9 year old bullied for 'moustache'

Sockmate123 · 27/02/2025 09:36

Posting here for traffic mainly.

My 9 (almost 10 year old) this morning blurted out before school that 'everyone' in her class is saying she has a 'moustache'.

She is a sensitive little soul that keeps things in so this may have happened once or ongoing for months. I am going to chat to her further after school. She is very pretty and quite talented in a couple of areas. I know every Mum says that! But she genuinely is. Has done a small bit of modelling etc
She is like Snow White. Pale skin, very dark hair, red lips. So dark hair on pale skin obviously is a little more noticeable than fair hair on tanned skin but its by no means a 'moustache' but up close in direct sunlight etc you probably would notice a few hairs either side of her mouth.

Has anyone any suggestions?
Would hair removal cream help? I have fair hair myself so haven't had this issue.

I am going to speak to the Teacher about talking to the class in a general sense about talking about others appearance etc

I suspect I know who the child leading this is and I think its from a place of jealousy....😡

YABU-shes too young for such products
YANBU -if its something that shes self conscious about better to try to something to help.

The kids are definitely jealous

But I'm a firm believer in fixing things like this, as its just unnecessary stress - i have a unibrow and if dd developed one, I'd just hair removal cream it off xx

That said, they may then find other things to use against her, so would recommend working on her confidence- maybe some acting clases or self defence classes? xx

Bleaching it would be better than hair removal cream.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 27/02/2025 09:51

I used to bleach mine at that age. Then kids would just say “Snowflake has a blonde moustache!” Made my life a misery. It wasn’t until my 40s when I could afford IPL to finally get rid of it that I felt comfortable having my face exposed in daylight. I’d always lean my head down, or cover my face with my hand when people talked to me.

I’d look at an epilator for now, its easy to use, no rash from cream or accidental cuts from a razor, it lasts longer than removing hair at skin level, and can be done before bed (to avoid a red top lip if she does it in the morning.). Waxing would have a similar effect but won’t get done daily so there’s a regrowth issue.

Then as soon as she’s old enough, book in 6 sessions of IPL and buy her a home one too for top ups. A few hundred quid but it will change her life.

ItsyourSam · 27/02/2025 09:52

I agree that bleaching would be better. But make it clear that it's just so she feels better, not because it should be done - there's nothing wrong with her and she's beautiful.

Futb · 27/02/2025 09:55

I think I’d use the hair removal cream op as it will be like silk and disintegrate quicker than the coarse thick stuff on legs. I know people are saying bleach but if you’re going to go to the bother if doing that then it may as well be removed.

Some kids are arseholes!

CarrotTopParsnipToe · 27/02/2025 09:55

That's one of those things that I'd offer her the options and sort it out ASAP. But bullies will just find another thing to point out. Try to help her with some practical advice for dealing with them, try role playing it with her. She needs to show the bully that they have no effect on her

Ablondiebutagoody · 27/02/2025 09:56

Hair removal cream + boxing classes

LavenderBlue19 · 27/02/2025 10:00

I would sort it for her. I was bullied for my very noticeable tache and dark leg hair at school and it was horrible. My mum wouldn't let me get rid until I was 14.

I would try a few things and see what she prefers. Hair removal cream might be too harsh on her skin, as might waxing, but they're probably easiest. Definitely IPL when she's old enough - I have a Philips Lumea and mine is almost gone now. Such a relief after decades of regular hair removal and insecurity.

Hair removal cream + boxing classes

lol good answer

BashfulClam · 27/02/2025 10:09

Be careful I got chemical burns on my face from hair removal cream. It was sensitive stuff designed for the face and i followed the instructions. Make sure you do a patch test. The best product I have found is the little jml flawless trimmer.

Westfacing · 27/02/2025 10:12

When DS2 was around nine I used hair removal cream to remove his noticeable moustache. All was well and didn't do any harm to his skin.

eyeeyeeyeeyeeye · 27/02/2025 10:13

Oh I got ridiculed for weeks on the school bus when the sunlight hit my face one time everyone and I mean everyone was chanting "MOUSTACHIO" fucking broke my heart that did. Now as an adult I wax or pluck.
Your poor dd kids are fucking horrible

BadgersGalore · 27/02/2025 10:14

I wouldn't use bleach or hair removal cream. Get some facial wax strips and whip it off that way - or take her to a salon if they will wax a child that age.

Kalteenbars · 27/02/2025 10:16

The hair above the lip takes a while for fall out that’s why I suggested bleach. Doesn’t have to be on for that long as-well as the hair is thin.

TheAmusedQuail · 27/02/2025 10:16

Waxing would last longer if she can stand it. OR IPL if it's possible for her age?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 27/02/2025 10:18

I would go to someone who can remove it using threading. It will stop growing after a while.

I had one when I was young but luckily my friend's mum showed me how to use threading to remove it myself.

thewreckofthehesperus · 27/02/2025 10:21

I use this as I've had laser on my upper lip but still have a few remaining hairs. No messing with chemicals or pain from waxing. Might get her through til shes a bit older and can decide herself what she wants to do? bought mine in tesco but ive seen them in boots too.

Oh poor girl. Kids can be mean. I wouldn't bleach as all that would do is give her a pale moustache. I would go for waxing. Longer lasting and the hair does get weaker.

isthesolution · 27/02/2025 10:22

Kids are mean but yes I'd use hair removal cream. It's a problem with an easy fix so I'd take it.

Nottsandcrosses · 27/02/2025 10:24

Get this!!

Absolutely perfect for a child, zero pain and no chance of a reaction or cutting herself, me and my sis used to use this when we were younger xx

Edit, sorry just seen someone posted this.

IDontDrinkTea · 27/02/2025 10:24

Get it waxed OP and either do it at home or somewhere it can be done privately. Definitely not in one of those places that has a chair in the shopping centre as if a classmate walks past her having it done, the teasing will only increase tenfold

Sunshineandbeaches · 27/02/2025 10:26

What you need is a flawless touch facial hair shaver - don’t panic, I know we were told never to shave our faces but trust me this is the thing to use. Bleach = blond moustache. Hair removal cream could be too harsh for young skin. Waxing = have to wait for it to regrow inbetween. I used hair removal cream for years myself. Got a flawless touch for my 9yo (at the time) after researching and of course tried it on myself first - now we both use it! Takes seconds to do, very gentle, don’t need to wait for regrowth.

Chuchoter · 27/02/2025 10:30

Flawless trimmer gently whizzed over it would be better than chemicals.

something2say · 27/02/2025 10:30

Use little scissors and trim it once a week. I have long thick hair and while that is nice on my head, it is not nice on my top lip.

Waxing gave me spots. Threading was ok but none down here where I now live. Easiest and most painless thing to do is trim it off imo - good luck

Katemax82 · 27/02/2025 10:32

Please stay away from hair removal cream, it works by dissolving keratin so can easily burn skin if left on too long. My daughter is exactly the same, she has a little face shaver thing that's completely harmless, it looks like a lipstick and they are about 20 quid or less... best thing ever
