Easyjet flight attendant ( seat related).

Can I preceded this by saying that I have always paid for my seat when travelling with my dc up until a certain age and that I have also often changed seats to accommodate young families? However yesterday on an Easyjet flight, we were asked to swop our paid for seat to the seat behind, with no window so that the woman’s child could see out. No medical reason- just she wanted a view.
I said no, I was fine thanks. About five minutes later another attendant arrived, demanded our boarding passes, scrutinized them furiously. And then began to lambast me because I hadn’t swopped with the woman. She said they had been going to reward us with a free meal but now, because of our lack of humanity, would not. This was at the top of her voice. I said, reasonably, that I had paid for my seat and I would be sitting in it but by this stage she and her colleague were speaking loudly and gesticulating in Portuguese.
Is this acceptable? Surely the airline must accept responsibility for putting this family in this seat( right at the back of the plane. ) How did I become the bad guy in this? It’s still rankling today.

Really?

BashfulClam · 28/02/2025 10:34

Wow a free airline meal…they are awful. I’d complain as how was this your problem?

Bettycha · 28/02/2025 10:34

Absolutely not, my response would have been the same as yours.
Was it Princess Charlotte sitting behind you?
(Even then it would be a hard no)

HermioneWeasley · 28/02/2025 10:35

I would absolutely complain about that. They can’t monetise letting you choose your seat in advance and then loudly berate you for wanting the seat you’ve paid for

mummyh2016 · 28/02/2025 10:35

I would 100% complain. Yes it will state in the T+Cs you can be moved however you shouldn't be shouted at and embarrassed in front of everyone in the plane.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/02/2025 10:36

I’d be thoroughly pissed off, too. If people want or need specific seats, let them book in advance like everybody else. I can’t help wondering whether the passenger was a friend or relative of the staff, and had assumed that they’d ‘fix it’ for them.

I always want/book an aisle seat and unless there were really exceptional circs. I wouldn’t swap it for anybody.

Gemmawemma9 · 28/02/2025 10:37

I would definitely complain. No way would I have changed seats. The entitlement of some people.

CarefulN0w · 28/02/2025 10:44

Every time there is a thread on this theme I wonder why the flight operators allow people with under 12's to book unallocated seating.

I understand the financial modelling. Airlines lure people in with a headline price and need enough people to shell out for the additional cost of luggage and allocated seats to make it viable. I also appreciate that not everyone is bothered about sitting together for a short flight and if you are on a budget, it is a way to save money, but surely a child price could include allocated seating for them + one adult.

ExIssues · 28/02/2025 10:48

How much did you pay for the seat? It might have been worth negotiating. It's got to be worth at least double what you paid to be able to choose a seat at no notice.. Say you'll swap for £100 plus a free meal.

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 28/02/2025 10:51

You know they weren't really going to reward you with a free meal don't you? She would have offered the incentive before if she was going to. Instead, she just said that to be spiteful, on top of everything else she did.

I wouldn't eat an Easyjet meal if they paid me, never mind eat it for free.

YANBU.

OtherS · 28/02/2025 10:52

Of course you shouldn't have moved, that's ridiculous. The attendant was extremely rude and I would definitely complain. I also would have laughed out loud if they told me they were not going to reward me with a free meal if I didn't move - the threat of a free meal from EasyJet would convince me to stay put!

Hoppinggreen · 28/02/2025 10:53

Easyjet free meal?
I would swap seats to avoid one.
Its very unusual for Cabin Crew to get involved in nonsense like this IMO so you must have been very unlucky

orangewasp · 28/02/2025 10:57

A free airline meal isn't a reward - it doesn't actually even things up let alone compensate you.
The airline can't charge you extra and then embarrass and berate you for using what you had paid for.
Definitely complain.

poetryandwine · 28/02/2025 11:01

Please complain to management, OP. Preferably via social media and, if you get a good response here, with a link to this thread.

I agree that if they were genuine about offering you meals they would have done so originally, and I agree that an EasyJet meal is no incentive at all.

iluwn · 28/02/2025 11:03

I would complain about that. You paid to choose your seat. I would never swap if I'd paid to book. The only time I'd move is if I was offered a better seat. Other people have the option to pay to choose a seat too and if they don't want to pay then they will have to put up with not having the seat they want, such as having a seat with no window.
I recently flew back from holiday and as I went to board the automatic scanner rejected my boarding pass and said to speak to a staff member. She said they'd moved my seat to accommodate a family but that I had a better seat - front row, extra leg room, worth more than I'd paid for the seat I'd chosen. It was a good deal and I was happy about it. But no to swapping to a worse seat, absolutely not.

As long as you can prove it
Please don't cause an issue for someone doing their job if there is any doubt about what happened.
And even if it did happen as you say so what? Somebody upset you a bit, I am sure you will be ok

Doing their job? Booting someone out of a prepaid seat for no legitimate reason?

ellie09 · 28/02/2025 11:18

No, you are not being unreasonable.

Yes, they can ask you if you wouldnt mind moving, but if you decline, that should be the end of the story, realistically.

When do people learn that if you want a particular seats etc, then make sure you pay to secure it?

I have travelled with kids before and always make sure I pay a bit extra so we can all sit together.

TorroFerney · 28/02/2025 11:29

EasyJet don’t do meals.

EasyJet don’t do meals.

They do, they're just not complimentary.

KimberleyClark · 28/02/2025 11:36

I wouldn’t have changed. Bloody cheek even asking for this reason.

But she wasn't booted
They supposedly asked her to move, she didn't they muttered a bit and didn't give her some shit food.
No biggie

CerealPosterHere · 28/02/2025 11:36

Ha ha. I’d have told her I wouldn’t eat an easyJet meal if you paid me. 😆

pinkhousesarebest · 28/02/2025 11:38

Gosh I am really surprised by this, thank you. I think in my heart of hearts I felt bad for not moving ( literally the first time I have ever done it). This is exactly what happened. I also wondered if the flight attendant was a friend of the woman behind and if it was a stand by - it was the seat right at the back of the plane ( and yes my husband did pay for row 30. 😮. ) The offer of the free meal did make me laugh as I never, ever eat on the plane. She also missed us out when serving lunch - skipped our seat completely. Very, very unprofessional conduct.

I don’t think being shouted at by a flight attendant is “no biggie”.
