To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

Why the light colours, sweaty crotches are not attractive

No-one's wearing them to look attractive. They're wearing them to work out in.

LaineyCee · 24/02/2025 21:52

Leggings are meant to be tight! If I were judging clothes in the gym, I’d find saggy leggings far worse. But when I’m in the gym, I’m focused on my own workout. I wear what I feel comfortable in and I’m happy for others to wear whatever they’re comfortable in. We’re there to train, not critique other women’s clothes.

What are they supposed to wear, an Aertex blouse and their PE skirt?

😂. “PE knickers”

I would love to know how you're meant to avoid noticing people like this. For those of you saying you shouldn't be looking at them, where is the person meant to look? And why does the person wearing inappropriate clothing have the right to look everywhere but the other people don't?

👍

But it’s NOT INAPPROPRIATE

Pickingmyselfup · 24/02/2025 21:58

Today in the gym I wore a matching leggings and sports bra set. Nobody gave me a second glance and I was comfortable lifting the weights. I had a hoodie which was on and off several times because of the air con and my positioning.

Sometimes I'm feeling slobby and I'll wear baggier stuff but it's definitely easier in tighter clothes and cooler in just the bra.

When I'm running in the summer I'm barely wearing anything because I get so hot. I have everything that needs to be covered covered so I'm not going to change what I wear just because someone doesn't like it. I don't wear short shorts in the gym because I don't like my legs and don't want people seeing them. When I'm running people only see a glance of me so I don't feel as self conscious.

If it's legal and the gym are ok with it then women and men can wear what they want.

When I’m working out I like to be able to see the muscle groups I am working on in the mirror. Eg. I’ll wear a vest on shoulder day, shorts for quads etc.
It’s motivation for those final reps where you feel like giving up!

Is that wear scrunch bums come in?

*where

@MasterBeth I don't know what gym you are a member of but loads of people in my one barely do anything & my friend is onto her 3rd boyfriend she met at the gym...

GoFaster83 · 24/02/2025 22:06

I love that women are more focused on strength and muscle rather than skinniness as they were when i was young. And I go to the gym with my male friend who wears short shorts and vest tops and has me leaning on his thighs to help him stretch. And so far as where do I look, I'm usually counting reps in my head or or imagining what I'm doing after I don't have to be in the gym anymore. I honestly couldn't tell you anything anyone wore today.

spoodlesee · 24/02/2025 22:07

It's anti-women to not be ok with seeing the shape of random fanny flaps in the wild. Shame on you.
If you're a woman, you're jealous. If you're a man, you're a misogynist.

I don't even mind the fanny flaps but wipe the equipment afterwards 😣

That's old news, skinny back. Look at all the already slim celebs on the jabs

Girlintheframe · 24/02/2025 22:08

I think it's great these women feel comfortable and confident enough to wear exactly what they want. It's all gym clothing so definitely appropriate.

In all honesty I barely notice what others are wearing at the gym. Usually I'm too busy focusing on what I'm doing. Of all the issues to care about in the world this just isn't on my radar but I do celebrate living in a time where women can express themselves in the clothing they want to wear.

I assume it could have the same impact if it’s a glute day…?! You’d need 360 mirrors though 😆

my point anyway that it’s way easier to see your form if you can actually see those muscle groups. Good form, better progress, less injury risk. I’m not going to see that through a baggy T-shirt or trackies.

This! Go on the girls 💪

spoodlesee · 24/02/2025 22:10

I also don't mind if a Tom Hardy or Henry Cavil lookalike wants to wear minimal clothing to work out but a real shortage of nice faces in my gym.

Hexagonsareneverround · 24/02/2025 22:13

Don't go to the gym then.

And don't worry about the pervy young men not knowing where to look.

Bodies are just that, most people have them and women's bodies are harmless.

I dont think the gym is for you if you are repulsed by women.

DevilledEgg · 24/02/2025 22:13

If you're noticing what other people in the gym are doing, then you aren't working out hard enough. Work harder, look around less. 😂😂😂

Stai · 24/02/2025 22:14

Redpeach · 24/02/2025 21:42

And scrunch bums?

Well yes, but not intentionally!!

brunettemic · 24/02/2025 22:22

Gosh, I hope there were no ankles on show, one simply can’t imagine the scandal in this day and age.

On another note, gym wear at the gym, whatever next.

On yet another note, you’d hate my shorts snd sports bra sets that I run in during the summer 😂

OMGitsaWHOPPER · 24/02/2025 22:23

My neighbour's 17 year old daughter comes to the gym with her friends, all of them decked out in skin tight colour coordinated hot pants and sports bras, long belly bars swinging. There's no way I would let my daughter wear that. You can literally see crevices. Anyone calling you unreasonable hasn't hit the gym lately.

I’d suggest working harder.

I’ve got no idea what anyone’s wearing at my gym.

Four times a week mate.

again: work harder and you won’t notice.

It’s also a well-known fact that building muscle mass forces the internalised misogyny out of one’s body.

Walkaround · 24/02/2025 22:35

So long as it’s practical for the purpose, I’m not bothered - ie breasts well supported for exercise, arse crack fully covered so it’s not abnormally unhygienic, clothing made of breathable material appropriate and hard wearing enough to cope with a sweaty gym workout, no pubic hair poking out, labia or penis not on show… I wouldn’t tolerate someone turning up naked for a workout in a public gym. Other than that, it’s people’s body odours I find occasionally offensive in the gym, not the appearance of their clothing - I don’t really like breathing in unwashed body/stale BO smells while exercising, tbh, but seldom pay much attention to what people are wearing, unless they look unusually good or unusually ugly, when it becomes harder to screen out the visual information!

Some think it's misogynistic to keep your teen daughter from wearing provocative outfits to the gym, while others argue it's empowering to just toss her to the wolves. You know, parenting in the modern age!
