I never thought I'd see the US aligning with Russia

The US appear under Trump to be aligning with Putin and Russia more and more.

What was until recently referred to as our greatest allie is moving close to Russia in many ways, carving up Ukraine for Russia, trade deals with Russia.

It's bizarre.

Aibu to think it's bizarre or was this always coming when trump was elected?

He was clearly under Putin’s influence during his first term so this shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone. Those who voted for it could and should have known what they were voting for.

But populism. Alas.

It's been like watching a slow car crash but this was spelled out very clearly by Trump before the election. He said he admired dictators - I'm surprised people are surprised.

... And you see folks rushing to defend his unofficial VP Musk doing an actual Nazi salute (3 times) because he was just enthusiastic.

It’s where each administration sees their priorities. As Trump has stated, he wants to concentrate on threats he views more serious to the US. He’s putting his county first regardless of whether people agree/disagree, he’s given his reasoning.

Trump imo is a narcissist, as is Putin. Both power hungry old men that want to be respected by their ‘people’. Some will adore them some will hate them.

It’s like a game of keep your friends close but your enemies closer. I do agree that this war won’t end without some kind of outside intervention and talks.

His “reasoning” is a fictional account of how the conflict started that seems to have been written by the Kremlin. I don’t think it’s normal service in terms of a new government setting out its priorities and the sooner we recognise that, the sooner we can stop it happening elsewhere.

It's awful. Two mad men in charge of very powerful nations.

You mean three mad men. I present to you President Musk
I honestly don’t what to say anymore . I am so confused

Unsurprising. It’s Bro Culture. It’s not so much the US aligning with Russia as Trump aligning with Putin. They are both similar and like “strong man - beats chest” politics.

Bros sticking together.

JHound · 19/02/2025 11:27

Also I am confused by people who are confused by this. He was exactly like this with Putin in his first term too.

It’s this narrative that he’s putting his “country first” thats part of the problem. He isn’t .. he’s feeding the interests of a tiny minority, who will use this as a platform to get richer.

His country includes Black People, Hispanics, Sick People, Women, Native Americans, Farmers .. and multiple others, who are being chucked under a bus.

@bigvig you might not support trump, but you certainly name call like him.

It's been fascinating watching how this has been handled by the far right. An awful amount of time has been spent laughing at people who have pointed out what they're doing. It's been gaslighting on a grand scale.

The same thing happened during Brexit. Experts were ridiculed. Facts were ridiculed as project fear.

With the far right, they're desperately distancing themselves from fascism, going so far as to call the left fascist and saying that it no longer has any meaning.

They're sanitising their views and saying that they're only reasonable and rational and it's what the majority think. The Overton window has moved so far right that far right language is becoming mainstream.

"I'm not far right! I just want an ethnostate, remigration and to prevent the great replacement!"

Lampzade · 19/02/2025 11:32

Many Americans are unhappy about having to send financial aid to Ukraine .
I was in the US and was shocked by how many Americans ( of all races) disliked Zelenskyy and referred to him as a ‘beggar’.

Porcuporpoise · 19/02/2025 11:33

On the subject of Ukraine their interests align: neither of them wants the US to spend money defending it.

That doesn't mean that either the Ukrainians or the Europeans have to stop though. That's our choice to make.

All US citizens get a vote. Trump wasn't just elected by rich white men.

IVFmumoftwo · 19/02/2025 11:34

I think the dementia we suspected is beginning to more obvious.

UninterestingFirstPost · 19/02/2025 11:35

A marginal win in an election isn’t insane popularity. However, Trump regret isn’t yet at a level that reflects any understanding of what is happening to the country.
If the deleted poster thinks this is normal international relations they are not as informed or intelligent as they believe themselves to be.

He was voted in democratically though because people liked his policies. He smashed the polls.

Not sure what you’re getting at with your last sentence about people being thrown under a bus.

I think one of the important things to hold onto about how he's spinning the origins of the conflict is that he's completely written out the USA's and NATO's pivotal roles in making Ukraine a target for Putin. The Ukrainian administration made serious errors of judgement - they pissed NATO around, collaborating with them, compromising them then letting them in, failing to tidy up etc - but this was all done in the context of public promises re future membership and who knows what allusions made in private.

To hear Trump talk now, you would think that Ukraine just upped and decided to piss Russia off all on their own, with no USA/NATO involvement.

But, this is standard behaviour from "the world's policeman".

His voters are becoming more aware of that by the day as the popular policies they voted for have become a destructive, dangerous, expensive mess.

But even I'm surprised at how quickly and rapidly Trump voter regret has hit.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 19/02/2025 11:44

It will be interesting to see how far this is going to divide Europe.

At the moment it looks like a united front, but the cracks are showing.
The results of the German election and subsequent policies will be a good starting point for observations of what is to come.

Europe has been relatively stable over the last 80 years, I believe this is going to change. Trump & Putin will play a big part in this.

Super powers led by dictators carving the world up into spheres of influence. Classic fascist dictator playbook.

Genuine question: where are you seeing this regret? I'm hearing plenty from Democrats but the Trump voters all seem as happy as pigs in shit.
