To despise the word 'comfy'?

Urggggggh. I don't know why, but I hate it.

I personally will abide a bit of discomfort for aesthetic reasons, but would never look askance at those who choose comfort over fashion.

I just have a, possibly unreasonable, hatred of the word.

I don't mind comfy.

I have serious problems with

Poorly
Chilly
Moist
Nice
Cuppa

Poorly is absolutely correct, if you look up the origin of the word. As is chilly.

PollyHutchen · 27/02/2025 22:21

Averse to 'making memories' and 'my little family'.

LillyPJ · 27/02/2025 22:25

I see your comfy and I raise you "tummy". Especially when uttered by health professionals 🙄

One doctor referred to my 'down below' area. That made me squirm.

Totally. I never know whether to scream or vomit.

So is 'moist'. It doesn't matter if the word's correct or not - it can still irritate.

Hemiola · 27/02/2025 22:42

I normally agree with hated words but sadly I am a user of more than one of your irritants. Sorry! I am in South Wales and it would be weird saying comfortable over comfy so think its more regional differences?

NewMarmiteJar · 27/02/2025 22:49

YANBU

Clafoutie · 27/02/2025 22:59

I’ve noticed it being used more and more lately where we used to use ‘comfortable’ and yes, that does annoy me, although perhaps unreasonably.

Also, it seems that people now ‘envision’ rather then ‘envisage’ ? 🙄

I think I feel much the same about most abbreviations:

Trews
Blanky
Kids
Cardi
Ta
Dins
Hubby

That should have come with a trigger warning!

Poppyseed14 · 27/02/2025 23:01

Nobody has mentioned picky bits yet. I spotted a sandwich shop yesterday called Picky Bits and a little bit of me died inside.

Cuppa! That drives me mad. I could never bring myself to say it or write it, and I feel queasy just reading it.

‘Brew’ used as a synonym for ‘cuppa’ is worse! Slightly.

And 'pamper'. Yuk, it is so infantilising. Makes women sound like they want to be babied and back in nappies.

The brand name came after the verb.

Oh yes! I saw a sign in M&S advertising ‘picky bits’ 😫

I hate it too. Horrible cosy laziness. I also hate 'veggie'.

To be fair cosy is on a par

I had once an eminent gynaecologist refer to my 'rude bits'. To be fair, he was about 105.

I'm in South Wales and have never said comfy in my life, comfortable all the way! Neither have I ever said lush, which is used frequently round here too.
All the culprit words on this thread make my stomach churn.
I once had to stop a friendship with someone because she kept inviting me for a cuppa( amongst other irritations) and I couldn't stand it.
Thinking about it most of these awful words are used by women not men, I wonder why. Is it because they're the type who like being thought of as "cute", which actually is another loathsome word.

Dazedandconfusedma · 27/02/2025 23:15

None Of the above bother me, but my sister moved to Oz and there are a bunch of Aussie ones that seriously grate. Kindy (kindergarten), Arvo (afternoon), choccy bicky (I’m sure you can work it out!)

BB49 · 27/02/2025 23:16

Nom nom and picky bits

GoodToBeHome · 27/02/2025 17:38

I love all things comfy! Huge soft sofas, king-size bed with memory foam mattress, soft dressing gown and loads of blankets.
Sorry but comfy is my happy place!

Agree…the word comfy is a comfy cloud of its own. Onomatopoeic almost !

steff13 · 27/02/2025 23:20

I hate it. But not quite as much as I hate "uncomfy."

PartoftheBand · 27/02/2025 23:26

I don't mind "comfy" if it's referring to something that is literally comfortable eg bed, clothes. But recently I've noticed it used in the context of feeling figuratively (un)comfortable eg "I don't feel comfy talking about this" or "You can bring a friend if it would make you more comfy" which just seems VERY weird.
