Am scared, the worst I've ever seen is "in bed with flu a few days" never something like this.

(He's at home with a pulse ox to check if it gets worse then we have to go hospital)

Scary for you.
Hand hold from me
How old is he? Is he generally well?
Anyone else at home to keep you company?

LeaveALittleNote · 19/02/2025 20:01

How frightening. I’ve had pneumonia and it was extremely unpleasant, but the antibiotics are a god-send, and having one of those oxymeters is brilliant. I take it he’s on antibiotics? If so, you’re doing all the right things, and chances are he’ll be fine.

Greysquirrels · 19/02/2025 20:04

Does he have any other health issues? Most people recover well from pneumonia.

Thank you!
He's mid 40s...physically generally well, mentally struggles
Only DC5 at home and we're self isolating so we don't spread whatever DP has (thankfully so far we haven't picked it up but nonetheless..)

Yes he only just started them because we thought it was just a normal virus but after 7 days he wasn't feeling any better so went to the GP .. hope the antibiotics turn things around!

None... That's a relief to hear...as I hear the word and assume the worst 🙈

I had pneumonia last year. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t pleasant. And I know without antibiotics it would have been a lot worse. But I recovered fine. They debated keeping me in hospital one night but I begged to go home and they agreed on the condition I monitor my oxygen etc. I was fine.

haggisaggis · 19/02/2025 20:14

My dm had pneumonia twice. The last time she was around 77 years old with a serious heart condition. She was put on antibiotics and recovered at home. Although it is scary, I understand that today’s antibiotics make it a much less scary illness. I hope your dp recovers soon.

JollyGreenSleeves · 19/02/2025 20:18

If he is mid 40s and generally well physically, on antibiotics and has been left at home to recover then I’m pretty sure he will be fine.

Angels1111 · 19/02/2025 20:22

Thank you all. That's really reassuring. I've just never seen him fight for breath etc and associate "pneumonia" with "life threatening".. I also don't really know what we'd do with DC if I get ill too or need to take DP to hospital ...the obvious choice is asking DGP to look after DC but that's putting them under risk

His oxygen is below 90 and he was advised to go to ane in that case but he thinks the visit to the GP knocked him for 6 and a good night's sleep (as good as you can get with a constant cough) plus the antibiotics will sort things

I had pneumonia last year (40f) and it was horrible but the antibiotics will fix it! The fact they are letting him be a treated at home is a definite good sign as it means his obs are stable. I found it helped to sleep propped up on pillows. It did take quite a long time to get better - a good 6 weeks until a semblance of normality but if you let him rest, keep his fluids up and take the antibiotics then it will be ok.

romdowa · 19/02/2025 20:24

I'd pneumonia years ago and once the steriods/ antibiotics and inhalers kicked in I wasn't too bad. I did end up being on inhalers for about 6 months after but no lasting effects

If his O2 is below 90% then he should follow medical advice and go to hospital

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 19/02/2025 20:27

If his oxygen levels are below 90 with no known respiratory problems usually and he’s struggling for breath I’m afraid he needs A&E, he obviously needs oxygen, please don’t delay

He was advised to go to A&E if his oxygen was below 90? It is below 90, but he's ignoring that advice and staying at home? Is that right?

ChoccieCornflake · 19/02/2025 20:28

Big hand hold! And yes to the posters above - he needs to go to A&E as advised

Nursemumma92 · 19/02/2025 20:29

If his oxygen levels are below 90% he needs to go to A+E now to be put on oxygen, he does not have safe levels in his blood. Hope he improves soon with some hospital treatment.

Yes. But he went to the gp where it was 92. The GP said treat at home but go to hospital if it drops below 90.
Then he got home (5 mins later) and it was 88 on our home machine. So he thinks it's okay to wait and see rather than tire himself out more.

He's sleeping upright! And seems to have actually fallen asleep so hopefully hopefully hopefully he'll get better

ChoccieCornflake · 19/02/2025 20:32

It's really not ok to wait. At the absolute minimum phone 111 (you do this if he's asleep)

whatonearthisgoingonnow · 19/02/2025 20:32

He'll be totally fine, nothing to worry about mid 40s.

My child had pneumonia shortly after birth and nearly died, now that was scary.

JollyGreenSleeves · 19/02/2025 20:32

So you’ve been told to go to a&e if his oxygen drops below 90- it is below 90, but you’re looking for a ‘handhold’ (aka attention) on mumsnet rather than follow medical advice and get him to a&e?!
Hell of a drip feed.

Good idea will do that now
