Women singers singing in their knickers.

I admit I'm older generation.
I'm a great admirer of singers such as Nina Simone, Linda Ronstadt, Suzi Quatro, Christine Perfect, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman etc, etc.
They all not only have great voices but also real musical talent.
And they also don't stand and sing in their knickers
So what is it with people like Beyonce and Rhianna? If they really are talented why do they need to sing in their knickers? Why do they need to use sex to sell their songs? They are powerful enough not to bend to the industry pressure on them. Why not stand or fall on their talents rather than on selling their sexuality.?

You have no idea what I've done in and out of jeans, darlin' !

Actually, fascinating things come up on the interwebs if you google "jeans that you can do the splits in" . . . And to be honest, splits weren't specified in the original posting, merely "dancing around." I object to the idea that you can't dance around in jeans. Precision in terminology is everything! (See my user name.)

I am going to go out on a limb and say however you manage to throw yourself around, it doesn’t have the same aesthetic and athletic prowess as Beyoncé’s dancing does. Whatever you manage to accomplish is irrelevant.

Arrggghhhhhh · 19/02/2025 17:32

Suzi Quattro used to wear skin tight black leather top and bottoms and a deep plunge neckline with a vast cleavage.

No she didn’t. I’ve googled her 70s images and can’t find a single image of her with a huge cleavage on display.

That’s it’s empowering to be the headline act of a sell out arena tour, and that women who are the headline act of a sell out arena tour are not comparable to Bianca Censori. The two have nothing to do with each other.

I’m talking about people who claim women wearing skimpy outfits if a kind that their male counterparts tend never to wear is empowering. The end result of continuing to push the boundaries of what is acceptable to wear is Bianca Censori.
And yes, it’s is women that these conversations are always about because they are the ones pushed and celebrated to wear as little as possible.

peudhrk · 19/02/2025 19:08

@JHound I have such a soft spot for her, I know she's very sexualised...but it feels like it's for women rather than men, if that makes sense?! I feel like she celebrates the female form rather than tries to attract men with it. But I'm probably just being a bad feminist Grin

Yep - apparently we are “bad feminists” if we have no issue with a women wearing danceable attire!

I agree with you. Beyonce reminds me of Dita Von Teese in that their display of their sexuality is aimed at women, not men.

Bernadinetta · 19/02/2025 19:13

OP, more comparable modern performing artists to the older artists that you mentioned (ie not dancers, so don’t need to wear dance costumes) could be Billie Eilish and Gracie Abrams?

JHound · 19/02/2025 19:13

Ddakji · 19/02/2025 19:07

Lots of people have mentioned empowerment, both on this thread and of any discussion about this issue.

Interesting that men don’t tend to dress in this kind of thing to enable their performance. Sure, traditional male ballet dancers wear pretty revealing tights, but you can’t compare what male and female gymnasts wear, nor with most pop.

I listen to a lot of K-Pop. Both girl and boy groups do a lot of performance and dance routines. The men never wear skimpy stuff, ever. Still manage to pull off endless impressive dance-based performances.

Who has mentioned empowerment on this thread?

Cjagwt · 19/02/2025 19:14

JHound · 19/02/2025 17:36

Who cares - their body, their choice. Some women like showing off their bodies.

Usher always gets his chest out. Maroon 5 main guy was topless for his entire performance at the superbowl.

Yet neither faced criticism.

Also why are you mentioning Rihanna? She has not performed in years properly and her one ofd superbowl show she wore a head to toe red jumpsuit.

It looks tacky and it's an ick. Same reason we don't like seeing men sagging.

JHound · 19/02/2025 19:15

Screamingabdabz · 19/02/2025 19:05

Of course sex sells. It’s a patriarchy. And we absorb its values so much we come out with shit like ‘her body her choice’.

Yeah the colour of the sequin thong she wears on her body is her choice but the mysognistic market of her particular music genre drive everything else.

Thankfully we still have the (relatively modest dressed by comparison) goddess Taylor Swift whose lyrics include ‘…fuck the patriarchy…’

What “misogynistic genre” of music are Rihanna and Beyonce making? Pop music?

Is it just women of colour you'd like to cover up, OP? Confused

Well exactly!

Someone like Sabrina Carpenter actually does sing in knickers (it doesn't bother me) but to pick on Rihanna (who doesn't really do music any more) and Beyoncé seems very odd

but Male singesr do. In the 1970s My sister had a poster of Rod Stewart , wearing pink skin tight shiny disco pants and a crop top and turning to look at camera over his own arse. Freddy Mercury wore cut to the crotch silver lame cat suits, these days you have Nick Jonas showing his butt crack pants right down at the front.

NeelyOHara1 · 19/02/2025 19:17

It is possible to look sexy and classy, which doesn't necessitate performing in your scanties 👗🙃.

Beyoncé makes Jay Z tour with her and regularly admonishes him in her songs for cheating on her, doesn’t she? It would often seem quite outwardly feminist.

shvenwe · 19/02/2025 19:17

It really hacks me off that singers are oversexualised when their main financial target is young kids

I have heard some interviews where it is hinted that this is required by the music industry, which is deplorable. But then again, targeting young people with totally inappropriate things appears to be happening everywhere, films, books, video games. The only way to stop it is to make it illegal. Which I personally think would be an excellent idea.

Along with making porn or sexualised humans on view anywhere children can see it illegal - this includes top shelf by the way - 10 year olds can see the top shelf.

And banning lyrics which are not for children

user1471453601 · 19/02/2025 19:17

@Thelasthurdle you're not their target audience. Neither am i. It's no big deal, let them do what they want without criticism., As long as it's what THEY want. Women, in general, get a bucket load of criticism without other women contributing.

I can compare what male and female gymnasts wear to dance productions.

Not men male pop acts currently put on the style of dance productions that Beyonce does but some of the ones who do (like Usher) tend to be topless and Beyonce’s male dancers tend to be topless too. She generally is covered up on her top half with her legs out. Basically a gymnasts leotard with thick tights when dancing.

I think Jay-Z and Beyonce have only toured with each other once. I think she only did the one album about him cheating.

Freddie Mercury should really have worn a nice, freshly ironed shirt and a tank top knitted by his Mummy. I can't even mention the trousers.

Likewise, W. Axl Rose would have looked much better in a pair of beige chinos and a navy blue blazer. Whatever possesed Slash with that hat is anybody's guess.

My friend's dad turned the tv off when we were watching TOTP and Freddie was wearing the leotard 😂😂😂🫣

RaveToTheGrave1 · 19/02/2025 19:20

But they always have been, I used to get the magazine Supersonic in the 1970s I remember pictures of abba nearly naked, David Essex shirt open lying down gazing at camera. I’m 60 now I’m fine.

I haven’t seen any top shelf magazines in years (thankfully). I sometimes think if I had girls, rather than boys, I would dread taking them to a concert as some seem so inappropriate for youngsters.

There is nothing particularly feminist or non feminist about wanting to work one one’s marriage for “better and for worse”.

Well you’re not her audience. Her audience enjoy her performances.
