Work pay review disappointment

ivegotthisyeah · 21/02/2025 16:58

I am so mad I could cry!!
Had our work pay reviews this week.
I received and outstanding in my year end review ( very hard to get) and a promotion ( chose to stay at a lower level last year to gain more experience and more chance of decent pay rise this year) so I waited it out go over and above received fantastic feedback and I got the most appalling shitest increase of £900 a year. Wft !! I was gob smacked. Usual bullshit excuses goes on prior year you got double what everyone else got. It's private sector all on different pay so it's all irrelevant that I got double everyone else. My pay is low and I know it is but instead of complaining I've always tried to exceed my goals and work for a pay rise. It's seems they only had out decent pay rises when you leave or have another job waiting in the wings.
I am so mad and fucked off. Team leader said they are halting my promotion to go ahead with it in June as more chance of head office agreeing a pay rise out of pay review window.
I know my team leader is only the messenger but I actually want to laugh in her face at the fucking minimal shit £900 they think is ok.
I don't want to leave as it's flexible and benefits are good but I am so underpaid it's a joke.
I want to send her an email to say how dissatisfied and upset I am but not sure it will help. Do I want until June or voice my annoyance now - advice needed .
Been told this morning ( in confidence by a work friend) another colleague had gone in with another job offer and she got want she wanted but I am just not that kind of person to lie or make up a job offer pathetic aren't I

My best guess is that 3.92% is just above average, although obviously every company is different.

Do you understand how year-end compensation works? There is only 1 pot for everyone, including bonus if you have one and pay rise. Whatever they give you has to be taken away from everyone else, so if everyone has performed well in your team then the only fair way to manage the pot is to give an average pay rise to all. And if one person is more deserving than you this year, despite your glowing review, it will lower your own rate (the same way your high rise last year impacted the rest of your team).

Your manager is right to say that it will be easier to negotiate a higher rise outside of the year-end window, because then it's considered a one-off event that can be negotiated with HR.

Sorry I can imagine it won't come across as clear.
The 3.92% was on current level and year end review.
She then when on to tell me that they have decided in house ( so without head office knowing) that they are halting the promotion and doing it in June as will have more chance of a pay rise out side pay review window.
She also said something along the lines of if we have to make up another job then we will to get you more money.
It's just do I believe then and should I be getting something in writing now for June so it does actually happen.
I wanted 10% or above for a outstanding and promotion in my head

10% Christ, you'd be lucky to get that

What do you do OP? Agree your full time salary is low. An above inflation pay increase is justifiable if pay is low for the job you're doing. In private sector they'll pay what they think they can get away with ime.

I work for a large insurance broker multi national. Huge.
Ashamed to say I have been there 20 yrs - I honestly appreciate all your views and advice it's giving me the courage to look elsewhere. Kids are a bit older now and don't need me as much have a good support network to, but I am a single parent to 3 so perhaps that's why I've stayed security good pension flexibility.
I need to grow up and put my big girls pants on

That works out full time as about £1,125 which isn’t too bad at all.

If you think you should be paid more either negotiate or move companies to a higher paid role.

Companies will always try and get away with paying you as little as they think is possible, but that doesn’t mean you have to just accept it.

Chonk · 21/02/2025 18:14

OP you're confusing people (me included) by talking about both a performance award and a promotion. Are you saying that when you start the new, more senior role in June, your salary for that role will be only £900 per year higher than your current salary for your current role?

Epli · 21/02/2025 18:14

I got more than 4% only once in my 13 year career (and I got 'exceed expectations' rating 8 times). There also used to be no pay reviews if promotion happened the same year. What you got is pretty standard.

As mentioned by others - the greatest leverage in pay/promotion negotiation is an offer from other company, ideally a competitor. It might not seem fair but it's business, and business's goal is not to be fair, but to pay you as little as possible, but at the same time enough to keep you discouraged from changing jobs.

Wingingit11 · 21/02/2025 18:16

OP what’s your actual role though and what does the promotion involve?
some sensible advise above in terms of keeping above inflation pay award separate as a concept to pay increase arising from promotion anyway

No my new role is on holt until June apparently to give me more chance of a pay rise out of pay review window.
Like someone explained no pot to share out of pay review window
My £900 was for my year end review

Explain to your manager that you aren't best pleased with it & ask for confirmation of what salary the promotion comes with in June.

If the promotion has been agreed & it's not that you're applying for it in June, but definitely happening, then just ask what salary it is.

I'd phrase it using job title. So instead of saying 'what will I be paid come June?' I'd say 'what is the salary range for the ~Team Leader~ position?' making it clear that you expect that to be different to the current role you're in (used as example)

Doggymummar · 21/02/2025 18:19

That's actually a good percentage. I got nothing and my partner got 2.5, also on an outstanding end of year review.

It dealing with larger clients, more expectations , more problem solving solution finding - basically what I am doing now after working this year to achieve these goals within the higher band - hence why I am now ready for this role and title

Grand total of 3.92% 🤣🤣🤣

That’s more than my work have done this year.

It sounds like you feel undervalued in your role and that there are better options elsewhere. Have you considered moving company? Often the way to get continual increases is to move jobs every couple of years.

No I did this as wanted more ammunition for this year and more experience under my belt in that job role in case what has happened happens and I feel more confident to interview elsewhere

Edit: I've quoted the wrong post, sorry.

When you say 'I wanted 10% or above for a outstanding and promotion' you mean you wanted your current salary to increase by 10% to reflect the fact your performance was so good that it got you promoted? The financial benefit of being promoted comes at the point you receive your new, increased salary, not now.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 21/02/2025 18:21

I applied for the CEO job at work. Didn't get it, but got a 10k payrise out of it as they wanted to keep me doing my current job which they recognised I do very well, so that's one way to do it. 🙂

ivegotthisyeah · 21/02/2025 17:08

Grand total of 3.92% 🤣🤣🤣

I'm in a large corporate firm where we've had a big fat zero increase for the last two years. I don't think 4% is bad in the current climate to be fair!

DazzyRascale · 21/02/2025 18:23

Oh and I've also had a high performance rating for the last three years.

Hankunamatata · 21/02/2025 18:24

The only way Iv seen women up their role and salary is move jobs. Planning over each time to better roles and not being afraid to move sideways if role downs suit

ivegotthisyeah · 21/02/2025 18:26

@Chonk I was always inline for promotion.
Team leader was disappointed in my %increase which I realise now comes from a probably very small pot.
Hence why she has suggested to hold off on promotion until June to ask head office for a pay rise out of review window

Leave!

Posyrosytoasty · 21/02/2025 18:27

I Work for the council. We are getting 1 percent ! They have scrapped performance related pay for a new system which means apart from a 1 percent rise each year - we don’t get a pay rise for 3 years ! Then we will get 1.5k.
Im on 28k! So will get 280 pounds !!!! My council tax has gone up double that .

JustWalkingTheDogs · 21/02/2025 18:28

ExtraOnions · 21/02/2025 17:17

The only way I’ve ever got a decent pay rise is by getting a job elsewhere, and negotiating a good starting salary

This with bells on it.

What for a an outstanding year end review and promotion? Standard

What were you expecting? In my role an outstanding review and a promotion are two separate things so I don't get what you mean. What's the salary band for the new role??

ivegotthisyeah · 21/02/2025 18:32

There is no salary band we are all on different ! Private sector bullshit
