He's being daft. Of course it's edible, it's always been edible. They'd have a scull & crossbones on the packaging otherwise. Everyone I know eats the rind but it is of course down to personal choice.

I eat it, I really like the contrast of the texture of the rind with the gooey inside but I was at a cheese tasting at a really fancy cheese shop in Toulouse a few years ago and the woman who did the tasting was adamant that it needs cutting off. Not because it's dangerous to eat but she claimed it tastes bitter. I still eat the rind though.
