Single cucumbers from the supermarket come wrapped in plastic.. but single courgettes don’t?

if you ask me.. courgettes have a slightly more fragile skin that cucumber.. so why the lack of protection?

YANBU. But I had to google 'courgettes'. Very strange word to use. Not sure why you can't say zucchini which is what it is.

It's widely called a courgette in the UK and that's what supermarkets label it as?

Where are you?

Yes, that's definitely obeying Muphry's law.Grin

@decorativecushions - she's in Australia, probably by now with her head under a pillow moaning 'make it stop, make it stop'.

Because you need the plastic wrap to contain the black slush after it rolls the to the back of the fridge and gets forgotten about.

ChicaWowWow · 24/02/2025 18:37

BooomShakeTheRoom · 24/02/2025 18:22

Isn’t it because people cook courgette? So it doesn’t matter if it’s a bit grimy from boxes, hands and tills. Whereas we eat cucumber after a quick rinse so it’s safer to be wrapped?

Not always, you can eat them raw, sliced in ribbons or julienned. Delicious (specially the yellow ones!)

Do not keep in the fridge, even when already cut. It doesn't go slimey this way and keeps longer.

I've got another question... somewhere in the early 70s there was a year or two when a particular purplish colour was very trendy in the U.K., which was dubbed 'aubergine'.
So I'm wondering whether the same trend happened elsewhere and if so what this (frankly rather ugly) hue was called?

JayJayEl · 24/02/2025 18:40

Crunchymum · 24/02/2025 13:01

Courgette

(and it's "just deserts" not desserts - sorry!!)

Edited

What the?!
I just had to Google this. Consider my mind blown!

I know, but the vast majority of courgettes are eaten cooked.

You must be familiar with the, "Avocado" bathroom suite trend?

Have a Google. It really is "just deserts".

Maybe in Trip Advisor complaints about holidays towards the top end of Africa.

Rest of the time, it's somebody receiving their Just (as in fair, justice) Desserts (ending, final dish, a serving of consequences).

That's what Americans named it. Most other countries call them courgettes.🤣🤣🤣I also find it weird aubergines are called egg plant in the US. It's a vegetable.

Yep. 😂

I struggle with what I type. I can spell. I just can't see where I've made mistakes. I'm totally blind to them.

I do it a lot.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 24/02/2025 13:11

No it's not!!

Oh god. Please! 😱

It is spelled deserts. Provinces like desserts. There’s a whole bloody thread about it!

it’s a very good question op. Though I tend not to buy courgettes much as they are vile.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2025 18:49

Yes...the odd thing was, very few people in the uk ate either avocados or aubergines at that time.

venus7 · 24/02/2025 18:52

Because cucumbers are sold individually, so need a barcode, and courgettes are sold by weight, usually several at a time........they're sometimes prepacked in plastic bags.

Zucchini in Italy, courgette here.

EleanorReally · 24/02/2025 18:54

no the plastic covering isnt because it needs a bar code
plenty of fruit/vegetables are sold without being weighedd, red peppers for example

EleanorReally · 24/02/2025 18:55

cucumbers tend not to have plastic covers in greengrocers

Honestly. It's "just deserts" very commonly - but incorrectly - written as "just desserts" 😊

Have never wondered about this tbh, but very much like that you have, OP, and also that others have considered it sufficiently that they’re able to make a suggestion as to why!
On the continent, FWIW, I’ve normally seen cucumbers unwrapped — but having just come back from Spain, I noticed, sadly, that plastic wrapping seems to have been adopted there… It was somewhere very touristy though, so perhaps it’s done because that’s what they think tourists expect?

I think they last 3x longer in plastic so may depend on frequency of deliveries/turn around of produce.
