Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

And have you heard many tales of home made cake buyers coming down with dreadful cake based diseases? Or has everyone somehow been ok?

It’s not about coming down with anything, I could eat some of every cake on the stall and undoubtedly be fine. It’s just the thought of where it’s been prepared.

My wonderful neighbour bakes like a demon for our village fundraisers, and I go and help her with boxing up the cakes and delivering them to the village hall. I’m sure they taste great, but she has glaucoma and her kitchen (or fingernails) are not the cleanest. Would they make me sick? No. Would I eat them? Also no.

Dweetfidilove · 07/03/2025 18:09

If I know and trust your level of cleanliness, yes. If not, nope.

And yes, I've made my peace with restaurants. Less likely to have cats and dogs pissing about around my food.

ForestFox44 · 07/03/2025 18:09

I would stuff it in... I love brownie! I say go for it!

crumblingschools · 07/03/2025 18:09

For those who don’t eat home made cakes do you ever eat at a friend’s house?

That’s not the same! You know your friends.

Probably better to buy mini cakes in sealed packages and include in the care package. At least it won't be thrown away so no money wasted on ingredients etc.

I probably wouldn’t throw them away, because I like cake, but I’m actually more likely to chuck out a little processed one as the taste won’t be worth the calories.

Nope. We go out to eat instead.

But again for me, it's an autism/textures thing, not a hygiene thing.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 07/03/2025 18:14

Don't ask on Mumsnet. Most people love home made cake. Don't call it a care package though, she's getting married, not having mental health issues or suffering a bereavement. You mean a thoughtful surprise gift.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 07/03/2025 18:15

I never eat shop bought cake.

Because it's shit, and ultra processed.

MyDeftDuck · 07/03/2025 18:16

It wouldn't matter to me which side I was related to, I wouldn't not be eating anything that was home produced.

Letsgocamping67 · 07/03/2025 18:17

I think it all sounds lovely OP so crack on and ignore the naysayers. I have been round the back of many many food premises and have seen some right sights but I do get why it’s personal choice whether to eat homemade produce.

Most dogs and cats are housetrained.

I am American and this is a very common and fun thing that the brides and grooms or their families do to welcome their hotel guests. I have been to hotels where there are as many as 5 different couples tables set up with Welcome Bags for guests to pick up as they check in. Typically they have some treats from the area. The last family wedding we went to was in Philly and they had Philly soft pretzels, candy from a local chocolatier, apples from a local orchard, etc. water bottles, sometimes hangover meds for the morning after, and occasionally a map of the area and the agenda for the weekend. There is also a cute note from the couple. Its nice not mandatory. I would absolutely eat the brownies!

dutysuite · 07/03/2025 18:18

I’d never eat it especially if you owned cats.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/03/2025 18:19

Lovely idea, but pack cute little boxes with a few items from nice specialty shops. Save home-baking for home drop-offs at holidays.

So thoughtful, sounds really amazing

Floatlikeafeather2 · 07/03/2025 18:20

A care package was what was put in place by the nursing team, Social Services and the Occupational Therapist when my mother was released home from hospital.

PinkiOcelot · 07/03/2025 18:20

No. I wouldn’t give it a second thought. I like homemade treats.

The sister’s SIL must be a mumsnetter. It didn’t even occur to me that people felt like this about home cooking until I read it on here.

A mumsnutter you mean.

I would never turn down a homemade brownie!

Gastheif · 07/03/2025 18:21

Well I think it all sounds amazing. I would bloody love to be a guest at this type of wedding, I’d love all the personal touches and effort being put in to make it special. I’d be so excited and looking forward to it greatly. Hope it all goes splendidly OP

TheAlertCrow · 07/03/2025 18:22

I would love it, but my husband wouldn’t eat them, he’s funny like that about homemade food!

Thatcannotberight · 07/03/2025 18:24

Everyone who is freaked out by the thought of eating food they haven't seen being prepared is in for a shock if they eat out in restaurants. 😬🤣

LoAndBeholden · 07/03/2025 18:24

Gosh, this is crazy. I would definitely eat a family member’s baked goods. I assume a basic level of hygiene amongst my friends and family. I’m astonished to read this!

MellersSmellers · 07/03/2025 18:25

I would think it was a lovely touch, and would eat and enjoy it!
I would like it all the more if I knew it was homemade, it wouldn't occur to me that it might have been made in unhygienic surroundings!

Mumof2girls2121 · 07/03/2025 18:25

I only eat home made if I can as who knows where shop bought have been 😂
