Having watched old Eastenders, do you remember Sharon was said to be fat. Looking back now she’s completely healthy or am I misremembering this. Also who remembers Special K can you punch more than an inch advert.

@JohnTheRevelator have you seen the episode of tales of the unexpected where a woman joins a diet club because she weighs ten and a half stone? That's less than some people's target weight now! I know they were just stories but they are indicative of the culture at the time.

Oh yes,I saw that on one of the Freeview channels a couple of years ago. I remember thinking bloody hell, she weighs only slightly more than my target weight!

CerealPosterHere · 21/02/2025 08:19

She’s definitely lost weight

She was just busty with a chubby face.

The reverse of me in my bigger days. I was a good couple of stone overweight, but because I have a smallish bust and slim face, I ‘got away with it’.

What has changed? Making being obese ok? I prefer the old days thanks.

Maybe, paying attention to someone's singing ability rather than their size? I don't want to listen to a crap singer just because they look the part.

Neither of those photos are from the 80s though.

I was a teenager in the 1980s, I was what was a size 12 then, probably equivalent to a size 8-10 now, a healthy weight, and definitely considered myself too curvy and remember being shouted at in the street for having a big arse. I'm short and an hourglass shape.

Rugbyrover · 21/02/2025 10:57

I definitely viewed her as being fat in the 80s 😳 but I also viewed myself as fat which helpfully led to decades of yo-yo dieting and being even fatter now.

Arraminta · 21/02/2025 11:05

She has a very large face with a square jaw and has the classic 'apple on a stick' shape. That's all. I do think she needs to stop the WLIs now though. Also she looks so much better with short hair, the school girl poker straight blonde hair doesn't flatter her.

Edited

Happened to me too back in the 2000s, I wasn't even overweight but my issue is that I'm pear shaped so my top half is skinny which makes my probably average sized lower half look bigger.

Doesn't matter what I do, my legs will always be bigger and I will always have cellulite. It's definitely not diet related because whilst it's not perfect it's pretty good and it's not from being sedentary because I'm far from it.

However, 20+ years ago anybody who wasn't super thin did stand out and I think things are better now in that respect. There is more understanding of body types but there is definitely an increase in obesity. I don't think we glorify it as a society though, being overweight is still seen as undesirable.

Things change though, in times of limited food people are thin, in times of unlimited food, people are fat. It's always going to be the case. I don't know about anybody else but being a "normal" weight is hard work, I'm running 4 days a week, weight lifting 3 days a week and walking loads. I'm restricting my calories and it's all effort and some days I wonder if it's worth it.

Putting her weight aside, I think that her hairstyle makes her look harsh, and does nothing for her.

Yes, that short crop she had back in the Nineties really suited her.

What's changed is that women don't have to fit into one mould. Women, including younger women have different shapes, these are now not seen as something we need to change. As someone who has always had a big bum and thighs (mixed heritage, but white looking) I was glad that we aren't bombarded by the need to reduce our bodies, but have big boobs. I've ruined my teeth thanks to 80's diet coke diet. My friends were doing the cabbage soup or boiled egg diet. It was constant. Many wouldn't give up smoking incase they got an appetite.

Letitia has a naturally plump face and big breasts, which made her look bigger. Put in sharon, eastenders, young and go on images. She goes from slim to slightly overweight. Her and Susan tully became such good friends because of the negative focus on Sharon's weight and Michelle's bad skin.

oldmanandtheangel · 21/02/2025 14:39

I'm busty with a round face but I'm tall. I'd hate to be picked apart like this (although I have been in past... but not on social media!). I actually hope Letitia doesn't read this, as she's lovely . None of the men are being analysed like this

Papergirl1968 · 21/02/2025 14:58

I haven’t watched Eastenders for years but I just had a look on wiki and it says Letitia struggled with her self confidence due to the continual media focus on her appearance and due to that, and back pain, got a boob reduction.
It’s hard enough being a teen anyway but a teen growing up in the public eye must have been very tough.
I was a 14ish at secondary school and a 16ish when I started work but was tall and big boned so wasn’t skinny but probably didn’t look like I carried far too much weight either.
I’d like to be back to that size now…

WorriedRelative · 21/02/2025 15:24

She's a strawberry shape, top heavy, with a big bust. The fashion of the 80s made her top half look even bigger. Her face is deceptive too due to shape, with full cheeks. Trouble is she was mainly seen waist up, so the impression was she was chubby especially next to a very slim Anita Dobson. She wasn't thin but probably had a normal bmi.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 22/02/2025 08:44

Yep, it's weird how Sharon/Letitia was classed as chubby, (in the 1980s and 1990s,) because she really wasn't. There was a time in the 1980s and 1990s where I thought I was chubby too, and looking back at photos I was slim! Like today's version of a size 8, for most of the 1980s and 1990s. (Size 10-12 then.) I am 5 ft 4 and rose from size 10-12, and just under 9 stone - to 10 stone 4 and size 14 (for about a year,) - and I thought I looked like a HIPPO! I was wearing mens shirts to cover all the 'flab' for a while, until I 'slimmed down' to under 9 stone again!

How DAFT was I?!

This all reminds me of The Full Monty. (Late 1990s.) Mark Addy played the 'fat bloke.' Hmm All his mates took the piss, as he was a 'big fat git.' (His mates words sorry...) He did seem a bit chubby at the time, but when you look at him now (from the 1990s,) he doesn't look even chubby. He just has a 'dad-bod.' On the group pic he is the one on the far right of the pic... SO weird that he was classed at 'fat!'

(Hopefully my pics load soon!)

.

Christ, you seem pretty invested in another woman's appearance.

Why are you on a thread about a woman's appearance if you don't think people should be talking about a woman's appearance?

@CerealPosterHere

She’s definitely lost weight

We know she lost weight as an adult, but we are talking about her size as a teen.
