People who are too busy to do exercise

Hollyandivygoout · 27/02/2025 09:43

I run about 4 miles, 4 times a week. I’m in a routine and force myself to do it even when I can’t be arsed. It takes me about 30-40 minutes each time I go for a run and I squeeze it in early morning, before dinner, just whenever I can really. I work full time and have 2DC who are admittedly at secondary school now, but this is something I’ve always done.
My AIBU is finding it annoying when people tell me they don’t have time to do any exercise. It’s like they’re so busy and important and I’ve got all the time in the world. I honestly don’t believe that the vast majority of people can’t squeeze in half an hour a few times a week.

Their taxes pay for exercise related injuries, that's the joy of our health system.

I go to the gym at 10pm as it's the only time I can go there. I also walk when I can (I'm limited by when I have someone to look after my youngest) I'm lucky I can do that. My house is tiny and doing home workouts is almost impossible (flashbacks to COVID lockdown). When my kids were younger it was a lot more difficult.

Unfortunately I bet they don’t cover anything near it.

Now that's a term we don't see often these days!

I love exercise, but I will absolutely NOT do any sort of home workout.
Exercise for me involves getting out of the house for air and a change of scenery and seeing people ie way more than the physical side.

It has been challenging over the years and it's been very up and down but now my youngest is nearly 16 (lone parent) my time is coming again (which is bittersweet actually).

To be fair I was using it ironically 🤣

It’s very easy to do home workouts.

It’s not always though. If you’re in a flat with downstairs neighbours you have to be considerate of them so starting a workout at 9 or 10pm isn’t really possible. Same goes for early mornings. Even between terraced houses the sound proofing can be non existent. It’s less of a problem if yoga is your thing as you can do that fairly quietly but if someone is trying to fit in a cardio workout and they only have time at 5am or 9pm and they live in a flat it’s not “easy”.

Doesn’t always have to be high energy cardio. Lots of ideas online for all situations.

CuteKoalas · 28/02/2025 17:38

No I don't have time. For many reasons work, 4dcs , 7 after school clubs they go to between them. 3 different educational settings between them. So playing mums taxi until 6/7pm most nights.
Then there's 1 dc who has a lot of appointments. Housework, cooking and all that jazz.
Dh generally gets home 6-8pm.
But time we've sorted kids I'm absolutely knackered.
Weekends we have dsc. We enjoy that time as a family when we're not at various kids parties or sorting their social lives

Ladies chill, why are you arguing when the person who started the argument has either ran off🏃‍♂️ or is sitting back laughing with the 🍿

You can do exercise in the home … no planning required.
Now check your daily average screen time on your phone and tell me you don’t have time!

I actually live in a tiny home, so “exercise” at home has different challenges. You make a lot of assumptions. Sure, people are lazy- but not everyone is lazy. Some people don’t have suitable time- by which I mean non-allocated time at a moment when it’s practical to exercise. It’s disingenuous to say that everyone has the capacity to exercise.

NavyTurtle · 28/02/2025 19:08

You do you and let everyone else do them. It's none of your business. I am 65, work full time, out the house at the crack of dawn and back late. Stop judging. It's none of your business.

NavyTurtle · 28/02/2025 19:08

Notgivenuphope · 27/02/2025 09:44

Yet they have time so slob on the sofa and scroll on their phones.
Fully agree with you OP

None of your business.

Hope you don’t intend on being a drain on the NHS if you end up with weight related issues then!

My AIBU is finding it annoying when people like the OP don’t have time to do come back to a post they started. It’s like they’re so busy and important and other people have got all the time in the world to reply to them. I honestly don’t believe that the OP can’t squeeze in half a minute a day as a matter of politeness to respond to posts.

What about the evenings?

Most of the “reasons” on here are not reasons, they are excuses.

If people don’t want to exercise or can’t be bothered, just say that 🤷🏻‍♀️

DS is there in the evenings and DH is working. I finish work, have a cup of tea and chat with DS about school and how he's doing/let him vent any issues, make dinner, tidy round then it's the start of the bedtime routine, getting DS to take his melatonin, setting up his blankets and lights then encouraging him to go up then I have to stay with him until he's asleep. I'm rarely downstairs before 11, and often it's after 11 - which is an improvement as before the melatonin it would be 1am.

LoudSnoringDog · 28/02/2025 20:24

I started a thread on here a while back about finding time to exercise and one mnetter said something along the lines of "it's not time or motivation you lack, it's DISCIPLINE "

Absolutely nailed it. I have time, and I know that I need to exercise but I lack the self discipline

Sheeparemyfriends · 28/02/2025 20:26

I often work 10 hr days, on my feet mostly, come home, cook and have another 2 hours of work. I'm trying to get more exercise, but I'm tired - funnily enough

DS will have memories of you talking to him and spending time, not of your back disappearing out the door to go running.

It's all about balance. Rest is important too.

I have the motivation and do get plenty of exercise. Some days I have exercise planned though and tell myself that today, I am listening to my body and resting instead.

Willyoujust · 28/02/2025 20:36

Wow you do sound smug. I don’t have time on the morning….im already up a 6am and can’t face getting up any earlier. I do not have time after work either with taking my child to clubs / getting the dinner ready etc. Perhaps you’ve never worked a 50 hour week while having young children so don’t understand?

NewsdeskJC · 28/02/2025 20:51

How old are you?
I'm nearing 60 and many of my peers who spent their 30s and 40s pounding the pavements are forking out for knee replacements

BuildbyNumbere · 28/02/2025 13:59

She is giving an example of the exercise she does … not saying that everyone has to go running. There are many many alternatives.

No. She was being a judgemental, superior £@?€.

Their lives are busier than yours i guess?

I struggle to find the time to exercise regularly. Out the house 6am to 7pm most days - then after cooking, tidying up, showering and prepping for the next day im ready for bed 😂

You’re very patronising, and make a lot of assumptions. You also lack imagination and empathy.
Do run along now (do you see what I did there? 🤡)

No thanks … I don’t go running 🤡
I love the imagination on this thread that’s for sure!!
