Please help send messages of support
Am scared, the worst I've ever seen is "in bed with flu a few days" never something like this.

(He's at home with a pulse ox to check if it gets worse then we have to go hospital)

I really hope that he recovers quickly.

I know you can't force him to go but under 90 is definitely serious. When my now ex h wouldn't go for medical help when he clearly needed it, I asked if he had his insurance and will sorted as he had a responsibility to his family. It had the desired effect.

I don't want to scare you but I'd rather that and he go to hospital than you lose him.

Yeh that's the sort of thought that kicks him into gear, I have to get cross to get him moving.
I think if we didn't have DC I'd have bundled him into the car as soon as I saw the reading. I just feel so stuck - all our close friends/neighbours are on a group holiday (which we are meant to be on) so I only have my parents to watch DC and they'd take a while to get here, by which time DP was fast asleep.
I'm also scared to ask someone in case we pass the infection to them but needs must.

My DD had it last Christmas and we were told to take her to A&E if her chest was heaving up and down for breath. If the antibiotics work, you should see a really positive change in 48 hours. If no better by then, seek medical help - the first antibiotics did nothing for DD and she was getting worse. A second type were miraculous and she had started to bounce back in 24 hours. Then there is a longer period of taking it easy with exercise etc til they get their stamina back.

BleachedJumper · 19/02/2025 21:02

Wishing him a speedy recovery, do keep an eye on the stat readings this evening.

And I would also suggest that when he’s fully recovered from this, you consider getting married. These kind of events really do focus the mind as to what being married in a family means for you all.

Maria1982 · 19/02/2025 21:05

Hi. My DH had mnemonic last November.
it was an absolutely bugger, I had also never seen his so ill, and seeing him struggle for breath was scary.

I understand not wanting to go to A and e, all I can say is keep an eye on his oxygen saturation and bear mind he can go downhill quickly. My DH had made an appointment with a GP for 9am the following day but I ended up having to take him to an and e as his oxygen dipped under 90.
the hospital said their limit was discharging people was 92- any lower and he would need to be admitted on ward.

sorry I’ve speed read all your updates - has he had chest x ray, and is he on antibiotics?

Maria1982 · 19/02/2025 21:07

Apologies silly typo for pneumonia.

also to say I understand the difficulty with taking him in to a and e when you have children - I had to wake our 2 year old at 1am to take DH to hospital, it’s hard.

ChoccieCornflake · 19/02/2025 21:07

Well done on getting advice from 111, and I'm really glad his numbers are better than they were! I hope they continue to improve and he's feeling much better soon. It's absolutely terrifying both struggling to breathe, and being the person watching someone struggle to breath. Hold on in there!

He's gonna find it hard to take it easy. Now that he's asleep chest looks fine but I do think simply walking upstairs had him out of breath

He's on antibiotics no chest x ray...

...and for some reason it didn't occur to me that I could just take DC with us, thanks for that!

He's been doing this anyway as he read it loosens up mucus

My mum had it this time last year, it probably took her a good 6-8 weeks to get over it. She ended up in hospital for 2 days but she had lung cancer in 2018 and had a section of her lung removed so has a lower lung capacity than a healthy person.

It was horrible to see her so poorly, she struggled walking to the front drive or upstairs but we are nearly a year later and she is perfectly fine.

It is important to look after yourself too.

@Angels1111 i was in this position last year and nearly lost my husband due to him developing sepsis. Please familiarise yourself with the symptoms, it’s hard to spot but must be treated urgently. He’d been ill 3 days and we thought he was as improving as he’d finally been able to sleep and the wheezing had reduced but gp sent us straight to a&e where he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and later sepsis, ended up in icu. He walked (albeit very slowly) into the hospital, was never unconscious and we were shocked by the diagnosis. Not trying to scare you but this can easily get worse very quickly.

IveGotALovelyBunchOfCoconutss · 19/02/2025 21:19

If it helps I was hospitalised over Christmas with pneumonia while very pregnant. My oxygen sats were dropping to 85 which is what made me go in. It was rough for a couple of weeks but recovered well once on antibiotics and having fluids in hospital. Lots of rest, trying to sleep upright to limit the coughing, also used a vaporiser type thing when in bed with olbas oil in. I use it for my DS when he is ill and it helps a lot. It's scary but very treatable

Thank you...yes it's important to remember to look after myself ...DC on half term and DP I'll and self isolation has made for a tough combination

Antibiotics typically take a day and a half to kick in so you might see an improvement in the next couple of days

How did you know it was sepsis? I had been wondering about this but the GP didn't seem to think so.

Thanks, I'll keep checking every 30 mins or so to see if it's stable ...he was cold and had just exerted both times it dipped but I'm still worried

Oh that's good - dip straight after exertion would be absolutely normal

Namechangedforspooky · 19/02/2025 21:25

I haven’t had time to RTFT but if his O2 sats are below 90 he should go to A&E to get checked. 111 will not be able to do anything over the phone unless they can assess F2F soonish.

I’ve worked in A&E for about 30 years and you would definitely not be wasting our time. We check sats at triage and can give O2 even if you end up needing to wait for ages if we are busy
Best wishes for a speedy recovery

He's eating better today, last few days he didn't eat much at all. Otherwise he's trying to catch as much sleep as his body allows

I ate every day during my 2 weeks in hospital with pneumonia and didn’t feel poorly at all. The only symptom I had was low O2 & couldn’t breathe without O2. They wanted it above 96 at all times.
At home, your DH cannot get O2.
Please call an ambulance and tell them his O2 levels.

Do not think you’re burdening the NHS - you’re not! That’s what they’re there for.
Without being monitored through the night, if you’re both asleep and if your oximeter doesn’t have a warning alarm, you won’t know if it drops further.

Pls tell your husband not to be a hero and to get to A&E.

Yeh, I didn't think about it at first as the exertion was just walking from the car to the home and walking up the stairs which we do without thinking anything of it when in good health
