Women singers singing in their knickers.

I admit I'm older generation.
I'm a great admirer of singers such as Nina Simone, Linda Ronstadt, Suzi Quatro, Christine Perfect, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman etc, etc.
They all not only have great voices but also real musical talent.
And they also don't stand and sing in their knickers
So what is it with people like Beyonce and Rhianna? If they really are talented why do they need to sing in their knickers? Why do they need to use sex to sell their songs? They are powerful enough not to bend to the industry pressure on them. Why not stand or fall on their talents rather than on selling their sexuality.?

I don't actually hold much respect for the music industry and I think the way it treats women is well known.
If the industry lauds her then fair enough.
I don't know her music to comment on it. I can only judge her by her presentation in the media and I certainly haven't seen anything on the way the media presents her to admire her.

How can you possibly judge anyone’s media image when it appears you haven’t even bothered to Google her?

MrsPeregrine · 19/02/2025 20:39

Before long they will all be singing completely naked at this rate. I think it’s just another sign of society sinking lower and lower. I feel sorry for future generations.

Classy always starts with someone stick thin and white.

god forbid you have boobs a bum and rhythm and automatically everything becomes sexualised. It’s so boring.

taylor swift wears no more clothes than any other pop star. But cos she straight up and down no one even notices.

There is a tendency (and it’s a particular expression of misogynoir) to oversexualise Black women’s bodies.

It’a why Beyonce in a leotard and Rihanna in a boiler suit is seen as more sexualised than Swift in hot pants.

I don’t watch modern movies anymore (a lot of that is to with how dull the colouration is nowadays) but yes I am bored stupid with gratuitous sex and nudity , whether it be male or female.

Once you start to notice it, it's everywhere and it ruins most modern films, shows and even advertisements.
The documentary Brainwashed: Sex - Camera - Power affirmed what I was struggling with when trying to enjoy films and has made me question how my mind has been shaped at a vulnerable age.

The inclusion of more male nudity in response is meant to be an effort to balance the previous imbalance. I see it as a thinly veiled continuation of the pressure as it increases the need for female actors to comply as the male actors don't have an issue with it.

What am I googling her for?

She thought posting pictures of herself naked, or near naked, when she was pregnant was a good selling point for her image . That's enough for me to know how much talent she has or hasn't. Why would someone with real musical talent need to do that?

OP if you’re outraged by women singing in their knickers look on YouTube and find the video of Cher performing If I Could Turn Back Time aboard USS Missouri. And ‘riding’ the guns !! That was 1989, so it’s nothing new.

That is such a joke. And cannot be refuted without making a series of inane statements as you have already done.

I do remember back in the 80s when Hazel O'connor sang on TOTP wearing a black bra and feeling shocked that she was allowed to do that.

Yes I remember that!

Doesn't Kate Middleton dress the way she does because she's required to? I have seen plenty of pictures of her prior to marrying William where she was not dressed quite so conservatively.

So your whole understanding of Beyoncé is a pregnancy photo and recognition of one song, and that was enough of an understanding to start a thread about how they should/ could resist the music industry, how they are bad role models, how you dislike their image?

At the very least it’s a spectacular display of a lack of self awareness and an overestimation of yourself.

Maybe some women just have no issue with performers choosing to wear production attire that may or may not be revealing.

It’s not just about the clothes though. Some of the positions these women get themselves in to is really a bit much. The one and only time I've seen Sabrina Carpenter sing she squatted down, opened her legs and gave a full view of her crotch (thankfully just about clothed in teeny shorts) . The comments section was full of sniggering about ‘camel’s toe’.

SummaLuvin · 19/02/2025 20:52

Sorry OP, but you say don’t know Beyoncé’s music enough to comment on it, you seemingly are unaware that Rhianna has been on a pretty much decade long hiatus, and have never heard of Sabrina Carpenter. You clearly are not a fan of pop music, especially women in pop, so why do you think it’s up to you to say how it should be done? Kindly, it’s not for you. I don’t like football, but I don’t take it upon myself to wade in and tell them what formation I think is best.

Yes I remember some of the things Cher did.
I must admit I was quite non plussed because she had a fantastic voice and was so beautiful so I never understood some of the outfits she chose to wear or the surgery she had done to her body.
It was so unnecessary.

'Whyowhyowhy doesn't Beyonce dress more like our lovely Princess Kate?'

Fuck me, I've read some daft shit on MN over the years but this...

Exactly this. It’s so boring. I once got pulled up at work for my (below the knee) skirt being too “revealing”. I had to point out that a skinny white woman was wearing the exact same skirt as me, she just didn’t have the curves to fill it like I did. Cue my manager going bright pink and mumbling something about not having noticed. I wonder why!

ShapedLikeAPastry · 19/02/2025 20:58

Why do you need to understand it?

And, interestingly, you clearly didn't think that Cher's choice of outfit negated her talent, so the question remains - why do you think wearing a sparkly leotard equals 'talentless' when it's Beyonce we're talking about?

I will be there in June too - I have my cowboy boots ready!

@LucyMonth absolutely nails it with her post. Please read it OP!

Acheyelbows · 19/02/2025 21:02

Think about why you're attacking the Op, she doesn't know your favourite singers or every current celebrity but is pointing out that women everywhere are encouraged to wear very little clothing or revealing 'sexy' outfits to market themselves to the masses.

Leotards are unnecessary today, the choreography and show will be just as enjoyable in different clothing. The fact that older singers wore less at one time does not make it a good thing that women and some men still decide or choose to do it.

They have agency but are guided by managers and popular trends to sell their music. We could hope that the more successful singers could lead the way on this.

Beekeepingmum · 19/02/2025 21:02

It just the patriarchy isn't it? The industry is run by men, these men have persuaded the performers and the world that performing in their underwear is "empowering" for them.

BunnyLake · 19/02/2025 21:02

I didn’t like those outfits of Cher’s even then so it’s not as if I was fine with them in the 90s and stiff and starchy about them now.

My favourite type of singers are people like Sade and Joan Armatrading and I adore BTS (even at my age), and another male Korean singer (that no one on has probably heard of except maybe Ddakji). I can’t get in to the brains of today’s young women though so I just like what I like and watch and listen to them. My sons are into male bands like Slipknot and Incubus so we don’t have much in the way of pop on anyway.

Maybe you just frequent some nasty corners of the internet? Everything I see about Sabrina is about how stupid Barry Keoghan must have been, how great her voice is and how much people love the recent old Hollywood aesthetic.

Can you provide the video you saw?

Ah, Slipknot. I’m not sure that men who vomit into the masks they’re wearing on stage and carry on performing are much better examples of human beings than women in their pants…

Well actually I did think less of Cher because of her choices regarding costumes and surgery.
I'm sure that is totally politically incorrect but I felt she totally undermined and trivialised her own talent.
Atm I'm feeling more forgiving of her because having recently heard her on Desert island Discs came over so well that I can overlook the disappointment I felt in her then.

She acts out sex positions in every show doesn't she? When she sings Juno.

No it was a stage performance.

No of course not, I’ve no idea what performance it was. I’m pretty sure it was daylight though so just a performance during the day on a stage outside, a festival perhaps? What on earth makes you think Sabrina is performing in some nasty corners of the internet?
