To despise the word 'comfy'?

Urggggggh. I don't know why, but I hate it.

I personally will abide a bit of discomfort for aesthetic reasons, but would never look askance at those who choose comfort over fashion.

I just have a, possibly unreasonable, hatred of the word.

I hate it too. Horrible cosy laziness. I also hate 'veggie'.

Hitherzither · 27/02/2025 17:27

And 'pamper'. Yuk, it is so infantilising. Makes women sound like they want to be babied and back in nappies.

ItGhoul · 27/02/2025 17:29

It doesn't annoy me, but at the same time I don't know why 'comfortable' gets its own abbreviation when other comparable adjectives don't. What's special about the concept of 'comfortable' that it needs a shortened version?

Oddly, 'veggie', as referenced above by @Lovageandgeraniums, really grates on me. I also hate it when people say 'roasties' and 'Yorkies' for roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Oh and when people describe themselves as a 'foodie'. And when tennis commentators call left-handed players 'lefties'.

I appreciate this is very much my problem and not theirs, though. I make no claims to rationality over this.

I love all things comfy! Huge soft sofas, king-size bed with memory foam mattress, soft dressing gown and loads of blankets.
Sorry but comfy is my happy place!

But the OP was talking about the word 'comfy', I think, rather than the actual concept of comfort?

TerrifiedandWorried · 27/02/2025 17:45

When I was at school my friend did her gcse art project around the word comfy. Only, she spelt it cumfy.

BallerinaRadio · 27/02/2025 17:46

Bizarre

I love to be comfy too much to abide a bit of discomfort for aesthetic reasons!

This! I'm all in on comfy!

stickygotstuck · 27/02/2025 17:49

I see your comfy and I raise you "tummy". Especially when uttered by health professionals 🙄

BobbyBiscuits · 27/02/2025 17:50

It seems odd that you will accept discomfort seeming purely because you hate the sound of the word 'comfy'.
Just say comfortable instead and make sure you always are. X

Papadonut · 27/02/2025 17:50

I despise 'lush'. Ugh.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/02/2025 17:55

I think I feel much the same about most abbreviations:

Trews
Blanky
Kids
Cardi
Ta
Dins
Hubby

Both can fuck off to the same pit of hell as 'hubby'.

citylightsbehind · 27/02/2025 18:18

Yes, @ItGhoul is right. It's the word, not the concept.

If I'm at home, on the sofa, I'm very happy to be comfortable. If I'm going out to dinner or a meeting, I might choose statement over comfort, but I don't judge anyone who feels differently.

But to be fair, I also hate it when someone describes something they've eaten or cooked and they finish with, Yum!

@ItGhoul I'm with you on most of these, but am oddly unbothered by leftie.

@TerrifiedandWorried 😂

@stickygotstuck God yes! That word shouldn't be used by or to anyone over 8.

Katisha · 27/02/2025 18:20

Also, "slippy" instead of "slippery".

TemporaryPosition · 27/02/2025 18:28

Yes, pamper, tummy, hubby, lush, all these can go in the bin. Comfy is fine though I think?

WhistPie · 27/02/2025 18:32

Toasty and hubby are my personal top two dislikes

AgnesX · 27/02/2025 18:36

Anyone who uses " comfy" when in the work environment is despicable eg " I'm comfy with that" It irritates me irrationally!

Oooh. I haven't come across that, but I agree. Could be grounds for instant dismissal?

I see it more in Style & Beauty...

It was a senior manager using it so no chance 😀

When I hear the world tummy I want to spontaneously combust into the worlds atmosphere.
I fucking hate that word and I cannot tell you why 🤣

LaineyCee · 27/02/2025 18:44

Ugh, yes it’s awful! Also hate “yummy,” “jammies” (for pyjamas) and adults (I know some) who talk about “pussy cats.”
