I never thought I'd see the US aligning with Russia

The US appear under Trump to be aligning with Putin and Russia more and more.

What was until recently referred to as our greatest allie is moving close to Russia in many ways, carving up Ukraine for Russia, trade deals with Russia.

It's bizarre.

Aibu to think it's bizarre or was this always coming when trump was elected?

You honestly haven't seen the links, even though Trump was previously in office? Or that Russia paid for Brexit propaganda and has links to far right parties in almost every country?
Someone wasn't paying attention for the last decade.

Catpuss66 · 19/02/2025 12:43

Always said this was going on, Farage was openly in league with Trump, surprised about Boris & Suella Baverman they kept that secret. The other one was piers Morgan AH.
I never understand Americans that supported him normal educated everyday people. He openly talks bullshit & they believe him I just don’t get it.

Letstheriveranswer · 19/02/2025 12:44

It's extraordinary how quickly the narrative around Ukraine is being changed now to paint them as being the obstacle to peace who needs sidelining.

I never thought the Ukrainian government had been snow white in events in the years leading up to the war, but the fact remains Russia invaded and now Ukraine are being painted as somehow being awkward because they didn't agree to be invaded and have their territory stolen?

Like I said it stops people looking too closely at NATO.

Letstheriveranswer · 19/02/2025 12:45

It's all a bit George Orwell 1984-ish.
Countries being painted as enemies, then suddenly a different country is announced to be the enemy and the narrative is rewritten

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/02/2025 12:37

My understand is that to change the actual constitution including the 4 year rule you need two thirds of both houses to agree. It doesn’t look likely that the republicans can get two thirds of the seats in both houses. At least not anytime soon.

My understanding is that you do not attempt to overthrow a democratic election by violence - apparently Trump doesn't agree with me. What on earth makes you think that he would play by the rules? He literally has an armed MAGA army behind him. Or did you think that all those right wing people with guns have armed themselves to go shooting ducks?

That has always happened.

Ukraine couldn't outright join NATO because they were severely compromised by both internal and international corruption and by the type of fighters they were using on the border.

That's incorrect. Ukraine was pro Russia until relatively recently. When it showed signs of wanting to move closer to Europe, Russia took Crimea.

NDerbys32 · 19/02/2025 12:50

His previous term showed who he is
Jan 6th cemented it
He's a Russian asset. A useful idiot who's been played for years. Now it's MAGA and the GOP who are the useful idiots, now dangerous.
Russia is now reaping what they sowed.
Nothing should have been a surprise

Goldengamer · 19/02/2025 12:53

Where does Trump stop? The US seems hellbent on taking everyone and everything over and has been trying for years. This is probably a post for another Topic but just an example , my DH and me were talking about how much American stuff is in our TV/Social media etc etc …. You go to look up something on YouTube and guarantee most are American . Makes me wonder if it’s the same in Countries like Germany/France/Spain . It annoys me when researching something I bought or looking for advice , the majority of Posts are American .
Don’t get me wrong , I’m not racist in the least and I have American relatives who I’ve visited on many occasions . But to me Americans are totally different to us apart from speaking English and that’s questionable 😉they have a completely different lifestyle. Are we all to become Americanised?

maximalistmaximus · 19/02/2025 12:55

Not bizarre at all.

They fought on the same side in both world wars.

Russia & USA have much more in common with each other than most of the rest of the world!

NewHeaven · 19/02/2025 12:59

Trump is a big admirer of Putin, always has been so it's not a new thing nor shouldit be a surprise.

He likes to carve up smaller countries like Ukraine & Palestine and dish them out to his mates to make ££ off the back of them.

YANBU @VolcanoJapan. The lies are coming thick and fast.

I'm not sure Trump will last 4 years. There are multiple protests in the US. Much of what he is trying to do is illegal or dangerous. Trump voter regret is spreading quicker than Covid.🙈

A bit like Starmer voter regret....

@Clearinguptheclutter is likely closer on this

is it though? my impression is that he's doing exactly what he said he would.I think the MAGA crowd is delighted.

He did not “smash the polls”.

He won. But it was as close as ever and he did not get over 50%.

We won a hell of a lot more seats that anyone would have thought. He won more swing states than anyone could have imagined so it was a big win whether you agree or not.

Not as big a 'win' as Putin got when he realised how malleable Trump was and started to use him.

And everyone who voted for Trump is now complicit in the world damage done, including to the former reputation of the US.

unsync · 19/02/2025 13:24

I said on one of the other threads that Russia's investment in the US elections has worked well for them. Trump is nothing but a puppet for Putin. They already succeeded in destabilising the EU with their input into the whole Brexit saga, and now this. All those people that support Farage and Reform should take note.

If I lived in any of those old Eastern bloc countries bordering Russia, I would be feeling distinctly uneasy watching recent events unfolding.

DomPom47 · 19/02/2025 13:25

Not surprising in the least bit. Both leaders want a weak NATO and EU - having closer ties with Putin and Russia will shift power dynamics globally. They’re both nationalist - so their political ideology are aligned. They are both dictators in my opinion - Putin with a D and Trump for now with a d. They undermine democratic institutions and want to suppress any opposition.

Can’t disagree with you. It’s a mess that’s for sure!

For the Ukraine invasion, he's attempting to change the history saying Ukraine started it.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c62e2158mkpt

In all fairness this narrative was around since the beginning of the war. It just wasn't the widely reported one. Plus there's a long standing history of conflict in the region that most of us don't really know or understand.

Much though I absolutely do NOT support Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I can see that from their point of view Ukraine joining EU and NATO was something that felt like a threat to Russia.

There's a law to declaring war and Russia have not followed it. 'Feeling threatened' doesn't provide jus ad bellum and it's incorrect to say that Ukraine's actions provide any kind of justification.

I very much agree with you. The only point I was making was that trump's narrative isn't a newly thought up one.

Returni · 19/02/2025 13:35

But it seems they do have special rights. I just read that they told Romania to give Andrew Tate and his brother their passports back and release them. These are rapists.

Echobelly · 19/02/2025 13:37

It's pretty clear to me that Trump sees himself and Putin as two tough no-nonsense guys who can work together. While Putin is laughing his arse off at having helped elect such an easily manipulative simpleton, twice, with nothing fancier than bot farms. Who will destroy America for him, while handing him the keys to being a real threat to Europe again.

I don't think Trump has made any deals, or is being blackmailed or anything. He's just too fucking stupid to recognise he is being played and it makes him feel important to have feel like he, Donald J Trump, has tamed the Russian bear that was the boogeyman of his childhood, through his clever 'deal making'.

bombastix · 19/02/2025 13:38

Lyn397 · 19/02/2025 12:33

They've got a lot in common - they're both narcissistic megalomaniacs.

This, and Russia needs money.

They both hate the EU too, so that's them stuffed for good. Once Putin gets some more Putin friendly governments and political parties in the EU then the whole thing is screwed.
