Please help send messages of support
Am scared, the worst I've ever seen is "in bed with flu a few days" never something like this.

(He's at home with a pulse ox to check if it gets worse then we have to go hospital)

OP posts:
thaegumathteth · 19/02/2025 22:21

I think you're doing the right thing. Don't panic though- the overwhelming likelihood is he will be fine after treatment. Don't let yourself think that hospital is the worst thing ever. It's a means of getting well.

Sorry for the lack of replies. We decided to go to ane. Grandparents on their way and then off we'll hesd. so will update later.

Glad to read that - it's the right place for him, and hopefully he'll be home again soon x

Better safe than sorry. Pneumonia is utterly horrible, I hope your DH feels better soon

I'm sure that's the right decision.
Sending kindest thoughts to both of you

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 19/02/2025 22:28

I'm sorry OP. It's a scary time.

I just want to reassure you that it's not the death sentence it used to be.

I had a stint where I developed pneumonia 4 years on a trot around Christmas. It was bloody awful and took months to clear up. I had a horrible dry cough that seemed to catch me at the most awkward times during recovery, and I spent more time horizontal than vertical.

Each time I was able to be treated at home or as an outpatient, though many times the first round of antibiotics wasn't enough and I had to submit sputum samples regularly.

I just want to let you know that although his recovery may be bumpy and possibly even timely it's really important that you look after yourself too. Don't extend more of yourself than you can afford to give, and make sure your cup is filled before you pour to others, even your partner.

HallidayJones6779 · 19/02/2025 22:30

Hand hold here. Pleased you’ve decided to go to ane. You wouldn’t have rested at home, best to get him checked properly.

L0bstersLass · 19/02/2025 22:33

Very pleased to hear that you're going to A&E.
Much better to get it checked out.
Wishing you both well.

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 19/02/2025 22:40

I think you made the right decision to go to A&E. I had pneumonia a few years ago and ended up in hospital. I honestly hadn't realised how ill I was. It's not something to take chances with.

Sending healthy thoughts to your DH and strength to you.

Maia77 · 19/02/2025 22:44

My mum's (78) oxygen was 76 and she wasn't massively struggling to breathe. She felt tired. She was being treated with antibiotics at home. Didn't have oximeter but had blood tests and her CPR was 200 so went to A&E and was hospitalised. Stayed in hospital for a week, was on oxygen. So I wouldn't worry too much if his oxygen is around 90.

Lougle · 19/02/2025 22:48

DH is 48 and had pneumonia before Christmas. His oxygen levels never dropped despite quite a severe upper lobe pneumonia and a CRP of 680. He was admitted to hospital and given IV antibiotics for a few days. As it was Christmas, they let him out after 4 days. He felt quite unwell for another week or so, then gradually started to improve.

Riiiight · 19/02/2025 22:50

Calm down?
I had bad pneumonia after a csection, cured with antibiotics at home, no adult input while alone with 5 children the whole time. It's not the death sentence it once was. It's easily cured if you're of a good age and health.

katseyes7 · 19/02/2025 22:52

I have asthma and l had pneumonia when l was about your DPs age.
I'd felt crap for about a week, but put it down to 'just another chest infection'.
I was stunned when the doctor said it was pneumonia, but it explained how bad l'd felt. Thank goodness for antibiotics, though.
I imagine if they were concerned he'd be in hospital.
Everything crossed for you.

Hh ...I currently have pneumonia I honestly feel like death. I'm a single mum and trying to get lo to school had been nightmare. I literally sat on kitchen floor this morning feeling like was going to pass out as apparently that's normal with low oxygen. I then have a bollocking from school about daughter being late and that they issuing me a fpn as its 6 lates and 2 full days off (my mum died ) ... its scarey but nothing lasts forever. I've just been given different antibiotics and feeling slightly better already doxicillin or something.

That sounds terrible. I hope you can get someone to help and get well soon. It can take months to get completely better so look after yourself.

Whoopsmahoot · 19/02/2025 22:55

My son had pneumonia at age 20 ( he’s immunocompromised) Oral antibiotics were prescribed but 24 hrs later he deteriorated and was admitted to hospital. I can’t tell you what a massive improvement with iv antibiotics made in just 36 hrs. Work so much quicker and he was out in a couple days. Sometimes you just need to get the good stuff!

I am so glad you are going to a and e, don't let them fob you off. Push for proper tests once you get seen. Don't minimise things and make sure he is properly assessed.

tipsyraven · 19/02/2025 23:08

Pneumonia should be taken very seriously, particularly if very breathless, so I’m glad you’ve gone to A&E, OP.

Like all illnesses, some people get it mildly (to all those who have said it is not dangerous) and others get it severely, particularly the elderly, children or those with underlying health conditions. I was one of the latter (but in none of those categories) and spent two weeks in hospital and six months recovering. I nearly died. I’ve also know people get walking pneumonia which doesn’t need hospital treatment at all as it is a mild bacterial infection.

Iloveanicegarden · 19/02/2025 23:15

My sats were 86 earlier in the year. It was early evening and when I phoned 111 they sent an ambulance straight away. I was given oxygen and antibiotics and kept in hospital for about a week. Then on release I was told I'd had pneumonia and have since had several chest xrays and given the all clear. I am 75 with several co-morbidiities and I'm alive to tell the tale. Try not to worry.

Hollyhobbi · 19/02/2025 23:15

This thread is a perfect example of why medical advice should not be looked for on an online forum.

Namerchangee · 19/02/2025 23:19

I’ve had pneumonia a few times, including whilst pregnant. The antibiotics will really shift it OP.

mommatoone · 19/02/2025 23:23

JollyGreenSleeves · 19/02/2025 20:32

So you’ve been told to go to a&e if his oxygen drops below 90- it is below 90, but you’re looking for a ‘handhold’ (aka attention) on mumsnet rather than follow medical advice and get him to a&e?!
Hell of a drip feed.

Wow, who has rattled your cage! No need for patronising comments when OP is looking for advice.

Mama2many73 · 19/02/2025 23:26

My DM phoned late one night and asked my dh to drive them to the hospital as my DF was poorly.
My DH was shocked at the state of my DF (68 with heart issues) and didnt think they'd get him to hospital. Ambulance was going to be at least 90mins.
Diagnosed with pneumonia, antibiotics given, kept in hospital and he made a full recovery. My husband was shocked how well he looked within a few days of the antibiotics.
If he has no other health issues I'd hope your DH wouldmake a good, quick recovery BUT he needs to take notice of what he's told. Please call 111 at the very least.

ThatDaringTurtle · 19/02/2025 23:29

I was in hospital 4 weeks ago with pneumonia. Does he have a temperature? Maybe a bad infection? I would go to hospital.

I had 2 types of antibiotics from GP. They didn't work. Had to go back to GP, third time and he sent me to hospital. Was diagnosed with Pneumonia. Was in hospital for three nights. If you feel like your not improving go back to A&E.

battgirlatheart · 19/02/2025 23:42

If it doesn’t start to get better get steroids.
I had chest infections on and off from December to August last year when I was finally admitted to hospital with pneumonia and spent eight days in and after every test going and tube in lung etc was diagnosed with something called cryptogenic organising pneumonia. No known cause!! Thought to be auto immune thing. If it comes back after it gets better seek further help and don’t be put off. I just kept being given steroids and antibiotics and now every time I’m weaned off antibiotics it starts again.
