How Can The World Stand By While Trump Sucks Up To Putin?

Nolieinforme · 19/02/2025 20:28

OK, so this probably isn't an AIBU, but I'm speechless that Trump is behaving like a bully and seems to be getting away with it.

He just lies. "Zelensky is a dictator" "Ukraine started the war" "Putin has done nothing wrong" etc, etc. I can hardly believe what's been said on the news today.

Why are the rest of the world letting this happen? If America want's to align themselves with Russia, then we should be returning the Chagos Islands without the huge sum of money promised, closing all the US airbases in the UK, closing the US embassy, and expelling their diplomats, etc, etc.

Trump is a madman and what is going to happen if no-one stands up to him? If this was anyone else they just wouldn't get away with it.

Tell me you don't realise how over-reliant we are on the US without telling me you don't know how over-reliant we are on the US.

Embassy wise. Take a trip down to London and have a look daily on how long the line is for the Embassy.... that's just for Non-immigrant visas. Immigrant visas get let in via the front. Closing an embassy will impact UK citizens more than the US, Eg those attending for marriage based green cards have likely been separated from their spouse for the best part of 21-22 months. Closing and stopping that would increase demand on UK immigration (UK marriage visas can be obtained in 30 working days if premium processing is selected.

Closing US airbases in the UK? Will do more damage to the UK.
Look deeper into our military:
. P8 Poseidon - Deal with the US
. Reaper/Protector - US
. F-35 Program - US
. RJ - US
. Sentinel - Retired and sold to the US Army who intend to update and make it serviceable
. E3D Sentry - Retired before E7 is FOC.
Close the US airbases and they'd cut support to the projects we have with them. Our military would pretty much cease to operate effectively.

Oh my days - how has it got to this?

Read the key findings.

I won’t be posting anymore about this as it’s not really relevant to the heart of the thread. But I think you’re acting faux naive on purpose.

It’s not faux naive when you’re talking crap, it’s true confident 😂. I don’t need your useless links that say nothing, I am simply making it clear to other posters you said something untrue

One thing that I think is new is the number of apparently "pro-Trump" posters that appeared on here in recent weeks.
And suddenly our local FB page seems to have lots of pro-Trump/Putin posts from anonymous people, as does one of the FB interest groups I'm in

It does look like a concerted effort to change opinion via social media.

Definitely. Some of them have OTT views and post obvious lies, so they stand out.

You don’t need my report from the IFS because you don’t like what it says, you mean? It has a factual breakdown of the rise in non-pension benefit claims, and even has international comparison. It’s all there - don’t read it if you don’t want to, but saying I’m ’talking crap’ because you don’t like the facts is just childish.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:02

@Wildflowers99 you were the one who made stuff up?

FancyRedRobin · 20/02/2025 15:03

America has had an outsize influence in world affairs, with mixed results. They are on their own journey now, and I'm not sure any of us want to go where they are going.
Each country has to stand back now and create or solidify alliances.
This could be a real opportunity for European unity.

About what? Don’t use a 5% misquotation to make out my entire point isn’t valid. You won’t even read the links I’ve posted because then you’d have to argue against them and you can’t. By all means call the IFS and tell them they’re wrong if you want to - good luck!

VexedofVirginiaWater · 20/02/2025 14:58

Oh my days - how has it got to this?

Because successive Conservative and Labour governments before them haven't taken military procurement, military development or defense seriously. It's been underfunded for a long time.

Question is, if we ditch the US, who do we team up with for development?
Tempest, a slow burner 6th gen fighter being developed by BAE is being touted to other countries to assist with funding as the UK can't do it alone.... FYI Saudi Arabia was one of the countries approached.

We can’t do anything to stop him.

He’s the most powerful man in the world, with the richest man in the world at his right hand.

He’s the biggest bully in the playground and he’s decided to team up with the other bullies.

We have no teacher to run to and ‘make him stop’ - it’s a survival of the fittest, Lord of the Flies scenario, and it isn’t going to be pretty.

Indeed. The whole Trump scenario reminds me an episode of The Twilight Zone called 'It's a Good Life'. A six year old boy has god-like powers, including mind-reading, and rules over a town of adults with bizarre cruelty, but insisting that everyone be happy all the time - everyone's too scared to even think bad thoughts because of the awful punishment he wreaks on them.

A couple of people try to speak up against him, and... well, look it up, it's chilling... 😦

This is a thread about how hard power is the only kind of power that matters, when it comes down to it, and how the West is slowly remembering that.

The military underpins that.

Ours is not currently sufficient to defend us because it has been systematically underfunded because we have designed it to support a world where we only send a few troops to help out primarily US-led foreign wars every now and then. That world is potentially going away. It's entirely reasonable to discuss what we've been spending our money on instead of investing in defence, and whether we need to realise that some of those things are luxuries and we now need to cut our cloth.

Agree. We need to raise £££ for the military, and fast. I’m staggered by the number of posters who seem to think the military is a luxury right wing toy rather than the only thing that stands between us and the likes of Putin.

The best thing for the EU and other allies to do is increase defence spending and prepare

Not much can be done except try not to escalate or inflame further

I've said it often

This is world war 3. This is how it is fought and we're already in the middle of it

I do think Mumsnet could do more to weed out the oblivious bots and shills.

MissyB1 · 20/02/2025 15:17

What we need (just my opinion), is Trump, Putin, and Netanyahu all in the same room - then enters a bloody good hit man!

Do you think the UK public will pay more taxes?

I think the public pays enough tax and the money should be raised by cuts in areas where there is significant and disproportionate overspend.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:22

I don't think anyone is shocked by that contribution! 😆

Exactly, if you're worried about the rise of expansionist foreign powers, you should want us to have a well-oiled military!

FYI to previous posters, I'm not paid by anyone. If you're seeing that opinions on Ukraine have shifted it's because it's become obvious over the past months/years that the conflict is in stalemate. People may have had different views at the start of the war.

Well if tax increases are imposed to raise the money, they’ll have to. The public don’t get to chose what level of tax they pay

on the other hand, the public purse is about choices. There is obviously the potential to move money around and decide what you’d rather not spend on vs a weak border/ weak nato or, maybe you won’t have a job to pay taxes with anyone since you’ll be in war.

peace in Europe has been long standing and brilliant for us. But it can’t be taken for granted, it can change at anytime.

cosying up with the Saudis is another option. They have money but basically nothing else. They’re are on their way to becoming an important world
player

the world order is changing and we need to be open to partnering with people we have ignored previously.

It's all about Trump's 'America First'.

What's best for America. Full stop.

Being at war with Putin is not what's best for America - so Trump will do or say whatever it takes for it not to be the case.

Well, that’s his job. President of the United States, not of Europe, or Ukraine, or Africa …..I just wish our government would take a similar stance ( or find someone who could give them a couple of hints on how to achieve this).

Wildflowers99 · 20/02/2025 15:32

trainermush · 20/02/2025 15:22

Why would they be when we have the highest tax burden in 70 years and some areas of spending are ballooning beyond all proportion? It’s hardly a reckless stance to take is it?
