To think random man got his just deserts to his unsolicited comments today?

Weartherose · 22/02/2025 15:21

I'm wearing a sports top today to indicate support for a match later today.

Was at the supermarket today and this man, clocked my shirt rolled his eyes and riffed off the Name Three Songs comment and said "I bet you can't name 3 players". So I asked him if he was at the stadium (200 miles away) for momentous match a fortnight ago when X Y and Z scored?

He had the grace to look a bit abashed.

Why do some folk assume you are not fans when you wear band/location/ten shirts? Is it just to show off their superior knowledge?

So annoying as there is no way ever ever ever that he would say this to a man.

I don't think I could have given him the satisfaction of answering his question.

XWKD · 22/02/2025 16:41

The gatekeeping is a bit like the "I was skinny before Ozempic" people on here.

Mightymoog · 22/02/2025 16:33

makes me cringe very hard if i see a grown up wearing a football top.

Does that include players in the teams?

GiantRoadPuzzle · 22/02/2025 16:41

I support a lower league team and live quite far from home. I’ve genuinely only ever had positive interactions when wearing it.

I think it is mainly as they are so obscure, you’d have to be a fan to own a shirt & I genuinely love conversations about lower league football.

DS’ football coach supports a team in the same league, so we spend most of Sunday mornings chatting about it. There are quite a lot of my (former & current) colleagues or male acquaintances who now look out for their results because of our chats.

ItGhoul · 22/02/2025 16:44

When I was younger I got similar comments about band tees once or twice.

Literally never had a comment like that about football shirts though. In fact, in my experience men have always correctly assumed I’m a genuine fan, and I’ve had some excellent football chats with randoms as a result.

JudgeBread · 22/02/2025 15:40

This happened to me once when I was wearing a band tee and some tiny dicked clown decided to sneer and ask me if I even knew any of their songs.

I was actually shagging the drummer at the time. Told Mr Clownface if he'd not been such a cunt he could have come for a pint with the band. It's been 15 years and I still feel a little bit smug about it.

But the fact that you were shagging the drummer doesn’t actually mean that you knew any of the songs. I’ve been with DH for over quarter of a century; he’s a mathematician - I still can’t do a quadratic equation 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh and OP well done. Small man syndrome, looking for any opportunity to assert himself over someone else. May not even realise it’s what he’s doing. Very poor behaviour indeed.

Are you sure of this? Or was it basically misogynistic man syndrome, trying to feel clever by putting down a woman.

I mean sure. As it happens I did know all their songs, but my smugness came from denying the stupid little man the opportunity to meet a band he loved, not from proving him wrong which wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying.

But by all means carry on nitpicking pointless elements of what was supposed to be a light-hearted anecdote, I'm sure it brings you great fulfillment in your life.

It's not a terribly long thread but already the Curse of MN has struck and poster after poster is repeating the same point (which in this case happens to be wrong anyway) as if nobody else has already said it. Why do people do this?

Dicks gonna dick

This might help 😁 nb. It's a song!

Fucking hell

It’s always men and they only do this to women.

''In this warre Alexander was made Capitayne of one of the battailles, wherein his noble hert and courage did well apeare, specially when it came to the stroke of the fight, for there he acquited him self so valiauntly yt he semed not inferiour vnto his father, nor to any man els, but by moste iuste desert got the honour of the victory.''
— Quintus Curtius (trans. by John Brende), The history of Quintus Curcius, 1553

Granted, he got ‘desert’ right, but spelling’s obviously not his strong point…

(Only joking!)

What noise does a dinosaur make?

They hiss or roar, but it sounds remarkably like: 'fuck off you twat'.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/02/2025 17:04

RobinHeartella · 22/02/2025 15:25

Kudos for spelling just deserts correctly. Lots will come on the thread telling you you've got it wrong.

Mind you, I wouldn't have bothered to respond to the tiresome man

She didn't spell it right. She meant desserts.

DadDadDad · 22/02/2025 17:07

@CaptainMyCaptain - she did spell it right - it's nothing to do with "desserts". If you read earlier in their thread you might be enlightened.

HouseAshamed · 22/02/2025 17:09

@CaptainMyCaptain , just deserts means what was deserved. Just desserts means only puddings.

JollyHolly30 · 22/02/2025 17:09

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/02/2025 15:51

It's just desserts! Can't believe how many people have got it wrong (and yes auto correct does do it) 😂
Desert- eg Sahara
Dessert- eg trifle

If you don't believe me just use your friendly Internet search provider 😊

Oh you've embarrassed yourself here! 😂
Confident ignorance is pretty cringe-worthy

samarrange · 22/02/2025 17:09

StormInaDcup99 · 22/02/2025 16:02

It actually is 'just deserts'

I only found this out recently and always thought it was desserts!

I was taught "just deserts", but (a) logically it ought to be "just desserts" and (b) while Google finds 369,000 hits for the "correct" version ("deserts"), it has 1.94 million for the "wrong" one ("desserts").

A few years ago I checked "chaise longue" versus the appalling "chaise lounge" and "lounge" was actually winning, but I'm pleased to see that today "chaise longue" is winning by 16.8 million to 9.71 million.

HellonHeels · 22/02/2025 17:09

CustardySergeant · 22/02/2025 15:32

No it isn't. It is pronounced like desserts but spelled deserts - as in what is deserved not as in deserts such as the Sahara.

I am filled with happiness that a debate on "desserts" has been resolved by a poster with the username @CustardySergeant ❤️

HouseAshamed · 22/02/2025 17:11

@samarrange , your logic seems illogical.

WooleyMunky · 22/02/2025 17:13

Pleasepeas · 22/02/2025 15:22

Did everyone stop and cheer? Like a movie??

Don't you mean a film?

CustardySergeant · 22/02/2025 17:14

samarrange "I was taught "just deserts", but (a) logically it ought to be "just desserts"

No, because the meaning refers to what is deserved, and has nothing to do with any kind of dessert, so I don't understand why you say that logically it should be dessert.
