I am so mad I could cry!!
Had our work pay reviews this week.
I received and outstanding in my year end review ( very hard to get) and a promotion ( chose to stay at a lower level last year to gain more experience and more chance of decent pay rise this year) so I waited it out go over and above received fantastic feedback and I got the most appalling shitest increase of £900 a year. Wft !! I was gob smacked. Usual bullshit excuses goes on prior year you got double what everyone else got. It's private sector all on different pay so it's all irrelevant that I got double everyone else. My pay is low and I know it is but instead of complaining I've always tried to exceed my goals and work for a pay rise. It's seems they only had out decent pay rises when you leave or have another job waiting in the wings.
I am so mad and fucked off. Team leader said they are halting my promotion to go ahead with it in June as more chance of head office agreeing a pay rise out of pay review window.
I know my team leader is only the messenger but I actually want to laugh in her face at the fucking minimal shit £900 they think is ok.
I don't want to leave as it's flexible and benefits are good but I am so underpaid it's a joke.
I want to send her an email to say how dissatisfied and upset I am but not sure it will help. Do I want until June or voice my annoyance now - advice needed .
Been told this morning ( in confidence by a work friend) another colleague had gone in with another job offer and she got want she wanted but I am just not that kind of person to lie or make up a job offer pathetic aren't I

The 3.92% was on current level and year end review.
She then when on to tell me that they have decided in house ( so without head office knowing) that they are halting the promotion and doing it in June as will have more chance of a pay rise out side pay review window.

What you wanted and expected are clearly hugely gapped by reality. Most companies never offer a 10% pay rise. Ever. Bonuses yes, pay rises absolutely not.

Pay rises almost always follow inflation rates and are calculated as such. Last year was 3% so you got above inflation pay rise.

A company won’t pay a huge rise based on performance - that is what your bonus is for. Pay rise =inflation. Performance = bonus.

Im a little surprised you don’t know all this OP and don’t understand how most companies work?

You turned down a promotion that would have paid you more and now they are delaying it by four money and you are angry that they haven’t mitigated the gap in pay to your promotional pay rise.

Your anger is misplaced and unwarranted.

I feel for you OP but you're right, your manager is only the messenger. She's probably been screwed over herself. I've got the shitty task of handing out 1.8% increases to my team next week after a pretty tough year. It will not go well.... Then the higher ups wonder why the tub of quality street they bestow upon them at Christmas isnt met with more gratitude and enthusiasm.

Bonuses are related to performance, pay rises are different. A 10% pay rise is just unrealistic. Get your ducks in a row and then have a measured conversation or just leave.

A 10% pay rise on my wage is £2k, I don't see how this is unrealistic for a promotion, more responsibility and larger clients which equals more income for the company

I've read only today that employers are laying people off at the fastest rate since the big crash of 2008-9. AI is being rolled out all over the place. NI's gone up, making each employee cost more to employ. You're in the private sector and businesses have to make a profit to keep going. They know you'll probably find it difficult to get new work so the fact that you're getting a 3.92% rise seems about right. Life is unfair — but you should know this by now.

I'm sorry OP, that's really shitty and I can imagine how awful and furious that made you feel. Unfortunately, that has always been the way in the private sector. I know someone who is outstanding at their job, more highly qualified and experienced than their manager, always goes above and beyond, works really hard for promtion and payrise and, despite getting the highest review mark last year, was downgraded when the company decided it didn't actually want to share the millions of pounds profit they make every year with its employees. So my friend has to wait another year for the potential of a pay rise, despite consistently being the highest performing team member, who also helps everyone else.

Private companies very rarely give pay rises (large or otherwise) to existing staff. They've already got you and they know you need them more than they need you. (I'm sorry, I don't mean that to any way sound disparaging of you or the level of effort you put into work; that's just the way corporations think.) The way to get the sort of pay rise you're hoping for is to job hop. The alternative is to do what your colleague did and obtain another job offer at a higher salary and use that as leverage.

See, I wouldn't stay with an employer who only gave me a pay increase when I was one foot out the door. That makes them untrustworthy. They'll give you a pay increase but then penalise you in other ways.

you aren't valued, they don't care if you stay or go. The holding out for a June pay increase, what a load of tosh. They don't deserve your loyalty or time out of your career. Find a new job and have the immense satisfaction of leaving them to it.

there you have it. Your overall package is making the job worth it for you and you don’t want to leave. If you can’t find better elsewhere including the benefits or flexibility etc etc then it means you’re being compensated market rate for your work.

If you want more money you need to leave. Lay roses come by jumping ship regularly.

I went back to work 3 years ago on 43k, got a raise to 45k left to go to £52k and got a promotion to £60k. Next move is to about £70k and I will aim to start applying for those roles externally next year. Internally they’ll fob me off for the next 3 years regardless of how I perform

No these roles were evaluated last year and more streamlined so we were all given new titles with no money involved. Hence why I choose a lower one as knew I was nearly there with higher role

In that case there's no point at all in "wanting an email from my head of office saying this is what will happen in June and an amount then I would be willing to wait" because they're very unlikely to do that and commit themselves

They're probably just hoping you'll come to terms with this and carry on with them, so as PPs have said the only answer is to secure an offer elsewhere and negotiate hard

In an annual pay review 3.92% isn't bad.

I've never had a annual increment of more than 5%. That's the max my employers does when doing annual increments.

I get my increases by promotion or either requesting an out of course pay review.

I think you need to be clear with them now about your expectations re increase when promoted (I typically ask for about 25% more than I really want) and be prepared to move it you aren't happy.

If you aren't prepared to move, then you have little room to maneuver here.

All you can do really is vote with your feet. Look at the bigger picture in terms of benefits and career progression before you do anything though. Is anywhere else going to offer any better. Can you wait for a little while?

I had the just before Xmas and I was so fucked off. Made worse by the fact my boss offered to take me to lunch to compensate, I mean what the fuck?

Anyway, I looked for a new job and have just handed in my notice, I suggest you do the same. They offered to match it but tbh the motivation to work for them was gone if they were prepared to go back on a promised payrise of 15% and give me 7%!!

I think you should look for another role.

I wouldn't make up another offer tho - I knew someone who went in with another job offer, asked for more pay, they said no and he decided to stay.

The company called him in and sacked him that day. They didn't want someone not committed to the job.

He'd already turned down the other offer at that point and was left jobless for over a year. It's always made me think - if you want to use an offer to get a rise, you've got to be prepared to actually leave if they say no.

I think the pay rise and the promotion should be considered completely separately.

In my experience, Pay rises are usually inline with inflation or on a scale etc. Promotions are usually offered with a new salary as it’s a different role. Bonuses are rewards for exceptional work.

I’ve never worked anywhere where the 3 are all jumbled together in a nonsensical way.

last year I got my annual pay rise which was £900. A few months later I got promoted and my new salary was 7k more than my old one. At Xmas I got a £2k bonus. All very clear what was the reason for each.

What do you do OP? Agree your full time salary is low. An above inflation pay increase is justifiable if pay is low for the job you're doing. In private sector they'll pay what they think they can get away with ime.
