Am scared, the worst I've ever seen is "in bed with flu a few days" never something like this.

(He's at home with a pulse ox to check if it gets worse then we have to go hospital)

I’ve read your whole thread and want to echo others that I’m glad you’ve gone to a&e now. I hope he gets better soon.

Angels1111 · 19/02/2025 20:04

Thank you!
He's mid 40s...physically generally well, mentally struggles
Only DC5 at home and we're self isolating so we don't spread whatever DP has (thankfully so far we haven't picked it up but nonetheless..)

OP if it helps you to feel better, my elderly dad in his mid 70s had this last year. Quite severe as he put off seeing doc or going to hosp. But recovered quickly after meds. So I’d think your DP will be ok! Tough to watch though so my thoughts are with you X

FrangipaneMincies · 20/02/2025 00:02

Hi, HH here. We've both had pneumonia in our 40s, very unpleasant and felt really very poorly. He didn't get admitted, but should have. I was admitted as had A typical type. Took months to recover completely, lots of strong antibiotics. I hope your DH recovers quickly, but he probably needs admitting x

AnxiousRose · 20/02/2025 00:20

Hope he's feeling better soon OP x

ImDoneOnceAndForAll · 20/02/2025 00:28

Even sats of 92 are low and may require IV antibiotics and abit of supplement oxygen

Nanny0gg · 20/02/2025 00:33

Just putting this out there for the older MNers or those with other conditions:

The NHS offers the pneumococcal vaccine to people aged 65 and over, as well as people with certain long-term conditions or weakened immune systems

Well worth taking, clearly

backawayfatty1 · 20/02/2025 00:51

Hope he's ok x

It’s weird. The number of people are actually think that their personal experience trumps the advice of a GP and the hospital.
Fortunately, the OP and her husband have done absolutely the right thing.

Angels1111 · 20/02/2025 01:55

Thanks so much for the messages of support everyone. Will reply properly later. Thought I'd update that we've been seen, he's on oxygen and waiting for blood test results / doctor input.

No it's not weird it's scary. As I said before in this thread, I don't think people should be asking for medical advice on an internet forum.

Joystir59 · 20/02/2025 03:52

Phew, good to hear he's in the right place

XWKD · 20/02/2025 04:28

Good luck to you and your family OP. ❤️

Oakcupboard · 20/02/2025 04:36

My DM had it once, ended up in ICU - once they started IV antibiotics it was like magic.

my DM had other serious lung issues though, most people don’t get That bad

edit just seen that you are in hospital - def done the right thing. It’s so scary to watch someone fight for their breath. Xx

I haven’t had time to RTFT but if his O2 sats are below 90 he should go to A&E to get checked. 111 will not be able to do anything over the phone unless they can assess F2F soonish.

I’ve worked in A&E for about 30 years and you would definitely not be wasting our time. We check sats at triage and can give O2 even if you end up needing to wait for ages if we are busy
Best wishes for a speedy recovery

This. My DP is similar age to yours, had pneumonia last year and struggling to breathe. Went to A&E and he had O2 sats of less than 90% and they put him straight on oxygen and he was discharged home with it. They said anything under 94% was concerning. He was on oxygen for 4-5 days and antibiotics at home. It was very frightening. No prior health conditions. I would be very worried if they've told you to go to A&E with those levels and he won't.
My DP was so out of it that he couldn't make decisions and I had to take him to A&E.

Puppypower83 · 20/02/2025 06:10

Sorry just seen you've gone to hospital! I read the first page and panicked. Hope he's well soon.

Hollyhobbi · 19/02/2025 23:15

This thread is a perfect example of why medical advice should not be looked for on an online forum.

Yes this is one of the worst ones I've read. "my long lost nephew twice removed had o2 sats of 32% and he was fine, it's not a death sentence so stay at home!"

😶

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 20/02/2025 06:55

So glad to read your update that he has gone to hospital.
His GP shouldn't have let him go home with those oxygen levels.
I'm a very experienced nurse practitioner in the community and guidelines say anything under 92% a person needs blood gases (in hospital).

A fit and health person with sats 94% and under would have me sending them for a chest xray at least!
Also it's concerning that your husband's skin colour is dark brown. Pulse Oximeters are known that if your skin colour is darker brown they can give off false readings that are higher than normal.
During the covid pandemic a lot of people who were measuring their own 02 levels at home, people with darker skin were getting higher readings and not attending hospital and a lot of people died.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 20/02/2025 06:59

Also the only way to accurately diagnose pneumonia is a chest X-ray!

I’m glad you’ve taken DH to hospital @Angels1111 and I hope he gets better very soon xx

ShowOfHands · 20/02/2025 07:56

DH had pneumonia last year and was in hdu for 9 days. He's 43, fit and healthy and does triathlons for fun. His oxygen levels were below 85 on admission and hovered around 91 with high flow oxygen. It took him a long time to kick it. He was really very unwell. I have no doubt that his refusal to go to hospital earlier didn't help so I'm glad you're in the right place op.

eggsandwich · 20/02/2025 08:03

My husband had double pneumonia in his late 30’s, he went back and forwards to the doctors who checked his chest and just said he had a bad cold, my god he sounded awful, eventually when he started to have trouble breathing we went to A&E, where he was diagnosed with double pneumonia as GP missed it by only checking his chest and not his back, they said 2 more days and he’d would of died.

Please, if you are seriously worried go to A&E, we kept putting it off thinking it would get better.

ShowOfHands · 20/02/2025 08:08

To reassure you a little though op:

I know dh was really ill with pneumonia but that isn't the norm for a healthy man in his 40s, not with prompt treatment. They sent dh for tests after he'd recovered as they expected the severity of his illness indicated something underlying. They did the same thing 2yrs earlier when he had chicken pox and it turned into meningitis.

He does have EDS which doesn't help with his reaction to illnesses and he's also a shift worker of nearly 20yrs. It was nothing more than that.

MrsEG · 20/02/2025 08:23

Sending love, OP! I have pneumonia at the moment, I’m almost 40 with no prior lung issues. Started like a horrid virus, fever etc and just got progressively worse. I did have to really advocate for myself, keep going to the GP who eventually sent me for a chest x-Ray and it all went from there. I’m on the tail end now, finished my antibiotics and just resting up but I do feel better for the treatment. I really hope your DH is being treated and on the mend soon!

Comtesse · 20/02/2025 08:27

Riiiight · 19/02/2025 22:50

Calm down?
I had bad pneumonia after a csection, cured with antibiotics at home, no adult input while alone with 5 children the whole time. It's not the death sentence it once was. It's easily cured if you're of a good age and health.

Then you were badly let down by your friends and family which is a damn shame. Being unpleasant to OP won’t make you feel any better. Her DH went to A&E, quite rightly.

Bunnycat101 · 20/02/2025 08:29

@MoserRothOrangeandAlmond your post was really interesting to read. I was just wondering if the guidelines have been updated to differentiate between skin colour or do you just have to go by gut feel that 92% might not be right for darker skin and be more cautious?
