Single cucumbers from the supermarket come wrapped in plastic.. but single courgettes don’t?

if you ask me.. courgettes have a slightly more fragile skin that cucumber.. so why the lack of protection?

I admit I've not read the whole courgette/zucchini debate so apologies if this has already been raised, and without wanting to cause further derailment my question is
Why are all the half cucumbers that are sold left hand halves? Like why can't the cucumbers be chopped, shrouded in plastic and labelled? Who is turning them round?
Sorry more than one question

What? Do you mean half cucumbers are always the same half; either including the bit that attached it to the plant, or the bottom bit?
How is that left or right?
I have never noticed which end is sold as a 1/2 - I rarely buy the 1/2 ones.

This thread is hilarious. To sum up for those who can’t be bothered to read it all and keep getting it wrong:-

a) Cucumbers are wrapped in plastic to preserve them.

b) Courgettes are zucchini and aubergines are eggplants in America, Canada and Australia (and maybe elsewhere) but not in New Zealand.

c) @WillIEverBeOk whose outraged post has been quoted a million times is Australian, not American.

d) The correct spelling is “just deserts” and is derived from “deserve”. Nothing to do with puddings or the Sahara. I did not know that although I’m old and consider myself well-educated.

e) “It’s” is the short form of “it is”. “Its” is the possessive and is the exception to the rule.

f) I’m from the West Midlands. My mother was Mom, I’m Mom and my daughter is Mom. We are not American.

g) Bach is pronounced Bahk.

My ex husband is from west
midlands and a mother is MAM, I was unaware MOM was also used and never heard that before here in the U.K.
bery interesting.

This thread is so funny 😂😂
a simple question/observation by OP and it’s all out war about what a courgette is called in other countries 😂🤣

I think you'll find that poster was taking the piss.

1/2 cucumbers are just stacked like that by the packers or shop. Both halves are there all mixed in together. Of course. 😂

I think most English people CAN say Loch the Scottish way but don't because they'd sound like a wanker.
It's like English people saying pi-aya instead of pie-ella or choreeetho instead of chorizo.
You can say it but you'll soubd like a nob

I beg to differ. My husband is English (south west) and he can't say loch properly. If he tries he doesn't sound like a wanker, but it does sound like he's got a frog in his throat. He just sticks to "lock" should the need ever arise. I'm not a language expert, but I think the "ch" sound is just not present in everyday English, so English people don't learn how to say it. Interestingly, Germans typically have no trouble with "loch."

Mom is only (afaik) used in certain parts of the West Mids, and even there it's not universal (I'm in the Black Country and see 50/50 mom/mum). I think it's very accent-specific (just like mam is for people who pronounce it like that).

The English language is bostin'!

I don't know what that language is supposed to be, but it certainly isn't Italian.

It’s not the Queens’ English any more either. It’s the Kings’ !!

Would it blow your tiny mind to find out that a lot of Brits have no idea what egg plant and cilantro are because we call them aubergine and coriander?

I'd be quite surprised that Brits didn't know what zucchini and egg plant are. Cilantro might be less well known but not convinced that's not known either.

Edited

In the us we know it as both.

YANBU. But I had to google 'courgettes'. Very strange word to use. Not sure why you can't say zucchini which is what it is.

It's name depends on where you're from. In UK 🇬🇧 we have aubergines, 🍆 in other countries they're called egg plants. In Australia thongs are what we in the UK called flip flops. Different names for the same object Pavement in UK is a sidewalk in America.

Ha ha. I shop in Lidl which I don't think sells 1/2 cucumbers, so I might make a special trip to Tesco and Sainsbury's and turn all them all the 'wrong' way.
If the earth implodes you'll know why.

Allthegoodhorses · 28/02/2025 12:10

Redheadedstepchild · 24/02/2025 17:43

But have you ever put a cucumber behind a cat, just out of its line of vision to make them jump?

It sounds like quite a cruel thing to do but apparently they think it's a snake. Might be an urban myth or social media hoax but I have no access to either a cat or a cucumber at present to prove it and I don't know anyone who would be happy if I turned up at their house with a cucumber and asked if I could frighten their cat with it. Maybe a few years ago I did but I mix in better circles these days.

Hilarious! Made me laugh
