To find the gym attire of some women completely inappropriate?

I went to the gym with a work colleague after work; it’s the first time I’ve been to that particular one.

I was taken aback by the number of women wearing either the tightest leggings imaginable, barely there sports bra’s and/or shorts which wouldn’t look out of place on the beach they were that sparse.

Is this really appropriate? I’m far from a prude but I like to exercise without being forced to stare at someone’s bottom squeezed into impossibly tight clothing.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

I wear tight, running leggings most of the time. They are incredibly comfortable. I only run a few times a week and never go to the gym. But the leggings get worn around the house, out shopping etc. I never considered them to be offensive and round here athleisure wear is really common.

mommatoone · 24/02/2025 22:43

Good god, have people not got anything better to do. Who gives a shit what people are wearing? Does it affect you? If so, you need to look for an alternative - ie ,line dancing with Brenda at the community hall - not a bit of flesh on show!

Fillybuster · 24/02/2025 22:50

I don’t understand why activity appropriate gym clothing is being described as anything other than functional?

I’m 51 and wear “tight” leggings (huh? Who the hell wears loose leggings? What are they anyway? Tracksuits bottoms? Harem pants?) and sports bra tops. Nothing else.

Yup, the whole world (within those 4 walls) has to cope with my entirely exposed stomach, shoulders and back. Not my problem, and, I don’t think, anyone else’s either. It’s not a sexual thing, it’s entirely functional.

I train 5-6 days a week, I work out really hard, including doing quite a bit of calistenics, I get very hot and the last thing I want or need is any form of clothing flapping around in my face (for example, when hanging upside down) or catching on equipment.

I do not walk around like this outside the gym, even in the middle of summer. It’s the correct attire for the environment and the activity.

How is this a problem, or inappropriate?

Some think it's misogynistic to keep your teen daughter from wearing provocative outfits to the gym, while others argue it's empowering to just toss her to the wolves. You know, parenting in the modern age!

I can't work out whether this is satire. But I my mind, my daughter can wear what she wants, when she wants. And ,what is deemed provocative? Because our girls are confident in their bodies, it could be deemed provocative?, what's this'tossing her to the wolves' bollocks.

MissTrip82 · 24/02/2025 22:30

Four times a week mate.

again: work harder and you won’t notice.

It’s also a well-known fact that building muscle mass forces the internalised misogyny out of one’s body.

Are you looking for a gym buddy? I need this kind of energy in my workout (and life in general tbf) 😆

ShinyClouds · 24/02/2025 22:54

It’s the gym, people are working hard and look good. I like it, it’s empowering for young women to aspire to be gym fit and ripped

TemporaryPosition · 24/02/2025 22:55

Stai · 24/02/2025 21:28

Well I’d advise you not to go to the gym in Angel, plenty of men in tight shorts, leggings, tight tops, crop tops and sometimes no tops!

I'll need to see pictures to believe this

This happens loads in the proper weights gym here

Male equivalent is surely the Middle Aged Sunday cyclist with his skin tight lycra straining around his meat and two veg Envy

Unpaidviewer · 24/02/2025 23:01

Year back i was overweight and decided to do the C25K. It was winter and I went out in baggy tracksuit bottoms. The seams caused some bad chaffing on the inside of my thighs and I nearly quit the whole thing.

Bestfootforward11 · 24/02/2025 23:10

Each to their own I’d say

LadyTable · 24/02/2025 20:07

Of course I absolutely would because I'm not a fuckwit 😳

If that's what he's comfortable exercising in, let him get on with it.

I don't have to look, do I? And even if I did happen to look, so what?

How has anyone been harmed?

I absolutely agree people can wear what they like, but that doesn’t mean I have to think they look good in it! Our gym has mirrors all over the place, so believe me it can be hard not to see people, so a virtuous “oh, just don’t look” is bollocks advice. I can be pedalling hard on the bike look up into the mirror and boom! There’s a sight I wish I hadn’t seen.
And yes, I’m sure people think the same when they see me. 😉

KenAdams · 24/02/2025 23:36

"Maybe I'm getting old" translates as "I'm deliberately being a twat".

I’m not going to spend my life looking at the floor just because others can’t figure out how to dress appropriately for the occasion/environment.

They are dressed appropriately for the gym. Bra and knickers is normal gym wear.
What do you think is inappropriate about women's skin and their wearing comfortable wear? Why do women need to be covered?
Your views are very strange.

Hexagonsareneverround · 25/02/2025 00:02

Op it's always been like this - pants and/or bra

It's mysoginistic to deny her agency and her choice over her body and her clothing. No need to "keep" females from anything here. She isn't thrown to the wolves - we don't expect our men to behave like animals, and in a free civilised society, they don't.

aquashiv · 25/02/2025 01:31

Weird I never look at what people wear. It's meant to be tight fitting

Lurkingandlearning · 25/02/2025 02:09

There was a similar post some time ago and it got me thinking. I haven't been to a gym for some time but when I did go I felt too self-conscious to look at anyone else, but I can imagine I'd be a bit shocked at people being dressed as you've described. But then I wondered why having it all on show in a gym is less acceptable than on a beach, especially a crowded beach where you are in close proximity to people wearing only a thong. Does being inside (the gym) make it very different to outside (the beach)? Or even a swimming pool where wet costumes delineate every part of a person's body, especially Speedos.

I'm just wondering what makes a gym different.

Lilplp · 25/02/2025 02:15

xsquared · 24/02/2025 19:50

I went to the gym myself today, and I can't even remember what others wore.

Why are you staring at other women when you are meant to be exercising yourself?

I should think because they were dressed in an eye popping manner. You don’t tend to notice people’s clothing if generally blends in/is as expected. But a lot of flesh flashing catches the eye - anyone’s eye - not in a pervy way,

AlpacaMittens · 25/02/2025 02:25

@Fillybuster harem pants 🤣😂

This, I don't really notice, apart from a couple of regulars who wear really wrong clothes - i.e. baggy and long cotton t-shirts, very quickly they're a sweaty mess, I don't understand why they wear those?!

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/02/2025 02:46

No one is asking you to stare. Focus on your own workout and leave them to it.

I believe some wear this sort of clothing to the gym so they can see their body shape as they exercise and spot their progress/which areas they still need to work on.

Not that anyone needs to explain. They can wear what they like!

It's a problem that is discussed regularly on social media. They're gross, but there is little you can do about it. People pretending not to get it are just bullshitting. Everyone knows what you mean, and yep most hate it.
