Women singers singing in their knickers.

I admit I'm older generation.
I'm a great admirer of singers such as Nina Simone, Linda Ronstadt, Suzi Quatro, Christine Perfect, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman etc, etc.
They all not only have great voices but also real musical talent.
And they also don't stand and sing in their knickers
So what is it with people like Beyonce and Rhianna? If they really are talented why do they need to sing in their knickers? Why do they need to use sex to sell their songs? They are powerful enough not to bend to the industry pressure on them. Why not stand or fall on their talents rather than on selling their sexuality.?

Well you’re not going to like Amyl and the Sniffers then…
Punks have been singing in their pants for 50 years… generally not to be sexy - deliberately to subvert that stereotype. See also because they’re bounding all over the place…

DurinsBane · 19/02/2025 18:35

Because women can wear what they want, and it isn’t for other women, or men, to tell them them at they can’t? At least that is what feminism is telling us

Isn’t it more leotards / dance wear than knickers? Quite normal for dancers of all bodies to wear small clothes

Yeah, that’s what I’m seeing. I searched for both Rihanna and Beyoncé concert costumes and didn’t see anything that looked like knickers. Beyoncé’s racier ones were still her covered from neck to ankles, just with flesh-coloured panels in them. And the legless leotard outfits still had thick tights for her legs. I read that women singers tend to wear one or two pairs of thick tights on stage to eliminate any normal jiggle of the legs/butt while dancing around that might draw attention.

That said, does anyone have examples of the “singing in knickers” outfits? OP?

SlashBeef · 19/02/2025 18:39

Is it just women of colour you'd like to cover up, OP? Confused

PanicPanicc · 19/02/2025 18:40

Rihanna hasn’t sung in a minute, what a weird entertainer to single out.

I think singers who go hard for the Lolita-esque aesthetic are a lot more concerning, to be honest.

That’s an urban myth started by the kind of idiots who think you can’t be a woman and also have a strong, athletic figure. She isn’t a man and isn’t trans.

She wasn’t actually a singer either; she was lip-syncing to a sample. She is/was a model and a dancer.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/02/2025 18:43

Oh op. I’m sorry to tell you but you’ve turned into your mother. Was she judgey and rude as well?

Agreed, can't help but notice the OP has failed to come back and answer why she keeps using these two singers as examples despite numerous posters pointing out why they don't fit her description....

Right? So transparent.

And OP hasn’t actually answered anyone’s questions, just doubles down on the knickers story.

I think you have misinterpreted my point.
Obviously men are 100% to blame for their actions.
But playing up to male fantasies and fetishes gives the idea that it is ok with women.
It is not ok.

I have not misinterpreted your comment. You are blaming women for men’s behaviour.

If a woman wants to revel in her sexuality she should be free to without people like you arguing “BuT wHaT aBoUT tHE imPAct oN mEN’s aTTituDES?”

What about them?

Why do I need to cover up and not be overtly sexual just because of men?

GretchenWienersHair · 19/02/2025 18:44

You can always watch or listen to other singers who don’t “sing in their knickers”, if you like.

BlueSilverCats · 19/02/2025 18:45

Why indeed?

Beyoncé brings her young daughter Blue Ivy (I believe she’s 12) out as a dancer in her tour, but her outfits are always a full cover up in contrast to Beyoncé’s version of the outfits. Which is appropriate and correct- Beyoncé is an adult woman who can choose what she wants to wear at her own headline tour, and Blue is a child who Beyoncé safeguards and makes appropriate choices for in terms of performance clothing. See photos attached. (I know Blue has worn some very grown up red carpet looks though!)

Yep. I can see Beyonce can wear a lot of revealing clothes but it’s all dancing attire. And Rihanna has not performed in years and even when she did she was not particularly revealing. It’s just very weird examples.

To all those wittering on about empowerment blah blah, all I’m going to say is “Bianca Censori”. Because that’s the end result of continually eroding what’s considered acceptable.

So I trust none of the empowerment, you’re such a prude crowd did anything but applaud Bianca’s choice of outfit at the Grammy’s.

NeelyOHara1 · 19/02/2025 18:46

I was pleasantly surprised to see it's currently 70% YANBU.

AmiablePedant · 19/02/2025 18:33

???? I've danced around in my time wearing almost anything you could imagine; this is the first time anybody suggested to me that jeans impair dancing!

You drop into splits in jeans?

There was supposed to be a pic of Suzi Quattro in a leather bikini there , but it didn't work. Oh well.

Sex sells also artists today are competing with endless online pornographic content, making a good tune ain't enough you have to tap into something more be that violence or sex or money and sell that as well and for women that will usually be sex. In addition pop culture is completely contaminated with porn, essentially mainstream culture is porn sick.

Who mentioned empowerment?

What does performance attire to enable free movement when dancing have to do with a naked dress?

Beyonce doesn’t wear that much less than the average gymnast or ballet dancer.

steff13 · 19/02/2025 18:50

I didn't know what Linda Ronstadt was, so I googled.

Is this her? I feel like I can see through that top.

The empowerment of being the headline act of a sell out arena tour and making choices about the costumes, dance routines, sets and overall show performing multi million selling songs with messages of empowerment in the lyrics versus Bianca Censori standing naked and silent like a rabbit in the headlights isn’t comparable.

Rihanna and Beyoncé were odd choices with Sabrina Carpenter arguably the more relevant artist at the moment.

I think she looks beautiful, like an old school Hollywood pin up. She doesn't offend me.
