Why Are Mother Of The Bride Outfits So Expensive?

TheCatsBlanket · 28/02/2025 23:47

Just that really. Daughter’s getting married in June this year and I’ve been looking both online and trying some on in shops. None have impressed me enough to say yes, but dear god, the price of them is extortionate. I’ve tried to think that it’s my only daughter’s big day and I shouldn’t be so stingy, but I can’t get my head around the fact they’re priced in the region of £600 plus! And then of course I’d need to get some shoes and a hat too which will take the cost up even further.
Such a rip off

I was going by OP's preferred choice! Dresses like this make me look a truck driver wearing his granny's bedroom curtains 😂

Haha, I had a fenn wright and Manson outfit in 1984. Are they still around. If not, that dress is almost 40 years old

If you say what size you are, OP, people will be able to offer suggestions.
This is size 12, pure silk by Fenn Wright & Manson (RIP - lovely brand) and one hell of a bargain!

I actually thought that this brand had been bought out by TK Maxx because they are flooded with it?!

Maxorias · 01/03/2025 01:19

Is "mother of the bride" a thing ? First time I ever heard of it.

Just pick a dress you like...? Anything labeled "emotive" like stuff for weddings, bereavement, etc, will be sold at 3 times the price. Just like a wedding ring is sooo much cheaper when you just buy a gold ring.

Devianinc · 01/03/2025 01:19

There is nothing in on Long Island in New York. I’m a lurker at TJ max and marshalls

That’s is actually my dream wedding dress. I couldn’t find it anywhere. I got married in 1986 and every thing had puffy sleeves and horrible polyester acetate material. I wound up going to kleinfelds when they were just in Brooklyn ny and got a sample and simple dress but your dress was what Ii wanted. Simple and elegant at the same time

i did love it. It was our wedding present from her- another reason DH thinks I should keep it. It is beautifully made. Has a bit of a 60s feel about it, not as floor length as this.

Yes, it’s a thing. Mom has to match the wedding party. Somewhat.

I would not get rid of it at all

FleaDog · 01/03/2025 01:24

Try:

Needle and Thread
Hbbs
Wolf and badger, (eg Meem)
Whistles

Dont pigeon hole an outfit as mither of bride / grom.or you risk .looking fuddy duddy

Just find a dress you feel good in

God, I used to love them. They went into receivership a few years ago. I bought a couple of things from the winding-down sale ... and they're still in the box 😳 but I could probably wear them for a wedding, if the nieces would hurry up and set a date!

TheCatsBlanket · 01/03/2025 00:27

We have TKMaxx, same as TJ Maxx just a different letter. We don’t have Marshall’s no, I know of them as I use to live in USA, but none here as far as I know, nor the others you’ve mentioned although I’m not one for clothes shopping anyway, so perhaps I could google to see if they are in UK

Definitely google it. There’s been massive wedding wear for mothers of the bride or groom lately. Just make sure you get it larger than you are and I mean by about 4 sizes bigger. I don’t know why they make wedding wear so small. I’m thinking bc that’s how they make money. It’s in the alterations. It’s so expensive, almost the same price as the dress in my neck of the woods.

Devianinc · 01/03/2025 01:29

But if you can buy a dress you love from them at more than a quarter of the retail price I think it’s worth it. You can send back what doesn’t fit.

LoztWorld · 01/03/2025 01:41

I never knew until this post that mother of the bride-specific outfits were a thing.

Honestly this is such an obvious scam I can’t begin to imagine why anyone falls for it?!

Why can’t you just get a nice dress from m&s or phase 8 or monsoon? Almost any random dress from those places will be a million times nicer than the horrors posted on this thread. And waaaaay cheaper too.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/03/2025 01:44

Buy secondhand.

I absolutely love your dress and if I were your daughter I’d be raging if you got rid of it! Even if she never gets married or has different tastes, it’s an incredible heirloom. I think you would really regret it too. It’s gorgeous, unique and meaningful - please keep it!

I know the photos are not the actual dress btw - but if it’s similar then it’s incredibly lovely.

It’s really not. It has to do with the family pictures and it’s about the bride and groom. It’s their day and you have to comply. If you don’t agree I don’t really care but if you want to have good relationship with your daughter and and son in law you don’t make it hard for them bc your making a statement. Do it at another time if things are bothering you. God, this isn’t rocket science

I have a picture from when I was I think 24 in an outfit from them . Oh god, I was so young. The good old days.

ChanelBoucle · 01/03/2025 02:16

Just pick a nice dress or jumpsuit from a high end high street retailer and go with that. Along with some kind of complimentary jacket, bag and shoes. Bonus points if you think you could wear it again somewhere. I didn’t put any rules on my mum (her conventional MOB outfit was self-inflicted) and I’m damned if my dds will too when / if they get married. I didn’t know MOB outfits were even a thing these days!

Or a gorgeous silk tuxedo pant suit. If I could have only found one. Very very dark navy, almost black cause you can’t wear black at your children
s wedding.

Sorry you got scammed.

I highly doubt OP’s daughter is mandating that she spend £600 on a frumpy polyester nightmare from ebay.

If the daughter needs to sign off on the dress choice that’s fine. But she can sign off on a tasteful, affordable dress from a high street shop. I’d imagine so long as she’s happy with the colour and style she’s not going to insist on it being labelled mother of the bride at a 1000% markup

Huh? Scammed from what, I’m not understanding this reply..

Devianinc · 01/03/2025 02:37

No where was this statement made

madaboutpurple · 01/03/2025 02:47

On the Vinted website the seller can be contacted to confirm the size. It is well worth considering.

BlondiePortz · 01/03/2025 02:48

My mum juat wore a nice normal outfit no way she should (or I) have to have paid heaps for what may be a one off wear
