To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

Zekenskyy should have remained charmingly calm, agreeable and thankful and played them at their own game.

He wasn't the one shouting, he also thanked the American people

EarthSight · 01/03/2025 15:46

@DuncinToffee I think Trump and Vance behaved like bullies, but I think some of it might have been triggered by an earlier snippy & defensive comment he made in reply to a reporter who questioned his attire.

I understand why he was defensive - must have felt so intense to be there and feel ganged up on, but I think he should have smiled restrained himself rather than shooting a barb back. He did a good job of remaining clam with Trump and Vance though, and I think the shit could have hit the fan much worse if he hadn't.

No, Zelenskyy got very annoyed, spoke over the president, rolled his eyes, spoke in very defiant terms and insinuated the US would be next. I am a massive fan of his, but he was not advised well.

Stirabout · 01/03/2025 15:47

80% disagree with you OP. Perhaps they understand their history more.

TrainGame · 01/03/2025 15:47

I don’t think you understand the new world order.

Maybe read some news other than Twitter and Facebook once in a while?

Globalisation is over. USA is NOT coming to save us.

Europe will have to fund all its own wars from now on, including NATO, in the next few years, possibly today if Trump decides to pull the plug.

It’s every man for himself now. America is first.

Russia invaded in 2014 and stole Crimea. Then again in 2022.

Russia will keep coming. Look up Dugin, Putin’s imperialist war advisor. FFS actually read something useful.

We will need to look after ourselves from now on, spend our ‘tax money’ on re-arming and if we want democracy to continue that means a free Ukraine so yes we do need to consider their needs and their future because it impacts us.

Mischance · 01/03/2025 15:47

Those advocating doing nothing and keeping out of it and letting Ukraine go down the pan are missing quite a few points.

We have no option but to be involved. If we openly and publicly defy Trump the economic consequences for this country could be huge. And the intelligence consequences and the military consequences.

That is of course apart from the humanitarian consequences - thousands more Ukranians, young and old, slaughtered; other eastern European countries taken over and their citizens subjugated and slaughtered.

We live in a global economy now - whatever happens to another country has spin-offs for us whether we care about those countries or not. We are an island but cannot hide our heads in the sand - this might have protected us against wooden ships at one time - but that is no longer how the world works.

Pigwodgeon · 01/03/2025 15:50

Unfortunately Putin's Russia is not a problem that goes away by simply ignoring it. Uk is geographically in Europe, like it or not. Putin doesn't feel particularly warm towards the Uk atm, so thinking he will just leave us alone is wishful thinking.

Trump mentioned his attire when he greeted Zelenskyy on arrival.

The reporter is a trusted Trump supporter

Trump and Vance were handed the perfect opportunity to act like a pack of rapid dogs. Zelenskyy should have known this was a trap. He could have made it so much harder for them if he had been open, humble and respectful at all times. I don’t blame him at all, he was pushed to his limits. You can’t meet aggression with aggression in this scenario.

Compared to Trump and Vance he behaved like a saint

Right? Because what would have happened on WW2 for example without the non-European allies? We probably would have lost.

And your point is what?

He was too direct. in this instance the tone needed was sycophancy and boot licking. He completely misread the room. Understandable as it was an awful place to have to go cap in hand. But that’s what it was going to take.

I'm curious to know how many people watched the whole hour or so. when I got home it seemed like the webdites were all showing the 10 mins it went to shit.

Your post has lots of facts completely wrong OP. Noone says the UK is funding a war on Russia. You need to research this 100% more to have a workable opinion.

The whole point is that Russia declared war on Ukraine and they'll just keep going and targeting other countries invading them if Europe and the UK don't come together to fight back. A strong Russia is vey dangerous for the world including us.

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

Good idea, well it worked for Neville Chamberlain, didn't it?

Tigergirl80 · 01/03/2025 16:06

No I don’t agree. Anyone that agrees with Trump needs their head looking at just like him.

EasternStandard · 01/03/2025 16:07

@HPFA it's not just money, US military kit is needed.

Zelenskyy has said he needs their involvement to keep going.

Namenamchange · 01/03/2025 16:07

I wonder how WW2 would have panned out without the support of America. It’s an interesting question with lots of differing opinions

Do you think he should have signed a deal that didn't benefit Ukraine in anyway?

Trump and Vance were a disgrace.

You aren't going to get that unless Putin has a personality transplant and decides to give Ukraine their land back.

At present, Russia is offering nothing in the way of compromises.

So how will peace be achieved?

If you tell Ukraine they have to put up and shut up, the next thing that will happen is that China will invade Taiwan.

I am sorry if I upset you, but foreign countries, including Eastern European ones, are not our concern.

Borders are not the real issue here. It is the fall of democracy that we are fighting against.

Quite. He's quite openly mapping our underwater infrastructure.

You think the cost of living crisis is bad now? Wait until we lose some pipelines and interconnectors.

This is a hostile force that has shown itself willing to kill on our soil. This is not "a quarrel in a faraway country between people of whom we know nothing."

Putin has been remarkably consistent in telling us who he is and what he plans to do, and then following through on it. I can't fathom the "it's just words, he wouldn't really invade the Baltics/Poland/other parts of the old empire" brigade. It's so totally inconsistent with his actual behaviour.

For diplomatic negotiations, you need both sides to play ball. Russia is not about 'negotiations'. Russia is about domination. They are not interested in 'negotiating' - they invaded a sovereign state! Do you think we should have negotiated with the Nazis after bleeding Dunkirk? Sadly only one side is needed for a war to start and to continue. The only choices are capitulation, victory or resistance. Negotiation is not one of them because negotiation requires good faith.

DuncinToffee · 01/03/2025 16:13

It wouldn't have mattered if Zelenskyy had kissed Trump's ring, this meeting was a set up because Trump knew he couldn't deliver a peace deal Putin would approve.
