How Can The World Stand By While Trump Sucks Up To Putin?

Nolieinforme · 19/02/2025 20:28

OK, so this probably isn't an AIBU, but I'm speechless that Trump is behaving like a bully and seems to be getting away with it.

He just lies. "Zelensky is a dictator" "Ukraine started the war" "Putin has done nothing wrong" etc, etc. I can hardly believe what's been said on the news today.

Why are the rest of the world letting this happen? If America want's to align themselves with Russia, then we should be returning the Chagos Islands without the huge sum of money promised, closing all the US airbases in the UK, closing the US embassy, and expelling their diplomats, etc, etc.

Trump is a madman and what is going to happen if no-one stands up to him? If this was anyone else they just wouldn't get away with it.

Agreed.
I have seen the tide turn massively on social media in the last month or two. I think this is what propaganda looks like in the 21st century and we have no real defence.

I'm curious - what does it look like? What are you saying? That these are bots?

Trump is amazing. The changes he is making is all for the American people. Sadly we are stuck With Two Tier Starmer. Vile man who hates the British people including farmers and the elderly. Sends all our taxes overseas and does nothing for the homeless or Farmers or people struggling on low wages. Hopefully Reform will sort out this shower of shit!! We can learn a lot from Trump especially as he is giving back taxes that were fraudulently claimed to his people. And kicking out the violent illegals what is there to hate!!

Oh dear.

It’s not my job to educate you.

If you were educated you know
it's pointless posting "facts" without any evidence.., I don't mind educating you though 😆

I think Putin is manipulating Trump and Trump is too blind to see it .

Putin hung on for years hoping Trump would get back in.

I mean it's fine to not be a fan of Starmer but to be so indoctrinated. Christ it's depressing!

The country was invaded, what do you expect?

On 25th January, the New York Times reported that he still has the support and trust of Ukrainians but by a very slim majority-52% and that he is increasingly blocking out advisers who think differently to him.

The Ukrainian constitution demand that elections must be held as soon as martial law is lifted.

Is it possible that there might be some sort of correlation between Zelensky's dwindling support in the polls and a reluctance to co-operate with some sort of negotiation, which , if successful, would lead to the lifting of martial law and an immediate election.

Maybe not but then again...maybe.

potatopaws · 20/02/2025 14:21

Already, within the first page of this thread,
there are posts influencing the conversation trying to make this a debate about:

  • Benefits and the welfare state
  • The NHS
  • Pensioners vs younger generation.

No! This is a thread about international politics and Trump’s behaviour towards Vladimir Putun.

JHound · 20/02/2025 14:22

Because he is a bully and this is who Americans wanted.

And he sucked up to Putin his first time round. Nobody should be surprised. Trump and Putin are basically the same person.

I think he's calling Zelensky a dictator because Zelensky has cancelled elections, which is the type of things dictators tend to do.

Several polls-not all- are showing that his popularity has fallen, so a cynical person might not marvel at the fact that the elections are cancelled.

OK here's my question for you.

Do you think Winson Churchill was a dictator?

Trump isn’t reading this (as far as I know) so endless posts about how deplorable he is would be duplicitous and useless. Of course we’ve moved on to the reasons we now lack the strength to stand up to him/Putin. And our massive overspends on other budgets and the defunding of our military is a massive massive part of this. It’s a problem where the chickens are now coming home to roost.

And how does the NYT know this? I doubt it’s conducting polls in or sending investigative journalists to Ukraine somehow.

Notonthestairs · 20/02/2025 14:24

Trust in Zelensky is 57% according to Jim Pickard in the FT.

Shame we will never get an accurate report of trust in Putin.
Maybe he could hold free and fair elections first.

ExpensiveBiscuits · 20/02/2025 14:25

Winston Churchill did not impose martial law.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 20/02/2025 14:25

IsawwhatIsaw · 20/02/2025 13:27

When Putin invaded Ukraine, Trump called him a genius.
And Trump had repeatedly indicated he wouldn’t continue funding the war in Ukraine years ago. He seems this as a European issue, not a US one.

So the American electorate voted for this.
and to be honest, Europe should have been paying more for its own defence.

Trump has overturned 80 years of US policy in one month.
But embracing Putin is on another level….

But he's been embracing Putin for years (did we ever find out what they talked about in Helsinki?) so none of this is a surprise.
Terrifying but not surprising.

I don't see the problem with America putting America first. They've given hundreds of billions to Ukraine.

Zelensky needs to go. He's diabolical.

Care to explain why you think that?

How does any poll know anything?
They're generally accepted as showing the way the wind is blowing, although not always.

I see James Cleverly has announced that defence spending should be 3% of GDP. Presumably it should have been from 2010 onwards too. I wonder why it wasn’t.

Yes, Zelensky imposed martial law very quickly.

The country was invaded. what should he have done...thrown a tea party?!
It's all America First and we don't want to get involved now, but how would they have felt if he'd had that attitude after 9/11.
Somne quid pro quo was due here surely?

That's not a ringing endorsement for Zelensky, especially when he imposed martial law pretty much immediately.
Almost half his own people, in a country ruled by martial law, don't trust him.

It's not really anything to boast about.

It’s better than the endorsement for Trump. 🤷‍♀️

Notonthestairs · 20/02/2025 14:29

trust in Zelensky has gone up from 52% in December to 57% in February.
(Kyviv International Institute of Sociology.)

Suspect that is a better rating than Trump.
Pretty much guaranteed better than Putin.

Although I do notice that when a poll giving a ringing endorsement to Zelensky is positive, this remark very rarely crops up.
I do so wonder why.

Agree completely. But what’s done is done, sadly.
