Single cucumbers from the supermarket come wrapped in plastic.. but single courgettes don’t?

if you ask me.. courgettes have a slightly more fragile skin that cucumber.. so why the lack of protection?

You are about to get your just desserts.

Which has reminded me that I have a recipe for an excellent chocolate courgette cake somewhere...

Are you in the US?

Hot off the press: different countries use different languages. This is a UK website so UK English is generally used.

SnuffleTruffleHound · 24/02/2025 13:07

i fund that if the cucumber is left in the wrapper it goes soggy much quicker.

YANBU. But I had to google 'courgettes'. Very strange word to use. Not sure why you can't say zucchini which is what it is.

They are courgettes in uk

Sorry, I meant to quote WillIEverBeOk's "Genuinely had to google that word too. Its like a completely different language is spoken on here!
And yes, its eggplant.", not Blubbles' reply
.
(Edit: quotation marks in wrong place)

What is a cucumber in the US ;-) ?

JoM8 · 24/02/2025 13:09

Eggplant, aubergine... Meh, both slimy little suckers.

I think when I take the cucumber from the plastic it discolours faster. Lasts ok still though just doesn't look as green and appetising.

And yes, its eggplant.

Regardless of the country, it is it’s not its.

CorragMacDonald · 24/02/2025 13:09

The first thing I do with a cucumber is take the plastic off and get rid. It gets stored in the fridge "open" even after I've cut it.

If the end is a bit dry/shrivelled when I next use it, I cut a slice off and either eat it or throw it away.

I think plastic packaging on fruit and veg should be banned and I refuse to buy it if I can avoid it but some things only come pre-packed now.

Never seen them referred to as zucchinis, other than when I have been in the US.

Have a Google. It really is "just deserts".

You had to goggle aubergine? really?

Yes. Truly. I had honestly never heard of the word ever before.

Sunshineandoranges · 24/02/2025 13:13

Does the plastic make them last longer in the fridge. I thought it was for supermarket shelf life. I find mine seem to rot in the plastic so have started taking the plastic off before putting them in the fridge. Am I wrong?

Bruisername · 24/02/2025 13:13

and what is more the wrapper makes them rot more quickly.

I agree and have never understood it

Blubbles · 24/02/2025 13:03

Are you in the US?

No, Australia. Those two words are not used at all in Australia, or in New Zealand.

pwish · 24/02/2025 13:13

Cucumbers are eaten raw and courgettes tend to be cooked?

Nannyfannybanny · 24/02/2025 13:14

You all better start referring to the cucumber,as a cucurbit then 🤣🤣. What about gherkins,eh, baby cucumbers.

RaininSummer · 24/02/2025 13:08

the person isn't in Italy either - it's either zuchinna (singular) or zuchinne (plural).

Please Americans / Australians... don't correct our Queen's English

MudpiesinEssex · 24/02/2025 13:17
