Why Are Mother Of The Bride Outfits So Expensive?

TheCatsBlanket · 28/02/2025 23:47

Just that really. Daughter’s getting married in June this year and I’ve been looking both online and trying some on in shops. None have impressed me enough to say yes, but dear god, the price of them is extortionate. I’ve tried to think that it’s my only daughter’s big day and I shouldn’t be so stingy, but I can’t get my head around the fact they’re priced in the region of £600 plus! And then of course I’d need to get some shoes and a hat too which will take the cost up even further.
Such a rip off

Try Pre loved wedding and occasion outfits uk on fb

Iloveeverycat · 01/03/2025 17:06

I probably would go to a big department store. Do people wear hats at weddings still.

cheseandme · 01/03/2025 17:09

My darling Mum was a great charity shop fan and she kitted herself out from a Charity shop . She looked absolutely bloody fabulous and took great delight at the very expensive wedding telling people which charity shop she got her dress and hat at . She bought a beautiful pair of shoes and bag from a ‘proper’ shop to finish off her outfit.

Navy’s are great, champagne, greens. Light colors but nothing tacky or neon. No barbie pink or turquoise. Subdued and elegant

Edited

Bloody hell. So many daft rules about what you can and can’t wear (as an older woman).
Wear what you like OP. Floral if you want. Neon if you want. Trousers if you want. Hat or no hat. Make yourself happy. If your DC is a decent person they’ll be happy you are happy.

If you say what size you are, OP, people will be able to offer suggestions.
This is size 12, pure silk by Fenn Wright & Manson (RIP - lovely brand) and one hell of a bargain!

In regular clothes I’m between a 12-14 but the MOB dresses I’ve tried on are all a 16 and fit comfortably

I see your in the US. Maceys has some nice options between 150-350 USD. Personally I'd wear this but I suit brown extremley well

Adrianna Papell Women's Floral-Design Embellished Gown

To answer your question wedding put a premium on anything but formal wear is typically more expensive to make with more fabric, lining, detail, fitting (changing the shape, not just enlarging for each size) and less of each one made and sold so no economy of scale.

That’s a great dress.

TheCatsBlanket · 01/03/2025 23:28

LoztWorld · 01/03/2025 02:32

Sorry you got scammed.

I highly doubt OP’s daughter is mandating that she spend £600 on a frumpy polyester nightmare from ebay.

If the daughter needs to sign off on the dress choice that’s fine. But she can sign off on a tasteful, affordable dress from a high street shop. I’d imagine so long as she’s happy with the colour and style she’s not going to insist on it being labelled mother of the bride at a 1000% markup

you’re correct, my daughter is not mandating anything, her theme colours are blues and greens which personally I tend to shy away from wearing as I don’t think I suit them. She is happy for me to wear whatever colour and style I feel good in 😊

@TheCatsBlanket Don't know how close you are to Preston but Age Concern have a special shop there for weddings and occasion wear. https://regenerage.org.uk/shops/occasions-preston/

I’m on the Wirral so Preston is a bit of a hike, but a journey I might have to consider if I get desperate!

I actually got a designer dress for £4 on Vinted and it is stunning. I am a bigger size than OP but I get comments on how that dress must have cost and it makes me smile as people would have no idea. I see OP is North West based. Well Altrincham charity shops are worthwhile. I was in one awhile ago and the lady who volunteered at one was telling me that in the summer a lot of the ladies bring their dresses in as the outfit has been seen at say the wedding they went to and they don't wear it more than once. A few years ago my DH got a suit for himself for £14 and the jacket was a current one that would have been £300 new.

Yes, visit charity shops in areas where footballers live. Wags, as well as the wives of managers keep them well stocked. Formby can be good if you're that way.

RobertaFirmino · 01/03/2025 23:36

Oh, I've just seen you're on the Wirral. Get the train to Formby one day and have a look. CS in Heswall might also come up trumps. There's a dress agency in Hoylake called 'The Way We Wear' and I imagine there may be similar in Heswall,

AffableApple · 01/03/2025 23:44

I got married a couple of years ago. My mother bought a dress. A nice dress she felt happy, dressy, smart, comfortable etc in. I don't understand what a Mother of the Bride outfit is. It sounds genuinely terrible, if I'm honest.

MyrtleLion · 01/03/2025 23:44

JJ's house.

It can be altered and there.is a huge range of styles and colours.

Anxioustealady · 01/03/2025 23:45

I would look on Hobbs.

I don't understand all the problems with looking like the mother of the bride, when you ARE the mother of the bride?

My friends mom wore a beautiful matching muted pink dress and fascinator, she looked beautiful, but she didn't pull focus from the bride. That's your role on the day.

Introducingme · 01/03/2025 23:52

Ok it was DDs second wedding and it was a very casual day.
My dress cost £59. And only chose it the day before. As we
were having a heat wave. My first choice would have been
so hot to wear.

Go with something you are comfortable in.

Kilroywashere · 02/03/2025 00:29

Has anyone suggested Karen Millen? They have some amazing dresses in their sale.

Yes, I’ve ordered a few of their ‘try at home dresses’ which will be what I’ll be doing tomorrow, trying them on

If you're looking in bridal shops you'll end up paying the bridal shop premium. Same goes for wedding or MOB sections of department stores.

Renting is the way to go, or second hand.

Babyenroute · 02/03/2025 02:31

There is a fantastic pre-loved wedding and occasion wear Facebook group worth exploring. Some of the outfits are stunning and you get to see real people in the pictures.

Devianinc · 02/03/2025 02:54

I like some of their things but they have to be altered

BejewelledCat · 02/03/2025 06:19

I bought my two MOB outfits from Jaques Vert and Phase Eight. Beautiful, well made dresses, flattering and appropriate. First wedding outfit cost £160 for a dress and matching wrap (JV), the second was £120 for a dress (PE).

MumofSpud · 02/03/2025 07:06

I used ever pretty website for my MoG dress
It did take a few goes before getting the right one but I got there!
Also Quiz online

Maverick66 · 02/03/2025 09:35

There are a few good second hand Facebook groups .
After all women pay £££££ for these outfits and wear them a few hours .
Re sell for half the original cost .
Search pre loved mother of bride and or groom .
Also check out Phase Eight or Monsoon .

TheMorels · 02/03/2025 09:40

I seem to get spammed with MoB sites on Instagram.

If I was going to be a mother of the bride, I really would not want to wear any of the outfits I see (unless I was channelling Carol Middleton). They’re always finished off with some sort of matching fascinator worn on the front of the head (presumably to hide embarrassment) - so naff. And the prices! Outrageous.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 02/03/2025 09:41
