People who are too busy to do exercise

Hollyandivygoout · 27/02/2025 09:43

I run about 4 miles, 4 times a week. I’m in a routine and force myself to do it even when I can’t be arsed. It takes me about 30-40 minutes each time I go for a run and I squeeze it in early morning, before dinner, just whenever I can really. I work full time and have 2DC who are admittedly at secondary school now, but this is something I’ve always done.
My AIBU is finding it annoying when people tell me they don’t have time to do any exercise. It’s like they’re so busy and important and I’ve got all the time in the world. I honestly don’t believe that the vast majority of people can’t squeeze in half an hour a few times a week.

Exercise in the home is somewhat limited by floor space. Also much easier in a house than a flat depending on sound proofing levels...

A Joe Wicks routine would be impossible above a grumpy neighbour/too close to a light sleeping child. Same for weights.

I have no excuse other than time to fit in more exercise. I already do a sport once a week for 2 hours one evening plus weekends we are not away and gym the other weekend day.

Weekday slots are tougher around kid ferrying and running is the hardest to add in. I'd do more if I could get them in the same place at the same time more often. Swimming lessons are offset by 15 minutes and other classes are sequential for their age group.

I do have space in the house but can see why someone living in a smaller house or flat or with younger kids who don't sleep well would find it impossible - in COVID times I couldn't exercise in the house during the day because there was one bit of floor large enough to do Burpees and it was the main route to the kitchen and that was a 3 bed house.

I try to do weights once a week, it's pretty much the quietest exercise I do, and requires a set of dumbells and the space needed for a lunge. (Although majority of exercises, dont require moving your feet) The cats are a bit freaked out by any activity if they see me working out but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't wake anyone up or disturb others in a different room

Not saying you have to do weights but I didn't think they would be massively disruptive

For me it's lack of childcare. Kids too young to be left. I'm working when they're in school

I guess @Hollyandivygoout is too busy and important to come back to her goady thread.

She's probably out running! 😂

I suspect you are both right.

Oh yes her only other thread is about erectile dysfunction.

I do find it curious how many people don’t make their health and fitness a priority as without it, especially as we age, is debilitating. This is why I’m such an active travel advocate. Build it into your life and you don’t even need to make time, you’re just swapping it.

You hear people say they “hate” exercise. Find something you don’t hate, you won’t stick to otherwise.

I struggle with setting out to do planned exercise beyond walking, so I've developed my own 'reluctant exerciser' routines around making every movement count.
I know I'm not going to be going to the gym, but I am going to be walking to work, so I add weight to my backpack. I'm not going to join a Zumba class so I put music on and put more movement into doing household chores.
It's not as good as a regular gym-goer, and it does help that I don't have a very sedentary job, but it does go to show we can all get more out of everyday movement if we struggle to find something we like doing enough to set aside 20 minutes a day for.

Love this! This is exactly the mindset more people need.

I work in a physical job, have arthritis in my back and hips and that combo cripples me. However I still walk the dog many miles and dig an allotment.
I can't run. Don't want to run. Can't afford classes and don't wish to either thanks.

I'm probably a lot older than you, but what years of excercise did for me..was help me develop back and hip problems (I'm a Taekwondo black belt). Your knees probably won't thank you in years to come. You can be active without being smug you know?!

However in my ;late 50s I have learned to play the piano, the drums, and am about to learn to snowboard (yes nuts). Is that lazy? Or just different priorities...

NewPapaGuinea · 28/02/2025 07:46

To add, you can do simple things such as take the stairs rather than the escalator. Use every opportunity to physically move rather than choose the conveniences of the modern world.

YourAquaSnail · 28/02/2025 07:57

I'm a teacher, which means I'm on my feet all day every day. I do some stretching/weights whenever I can, but if I went for a run every day, I'd literally collapse and wouldn't be able to do my job😁

No, it's brilliant and you are keeping mentally active as well.

I'm a TA for EYFS SEN kids. An hour's playground duty for me covers 'running', lol.

rubytubeytubes · 28/02/2025 08:18

Do you feel better getting that off your chest?
What do you want people to say ...
Yes anyone who doesn't find time for exercise is lazy?!?! Yes go on then you are right

What on earth was the point in posting this?
Can you really not understand why some people can't.
I work more than full time, I'm a carer for a friend, my family members and my children with additional needs. I love exercising and it's good for my mental health but I can only do it at home because of my children and sometimes people need to sleep as well Biscuit

neverbeenskiing · 28/02/2025 09:13

I'm loving the comments about taking your child to the gym so they can sit quietly in the corner and watch you work out. Just picturing the absolute havoc that would be wrought if I rocked up with my 2 SEND children...I'm sure the other gym-goers would be delighted! 😂

Some people really are clueless about the reality of other people's lives.

There’s all sorts on ideas in line … Pilates, wall Pilates, the list is endless … just have to look. Doesn’t always have to be high everything. Swats, lunges, sit ups, press ups, bicep curls etc etc ..: all very quiet.

nodramaplz · 28/02/2025 09:32

So it's not their priority!
Big deal!
You force yourself, maybe they value themselves and their peace!

coolmum123 · 28/02/2025 09:39

I haven’t read the full thread but the opening post makes me feel uncomfortable.
IMO it’s posts like that that put people off from incorporating exercise into their routine.
i find time to work out but my kids are a lot older, when they were young I wasn’t able to go out running / to the gym consistently as OH traveled for work and I was on my own with DC.
physical activity isn’t just going to the gym, or out running. It is so much more than that. Vigorous housework, squatting down to floor level cupboards, going up and down the stairs as fast as you can, stepping up on a stool to reach higher places, even literally when you get up off a chair instead of using both feet, try with with one foot (form of pistol squats) these are all physical activities. You just have to be mindful and do them a few times rather than just once. I did this and I lost quite a bit of my baby weight, without setting foot in the gym.
Posts about exercise should be helpful and motivating with suggestions of incorporating such moves within an individual’s existing routine should be discussed. Not judging people for not doing it.

There endeth the lesson 😂😂

RaspberryCombat · 28/02/2025 09:41

Yeah, what really gets my goat is when people are just … idk… not as good as me at life. You know? And some of them even have the cheek to be fat. What is up with that?

Cm19841 · 28/02/2025 10:08

Mind your own business and enjoy your run.

You are massively privileged.

It isn't about having time it is about prioritising time.

You have made the decision that exercise is more important than other things and so you find the time to do it, that means you do have to miss out / cut out other things.

Other people have chosen to prioritise other things and so have cut out on the exercise.

I bet there is someone else out there thinking wow, this person chooses to go for a run instead of spending an extra 30-40 minutes with their kids, I cant believe they would choose to do that.

Nah she's trying to work out if it's the running that's the cause of her erectile dysfunction.😎🌵
