To think the Republican Party need to wake up and find their spine?

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/03/2025 18:39

The Republican Party are responsible for President Trump. Given that they have a majority in both Houses and on the Supreme Court, they are the only ones who can prevent him further damaging the US and its citizens.

Their fear and appeasement of the bully Trump has only made him stronger, but we are where we are and can only go from here.

AIBU to think Republicans need to find their spine, guts and voice to stop appeasing/placating Trump and do their duty for the American people?

@tobee I know it's a bit inconvenient about me mentioning Putin in this and loans that were not loans ( well the vast majority) - the poster clearly is a bot or has skin in the game-

I mean just roll over everyone to Trumps bullying demands- and no we don't want more killed but nor do we want the world carved up commercially between Putin, Trump and China. A peace deal comes with satisfactory resolution on all sides - and I'm not seeing any Putin input here. Maybe he and Trump have already carved up the mineral deal between them

Do I really need to spell it out that someone from a different country can join a UK site using their VPN if the site is country restricted. You only need a very simple understanding ( and I mean basic, simple, a 10 year old's knowledge) to do so.

The site obviously isn't country restricted though. Are you well?

If Zelensky doesnt want to deal with Trump then don't. See where that leaves Ukraine. Ukraine just wants more and more and more money and just expects everyone else to keep supply, supply and supplying the money. Other countries don't have a bottomless pit of money to keep giving Ukraine although the Ukraines may want this.

Zelensky does not have to deal with Trump America if he really doesn't want to. It's his choice. He is the President of Ukraine and he makes the final choices and decisions. It will be HIS decision if any deal is made between Ukraine and America. He can always say NO. If he signs anything it's because he has agreed to it - HIS choice.

That doesn’t answer why you keep saying “you”. As if the people you’re addressing are at war.

Odin2018 · 05/03/2025 17:33

The Ukranians have put up a good fight these last 3 years but sadly they are not winning. They will likely lose more territory if they continue with the war, and more lives will be lost. No-one says they haven't been brave but....

I don't know, are they? Will that change anything I am saying? Not really. You, meaning Ukrainians and those who would like the war to continue on. Those yous? Is anyone really that bothered?

BIossomtoes · 05/03/2025 17:40

I think you’ll find most posters on this UK site aren’t Ukrainian. So maybe talk about them in the third person like the rest of us do?

Odin2018 · 05/03/2025 17:41

America has paused intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

Ah, @TooBigForMyBoots , you speak of spines and courage as if those were the currency of politics. But let me tell you a little secret power does not yield to principle. It bends to incentive.

The Republican Party did not lose its spine; it simply traded it for something far more valuable control. You call it fear and appeasement, but I call it pragmatism.

They do not oppose Trump because, for all his chaos, he delivers: votes, influence, and the undying loyalty of a base that would rather set fire to the house than let someone else redecorate.

You want them to stop him? Then give them a better deal. Because until the cost of standing with him exceeds the cost of standing against him, you’ll find that their spines are right where they’ve always been firmly in alignment with their best interests.

It's worse than that. To oppose Trump is to invite vengeance and vengeful nihilism against oneself, one's family and one's friends. Anthony Fauci, John Bolton, and Mike Pompeo all had their Federal protection detail withdrawn despite credible death threats from doing their jobs in Trump's previous administration, simply because they criticised him afterwards.

Any Republican Representative or Senator who considers opposing Trump will find that MAGA puts up an opponent in the next primary with unlimited funds (the Elon effect). This will end their career.

The way that Trump has circumvented all the checks and balances, and the separation of powers, then found a way to exert such control over individuals is really quite chilling. The man is not even a dictator - he's a totalitarian.

Do you think the majority people of America are still listening to that. They have seen through the screaming and shouting and demonising and it doesn't work anymore. You may hate to hear it but Trump won America in every single aspect by a large majority and up to today his popularity vote is increasing day by day by day and those include all race, creeds and colours in the US. So for all those that keep shouting, clearly it's not working even though evey tactic in the book has been used.

Where is the opposition leader? Gone MIA. Where's your strategy for winning the voters back because whatever you are doing is not working if Trump is getting more and more supporters. But keep shouting and screaming with an opposition leader MIA and no policies that people can relate to.

Trump really became popular and starting his winning streak when the opposition started legal proceedings against him. The opposition thought that would work - it didn't. The people of America have spoken. Change tactics Democrats and concentrate on getting your voters back with strong policies as Trump Derangement Syndrome will not win you votes, in fact it is losing them votes by the millions.

OneLemonDog · 05/03/2025 18:01

Where to start with that wall of shite...

I'll take "Where is the opposition leader. MIA" and point out that there is not such thing as a leader of the opposition in the US.

He didn’t. It was extremely close. I see you now seem to think we’re all American.

He doesn't really have much choice though does he @Odin2018 - and the US are well aware of that - he would have choice if Trump put the thumb screws on Putin , but he isn't doing- why do you think that is???

The numbers don’t change according to source. It was the tightest US election result in over 50 years.

The Republican Party, sold its soul many years ago with the arrival of Reaganomics. This in turn created the era of billionaires who through their media outlets and the use of lobbyists, have a deciding hand when it comes to picking the candidate and the policies. The Democrats have done very little to protect the institutions of the State, or to curb the power of the billionaire class. I dont believe that the powers that be within the Republican hierarchy, want to implement any real change, they have succeeded in persuading the voters that unbridled capitalism is the solutuion coupled with a very imperialist foreign policy. The post war settlement has died. The USA has been involved in multiple wars [overt and covert] for decades, its present leadership prefers to deal with a certain type of leader from Putin, Netanyahu, MBS and Modi. They represent societies who are hungry for a landgrab and military might. The nuturing of Democracy is enormously time consuming and bloody hard work, and requires as has been said many times 'eternal vigilence'. If the electorate prefer the snake oil salesman, why would Republicans want to demand something or someone else?

Odin2018 · 05/03/2025 18:14

Well, if I were Trump I would want my money back from Ukraine to help my people of my country. Trump didn't lend Russia any money so no need for a loan agreement with them.

All I am hearing is that people want Trump to say, Putin is bad. Trump may think it but he doesn't have to say it just to please other people. Trump wants Putin at the negotiating table and will not be goaded by Zelensky or others into starting an American v Russia war. Zelensky, and others would love that but Trump is not taking the bait. So people can keep trying and calling Trump out but he ain't gonna say it. I wouldn't either as that's not how you start negotiations. America is NOT going to war with Russia for no one except for its own citizens.

Zelensky and Putin need to come to the table because America is not going into WW111.

CulturalNomad · 05/03/2025 18:20

if Trump put the thumb screws on Putin , but he isn't doing

What kind of leverage do you think America has in its dealings with Putin? Financial sanctions haven't worked. I think it's safe to say that Putin doesn't want a military conflict with the USA, but likewise the USA doesn't want a military conflict with Russia.

This has been the gist of the problem since the beginning of the war. The West has little bargaining power against Putin. Threaten war? And if he take us up on that offer...what then?

So Zelensky should just surrender then.

He doesn't need trump to do it for him

Getting Putin to leave Ukraine would show what a great peacemaker trump is. Getting zelensky to surrender, not so much
