperate to do this…

CarrieOnComplaining · 07/03/2025 18:40

Oh god, this has me ranting to myself!

How the hell have we, in one generation, gone from whole weddings being catered from your Mum, Aunt's and neighbour's kitchens , to princess snowflakes eeek-ing out over a home made brownie?
And preferring factory made stuff with preservatives and god knows what in them?
And in a COL??

Presumably the OP's sister's nearest and dearest have some level of trust that she wouldn't offer them baked goods produced in the kitchen of Roald Dahl's Mr and Mrs Twit?

Pathetic.

It’s 2 things for me.

I don’t like cake.

I don’t like the thought that it’s possibly been prepared somewhere on the minging side.

We used always to throw out kids’ birthday cakes from party bags too. That was mostly because they’d be from boys’ parties and there’d be a preponderance of blue icing. Plus, our kids never liked cake.

Not everyone likes cake.

Not liking cake is a totally sensible reason for not eating cake, obviously. But you said it was the state of the kitchens.

Expletive · 07/03/2025 18:44

I’d eat them… and all the ones that the fussy buggers wouldn’t eat.

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 07/03/2025 18:44

All sounds lovely, lucky girls to have your sister and your sister is just as lucky to have such a thoughtful sister.
I'd eat them if they were packaged which I'm certain they will be. Maybe print an ingredient list to go in each one as well. Small enough to look nice but big enough to be able to read.

EdithBond · 07/03/2025 18:45

I don’t think it’s weird to provide home-made brownies. It’s a lovely idea.

Just accept some people may not eat them for various reasons.

TheKeatingFive · 07/03/2025 18:48

I'm always gobsmacked that people won't eat home made stuff but somehow think commercial kitchens are fine. Oh you sweet summer children. 😆

TheGander · 07/03/2025 18:48

If you are going to provide a care package to each guest it’s going to work out extremely expensive ( NHS humour).

TwistedWonder · 07/03/2025 18:49

DappledThings · 07/03/2025 15:42

I wouldn't think twice before eating it. Never known anyone get ill from cake or seen anything other than homemade cake brought into the office/church/someone's house anything other than devoured pretty quickly. Most people don't have these hang-ups.

This does seem to be an only on MN thing as I can’t say in my almost 60 years on this planet I’ve met anyone who refuses homemade cakes unless they’ve inspected the bakers kitchen.

I said it’s 2 reasons, only one of which is that I don’t like cake.

But the other reason doesn’t make a lot of sense - there might be a bit of grubbiness which wouldn’t hurt you. I accept that’s your reason, fine, but I genuinely can’t imagine thinking like that. But if you don’t like cake surely you wouldn’t eat it however spotless the prep? So it’s a bit irrelevant (or at least not the main reason) despite it being the only reason you initially gave.

Edited

The competitive hygiene chasing in her is really weird,

BunnyLake · 07/03/2025 18:55

I don’t like eating cakes made by people I don’t know well. I only ate bought cake at work birthdays etc. I tried a bit once by someone at work and it was disgusting (turned out to be a cake with unconventional ingredients, they were a bit of a hippy type) so it’s put me right off.

Maddy70 · 07/03/2025 18:57

I don't eat homemade things from unknown sources but they do know don't they so I think it's a lovely idea

I even eat cakes made by random kids at my school. Usually delicious. Never did me the slightest bit of harm.
