Having watched old Eastenders, do you remember Sharon was said to be fat. Looking back now she’s completely healthy or am I misremembering this. Also who remembers Special K can you punch more than an inch advert.

I remember the special k diet being suggested to me by adults when I was 10/11

Funnily enough I'm trying to get back to that size now - the size i was considered 'too fat' as.

People are awful and the press 40 years ago were rabid.

LaceWingMother · 20/02/2025 23:26

She was fat as a teenager. Not vast, but definitely a chubber!

PickAChew · 20/02/2025 23:31

She was far from skinny but she's busty and broad shouldered so the clothes she wore made her look bigger than she was.

OrangeCrusher · 20/02/2025 23:32

Letitia Dean was absolutely gorgeous when she was younger, still is, but such a big deal was made about her body. It was the same with Kim Wilde, she too was gorgeous but the fixation by the tabloids about her body/size was outrageous. I’m so glad things have changed.

MrsPinkSky · 20/02/2025 23:35

She was fat up until about a year ago when she lost weight pretty drastically.

Gnarab24 · 20/02/2025 23:39

the problem here is you are viewing the 80’s through the lens of extreme obesity as a result of ultra processed foods and sedentary lifestyle. When I was at high school in the 80’s the ‘fat’ girls were no larger than 16-18, but the rest of us were 8-12 max.
One thing I’ve noticed these days is that even the slim girls have ‘flabby’ bottoms and lots of cellulite, we are living in a society that is harming us with lack of exercise/mobility and shit food and pretending that Sharon in eastenders wasn’t fat doesn’t help.
The problem is that lots of people are making enormous amounts of money making people unhealthy (and even more are making more money pretending to try to fix those health problems)so good luck getting policy makers to change anything

User1786 · 20/02/2025 23:43

She was certainly overweight in the beginning and pretty much always until recently. We have just got used to most people being overweight

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/02/2025 23:45

tbf, I think we have forgotten what healthy human beings are supposed to look like.

She was plump, yes.

JohnTheRevelator · 20/02/2025 23:45

I know from experience that back in the 80s,you only had to be a stone or 2 overweight for people to consider you absolutely massive. Anyone bigger than a size 12 was seen as obese.

She wasn't a healthy weight

mondaytosunday · 21/02/2025 00:05

She was definitely on the plumper side for sure.

HRTQueen · 21/02/2025 00:06

She was a teenager and had what we called puppy fat

I can remember watching the first episode very clearly and chatting about it at school the next day, even our teachers joined in

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/02/2025 00:06

My father organised an event at which she was the paid "celeb". she was late, a PITA and crap, so by that point no one cared!

But yes I think that she was overweight as a late teen, and is still now.

BaMamma · 21/02/2025 00:07

No?

What has changed? Making being obese ok? I prefer the old days thanks.

I don't disagree that we have a problem with obesity and low quality food paired with sedantary lifestyles... But the way you talk about other women's bodies is quite awful.

I notice you didn't mention young men with "flabby" bottoms and cellulite.

There's a way to say things that acknowledges an issue without being rude.

ChessorBuckaroo · 21/02/2025 00:13

Damn, thread reminded me I missed the live episode.

Been ages since I watched. But yes, Sharon was always a bit plump. She looked great though. Sam Fox has always been similar I would say.

TattooGuineaPig · 21/02/2025 00:20

Take off the 20 lbs added by the film camera and factor in the statistic that she is a very short actress, and for shorties, 5 lbs can look like an extra 20 anyway.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/02/2025 00:20

BaMamma · 21/02/2025 00:07

No?

No

KittenPause · 21/02/2025 00:22

She was definitely chubby compared to most of us in the 80's

But compared to now no not really

People are fatter these days and less healthy for it

oldmanandtheangel · 21/02/2025 00:24

Cameras add pounds. As a teenager, I used to regularly bunk off school and hang outside the Eastenders studio (mid 80s). Saw Letitia plenty of times and she was not fat. She was /is short and broad, and busty; I'm slightly younger than her and we were very size conscious then. She was always with Susan Tully (Michelle) and next to her she did look bigger. But, not fat. Even by 80s standards. She was like, glamour girl standard. Very Sam Fox like at the time. But my friends and me were always aware of how much slimmer she looked in real life. Of course, the already very slim ones looked tiny.. .like Anita Dobson, or Linda Davidson (Mary)
