How are you preparing for war?

I believe we will be personally and bodily at risk in the course of 2025

I live in a flat in the centre of a major city. I think there are pros and cons to this in a war situation. Inability to stockpile is a big one.

What are you doing (large or small)?

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/03/2025 01:18

I am doing nothing.Never even think about it.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/03/2025 01:23

I'm currently buying a flat in London. Feel like bailing and buying a bunker in the west of Ireland instead.
Don’t go to Ireland, We're planning on travelling to you for help.
The scaremongering here, is the Russians will invade Ireland for easier access to the UK, conquer Ireland in a week.

I'm buying a dinghy and a 4 life jackets.

Wouldn't take a week to conquer Ireland as they are without US support. My money would be on Ise of Man for safety as nobody would know it was even there.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/03/2025 01:40

@IzzieadoraDuncan Cheers, I will paddle towards the Isle of man.
You're right, a day, we're defenseless. 😱

Normallynumb · 01/03/2025 01:47

Living each day while it lasts

mjf981 · 01/03/2025 04:46

Move to an island. I'd be off to Lord Howe Island.
Paradise and a long way from most of the nutters up in the northern hemisphere.

JMSA · 01/03/2025 04:54

Nothing. If and when bad things happen, I'll worry about them. Not before.

Reallyyyyyy · 01/03/2025 05:16

Im not going to do anything. If it's my time, it's my time. You can't control these things.

Scaremongering at it's finest!

3 years ago this might have been an reasonable answer. Although it was totally understandable that a new war in Europe provoked real anxiety in some people back then.

I'm not an anxious person at all, I was somewhat surprised but how badly some coped with the pandemic.

At all.that said, I'm a realist and I was surprised it took as long as it did for a global pandemic, there were other viruses prior like MERS and SARS which were a clear indication of how vulnerable a globally connected world is.

However the US has realigned is loyalties with Russia. Who know the reason. Does Putin have something on Trump? Is Trump Krasnov? Putin is clearly a very charismatic man. Apparently Bernie Eccleston would take a bullet for him. Maybe together they intend to carve up Ukraine and Greenlands mineral wealth between them.

Who knows and it does not really matter. What matters is that the USA are not our allies. Ironically they really are now being run by a cabal. Realistically war is a lot closer Europe wide.

Perhaps its too soon to start stockpiling but I will certainly be researching where my draft aged child would be able to safely move to and topping up my overseas accounts.

If no war comes, no harm done.

You just need to be aware that your post is based on no knowledge or expertise and that it’s irresponsible to scare others.

dont worry about your son unless he happens to be a drone pilot

Russia doesn't want to invade the UK but, if it could, it would push further in central and Eastern Europe. If a NATO country was attacked we would respond as part of NATO. We have limited numbers of troops in the UK but we would be contributing to a wider force. If it got to the point of drafting civilians I'd assume the Russians were in France.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/03/2025 08:58

Mate - we've been at war a few times in my lifetime and while not great, there was no need for thebaverahe person to start digging Anderson Shelters or hoarding tins of spam.

Russia can't be that strong if they haven't managed to take over Ukraine in 3 years ..

I'm not worried.

MagePaige · 01/03/2025 09:18

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy it's not the imminent period we need to prepare for, it's the end of the decade when Russia has reconsolidated falling a bad peace in Ukraine, sanctions lifted. Handed to them on a platter.

Jasnah · 01/03/2025 09:35

There is little or nothing to do, bar getting to know a bit of science if you're lacking in that department.

You won't be able to hide young men or adolescent boys, unless you have the ability to send them abroad (which, if war broke out, you wouldn't be able to - they'd have to be out of the country already by that point). But I doubt foot soldiers are a big thing in an age of drones anyway.

Modern wars will be fought with technology. I have always said if I wanted to bring a country to its knees I'd attack the power grid first. Without access to electricity, we're nothing - we've become far too reliant on technology and cities especially would fall into chaos. That attack could be digital or with a few strategically targeted bombs. Anyone who can rub a few brain cells together would also already have placed a few strategic moles in power plants, major banking facilities and digital communication, possibly even fresh water supply. It would only take a few major outages and we're done.

As for stockpiling, no point. Anyone who stockpiles paints a huge target onto their backs; you won't be able to keep it from neighbours that you have a working generator or enough food to not lose a huge amount of weight if food becomes scarce.

If you understand a bit of science, though, you'll be able to survive for a while. Recognise edible wild plants, learn how to grow some edibles indoors, learn to hunt if you're reasonably close to the countryside, learn how to preserve food, learn to cook with fire or produce makeshift candles, learn how to distill water, learn to sew and mend stuff, learn how to make even primitive batteries. Those skills will get you far further.

Of course, all of that is pointless if a war turns nuclear, but if we've learned anything from the past (and humans rarely do) then any country even considering going down the route better research air currents, because the stuff rarely stays localised and there is no point ruling over Eurose if most of it is irradiated. New nuclear bombs are, after all, quite a few times stronger than what was dropped onto Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

After the American shit show tonight, hardly think it's scaremongering. Tosser Trump doing that for us!

Turn off the news. No one is going to war ffs.

Just thought of something why worry us women can handle this we dont need men to fight for us.
Mumsnet hate men time to prove to men we dont need them they should be shipped out with the kids when war starts leave it to us women.

Edited

Mumsnet is not a hive mind, I don't hate men.
However, seeing that there were Ukrainian women who stayed behind to fight the Russians, I don't see why British women couldn't. I'm in awe of their courage, especially in light of the rapes commited against Ukrainian women by the Russian soldiers.

I bet all the scornful people answering nothing were first to fight an old lady over the last toilet roll in the coop in March 2020

OneLemonDog · 01/03/2025 11:36

I don't think we're close to the point where ordinary people in Europe should be preparing for war.

Governments, though....

'What's the use of worrying, it never was worthwile. so pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile'

It was true then, it's true now.

2dogsandabudgie · 01/03/2025 12:03

Who would want to invade the UK? They wouldn't get very far, we've got too many pot holes, road works and diversions. The Russians would end up getting lost, go round in circles and then give up and go home.
