‘Game the system’ disability benefits

1000 replies

Tomatochocolate · 05/03/2025 11:30

WTF
just read a bbc article about welfare reforms

Apparently ministers think that it’s an incentive to claim disability benefits as the incentive is no work commitments on UC. That claimants ‘game the system’

It’s a long process and really hard to get awarded dla or pip. It’s not just ticking a box that says ‘I’m too sick to work’.

AIBU to think this is just horrific

And I can not afford taxis, but I can walk to the bus stop, so get the bus.

XenoBitch · 05/03/2025 19:26

Kirbert2 · 05/03/2025 19:24

Using it for travelling to appointments is exactly what it should be used for. I use taxis for travelling to my sons appointments too.

Exactly. I was told that I should either stay at home, or get help for my "phobia". It is not due a phobia BTW.

What is ‘good faith’? Agreeing with you? I’ve been open and frank and answered questions about myself with no issue. Yet funnily enough I don’t get it back when it means backing up what is being said with actual numbers.

No, not agreeing necessarily, but it is not likely to just be accepted, without being picked apart, what @XenoBitch expenses are. Why should she open herself up to that? Who are you to ask anyway? No one owes you any explanations.

I can assure you I’m not a troll ! I’m really worried about what might actually happen with benefits and I found the bbc article really misleading and deliberately vague

Stay at home and miss all of your appointments? Of course. 😂

Because you’re all here insisting hardly anyone lives comfortably off benefits, so it’s entirely logical to ask how much they are to dispel the mystery and actually confront the facts. It’s absolutely her right not to respond. But she can’t be surprised at further speculation if she doesn’t. This is an anonymous internet forum, which she has voluntarily taken part in, so nobody is ambushing her. I’ve been asked plenty of questions about my life and have readily responded.

You can fund that answer by using Google instead of hounding people

And on other threads you did question how I spend my benefits, as in you don't think I should be getting "mental health taxis" as you put it. That I should "suck it up" and get the bus (despite me saying I am unable to), or just not go out.
And also seemed to be annoyed that all the therapy I had over the years has not somehow landed me a job... so it was all a waste of taxpayer's money.
I rarely remember posters on here as it is text only. But sometimes some posts and names stick out.

So forgive me for not divulging further info about my finances to you, as I suspect that it is not in good intentions.

UPSETPATIENT · 05/03/2025 19:40

I have not read all the response. I suspect there may be a significant number of people who may game the system. I suspect there may be two camp - the long term unemployed and the those with genuine conditions.

I was born with a condition that impacts my daily life. I developed another condition as older child and the developed another in my teens. I also went to develop other conditions as an adult. No amount of benefits etc can make up for difficulties and stress associated with these conditions.

I currently work but have had period where I have not been able to work and may not be able to work in the future. I am very grateful to receive PIP as alleviates my some of my worries if I not able to work and it means I can spend on my medical/care needs.

I would much prefer not have the conditions I have.

Er, no. I said mental health taxis were not a thing until very recently and a luxury, and I stand by that comment. It wasn’t aimed at you and I didn’t say anything about ‘sucking it up’. I also did not say anything about a waste of taxpayers money. That’s outrageous paraphrasing and I would like you to retract it.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 05/03/2025 19:42

And bear in mind that people with complex needs have higher living costs than others.

Every penny "given" out by the government so we don't have "naice" people / tax payers complaining about more people on the streets making the place untidy, goes back into the economy and is taxed multiple times.

RedHot2025 · 05/03/2025 19:47

Jabtastic · 05/03/2025 11:33

Largely for mental health or by exaggerating symptoms of eg arthritis. There are literally websites coaching people on what to say.

Edited

There are people who help parents get DLA for adhd, what to write, etc. Whilst many should get help there appears to be a growing number who have the dla forms written for them by people who know what to say to get max dla. I know this as factual having been told by 2 families who used these services. Neither child has many care needs, can feed, toilet shower themselves, out and about unsupervised but on the forms encouraged to say they need watching over 24/7 when they don't. So they are exaggerating their needs massively

They are not a luxury to me. They are a necessity.
And your comments made me feel shit. You don't get to dictate how I feel about them.

You need to be able to provide evidence from medical professionals that back up what is said on the forms.

A troll, in the internet sense, is someone who deliberately provokes, upsets, or antagonizes others online, often for their own amusement or to spark chaos. Trolls might post inflammatory comments, spread misinformation, or engage in arguments simply to elicit reactions rather than contribute constructively to a conversation.

That’s a shame as it could put paid to the rumours on here somewhat. As it is, speculation remains. I’ve given a breakdown of mine whenever asked, it’s an anonymous forum so it doesn’t really matter.

Someone single on UC with LCWRA and no housing costs would be getting around £809 a month UC assuming they are over 25. Not a lot to live on but many getting this would also have PIP.

hollerout · 05/03/2025 20:10

Kirbert2 · 05/03/2025 19:57

That is true if you get DLA or PIP on first application. Not if you appeal though. My mum got it on appeal for depression with the only evidence being she was prescribed anti depressants. Even my dad did not think she would get it. Some appeal panels are very sympathetic.
