To despise the word 'comfy'?

Urggggggh. I don't know why, but I hate it.

I personally will abide a bit of discomfort for aesthetic reasons, but would never look askance at those who choose comfort over fashion.

I just have a, possibly unreasonable, hatred of the word.

”Comfy” I can cope with. “Tummy” gives me the rage as much as the phrase “gives me the rage”…

Oh yes! I has forgotten 'tummy'. Sometimes, I can hardly bring myself to say it and say 'stomach' instead, which is sometimes inaccurate depending on the context.

RosesAreNice · 27/02/2025 23:30

For some reason this bothers me more when it's used for emotions. So, I don't mind 'that sofa looks really comfy!' but I cannot stand 'I don't feel comfy with that". I really do not know why I feel like this!!!

Bitteralmond · 27/02/2025 23:34

A Facebook friend of mine was forever posting about having a 'girlie day.' Made my toes curl every time.

unlikelywitch · 27/02/2025 23:36

Treat, lush, yummy and pud make me feel bilious.

Scrumptious and sumptuous, however, are next level disgusting and should be banned.

I see all your words, and raise you “sweet treat”.

I don’t mind comfy but for some reason I hate ‘uncomfy’

Whatisthisbs · 27/02/2025 23:56

I see all your words and raise you with Holibobs, membrane and moist

Urgh

grinchalicious · 28/02/2025 00:04

stickygotstuck · 27/02/2025 17:49

I see your comfy and I raise you "tummy". Especially when uttered by health professionals 🙄

Yes! Hate this. It's a stomach ffs!

RosesAreNice · 28/02/2025 01:58

Amused that pp also shares my unfounded horror at hot choc. I do not know why this troubles me but it does. And don't get me started on PICKY BITS 😭

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 28/02/2025 03:21

Also against it, plus cozy, which seems to be in 99% of all adverts from about October.

LillyPJ · 28/02/2025 03:38

Poppyseed14 · 27/02/2025 23:01

Nobody has mentioned picky bits yet. I spotted a sandwich shop yesterday called Picky Bits and a little bit of me died inside.

'Picky bits' is just revolting. Makes me think of scabs etc.

I think I feel much the same about most abbreviations:

Trews
Blanky
Kids
Cardi
Ta
Dins
Hubby

Kids isn't an abbreviation!

IainTorontoNSW · 28/02/2025 05:26

Yorkie, roastie, veggie, etc ...

Sounds like they are working on getting Australian citizenship.

Be very wary when they call Mr Robinson "Robbo" or call Steven "Stevo" or name Mr Albanese "Albo" ... a likely sign that an application for an Australian immigration visa is imminent.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 28/02/2025 05:40

Comfy is one of my favourite words. It is just so comfy. I love tummy, poorly, lush and veggies also. And popping and pootling. And "ta" which always sets some Mumsnetters off.

Not keen on hubby, holibobs, jammies but it doesn't bother me if people say them.

I suggest people maybe do some yoga or something to work on ridiculous minor irritations and an insecure need to feel smug* and better than others and get angry about something important instead of perfectly acceptable and often quite wonderful everyday speech.

*smug - another fantastic word.

Ilovecleaning · 28/02/2025 05:43

Comfy
veggie
hubby
cardi
🤮

Poppyseed14 · 28/02/2025 07:40

When people refer to their boobs as "the girls". Just why!

Ummm... You sound a bit smug to me!

CountTo10 · 28/02/2025 08:10

In a similar vein 'spendy'. Thankfully have never heard it in real life but see it on here all the time. Makes me cringe along with 'sweet treat' as a previous poster said.

Hmmm. I also hate yoga, the practice, not the word. But not as much as the suggestion of yoga to others who have not specifically asked for an exercise recommendation. It reeks of smugness*.

*Which I agree, is a perfectly good word.

Weirdly, I'm more bothered by chocs (as in posh chocs) than choc.

OP posts:
Huckyfell · 28/02/2025 08:56

comfy makes me think of wearing joggers on the sofa in front of the fire with a nice JD & Pepsi max, Friday night... I love that word.

ClippyMuldoon · 28/02/2025 08:58

A grown woman talking about her yummy hot choc and comfy jammies and snuggly blankie is not at all acceptable. As for yoga? No. I self- medicate my rage and soothe my injured smug superiority with wine and LIGHTHEARTED threads.

Which reminds me, wine o'clock. Also awful.

Don’t forget “comfies” for loungewear and “smellies” for… ?? Scented products I guess?

Tummy and tum are horrid.

Brekkie is possibly worse.

Brolly instead of umbrella is utterly daft. Hate that one. 😂

Give me “comfies” over “loungewear” any day.

Loungewear is so naff, sorry. The word, not the concept. It’s that awful tendency to try to make things sound grander than they are by sticking “wear” after them.
