Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

It's clearly a divisive subject!

They sound like lovely brownies but I think it would be more in keeping with a bit of luxury if you purchased some individually wrapped brownies or cake slices - the sort of thing you'd find in a nice hotel or at the till in a waitrose cafe. Won't be too eyewateringly pricey for the quantities you're doing, and will ensure that those who won't eat home made, will eat them. You could always do the home made ones as a little extra for those you personally know and know would appreciate and eat them.

I wouldn't be grossed by anything nice done in good faith and manners even is is something I detest (fish) . The gesture is also important.

speakout · 07/03/2025 19:57

I wouldn't eat them- sorry.

I attended a Scouts fundraiser a few years ago, the usual tombola, book stall, tables full of home made goodies- sourdough bread, muffins, fruit loaves.
Two volunteers were manning the stall, and I hear one say to the other " I love how kneading bread leaves my fingernails so lovely and clean", holding up her hands in admiration.

The thought of that makes me heave.

Theseventhmagpie · 07/03/2025 19:58

Unless I knew you personally and knew your level of hygiene it would be going in the bin.

NattyTurtle59 · 07/03/2025 20:00

I would far rather have home baked goods than shop bought.

Honestly, the world is going mad, and it seems to me regressing. Or, more likely, the MN world, which as we all know is vastly removed from the actual world, In real life I don't know even one person who wouldn't eat home baked goods, in fact most people would prefer them. I worked in a place where people often brought baking in, and we all fell on it with delight.

I'm seriously thinking about leaving MN, so many really, really, strange people - I actually find it quite worrying that there are so many oddballs around (thank goodness I live in a part of the world where people are more normal).

GiddyRobin · 07/03/2025 20:01

Wouldn't bother me at all! Only issue would be allergens (I'm a coeliac), but otherwise I'd be chuffed. We have loads of bakesales in our village, and my neighbours and I often swap dishes, either savoury or sweet. It's communal and really lovely.

I briefly worked in a couple of cafes as a student...far more grim in those kitchens, I can tell you! You couldn't have paid me to eat anything from there.

How do you feel about chefs in restaurants? You often see restaurants shut down due to poor hygiene.

Lentilweaver · 07/03/2025 20:06

How do those with no allergens or other barriers feel about the delicious street food in Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam or anywhere else street food is great?

Fullofpop · 07/03/2025 20:11

@NattyTurtle59 I am seriously thinking about leaving mumsnet

I bet you don’t 😂

PrimitivePerson · 07/03/2025 20:14

The attitudes to hygiene on here are just bonkers. I'm not exactly ancient, but when I was a kid most people had one bath or shower a week, and somehow we all survived.

Crazybaby123 · 07/03/2025 20:16

I would eat it.
Although to save the fuss I wouldn't bother pressing the issue.

The miserable so-and-so's probably
wouldn't go near it. More fool them 😂

Thatcannotberight · 07/03/2025 20:17

I'm wondering how all the kids who did baking with their mums ( other parents are available) and ate raw cake mixture ever survived. 🤣

cakename23 · 07/03/2025 20:23

This is such an illuminating thread. I had no idea people felt so strongly about this. I am in a choir and every week, a different person sorts the tea break and provides (mostly) home baking. It's all delicious, and shop-bought fare is slightly frowned upon!

Do your brownies, OP. I'm sure most people will love them.

daliesque · 07/03/2025 20:31

It sounds like a lovely idea and as a usually miserable old bag, I'd be touched to have a gift box left for me with something homemade.

daliesque · 07/03/2025 20:32

Doitrightnow · 07/03/2025 16:17

I've never been given a brownie that I haven't eaten immediately.

Exactly. I don't like chocolates and don't like cake, but for some reason brownies are just bliss. Homemade ones particularly so.

I am in a choir too, and people bring home baked goods all the time. All yummy. Nearly everybody eats them.

Alaimo · 07/03/2025 20:36

I'd love this! We have a weekly cofee & cake morning in my office. Everyone is always excited when someone brings homebaked rather than shop-bought cake.

Bloom15 · 07/03/2025 20:37

I'd eat it but then I am a bigger for scouting hotel rooms for snacks

tellmesomethingtrue · 07/03/2025 20:54

What the hell is a care package?!?!?

JMSA · 07/03/2025 20:55

I'd love it!

Thepossibility · 07/03/2025 21:17

If the care package looked pristine and well done (shop standard)I would probably eat it. If it looked just thrown together then no. If someone takes excellent care with the presentation then I would assume they would take the time to be clean.

OuterSpaceCadet · 07/03/2025 21:41

Home-made is better than ultra processed shop cakes any day.

What strange logic. My kitchen hygiene is excellent and I am a good baker, but my cake decorating skills are basic. You'd assume from the lack of elaborate icing and packaging that my baking would be unsafe. Style over substance.

Mañanarama · 07/03/2025 22:26

Huh?

It wouldn’t occur to me not to eat cake.
