Really stupid holiday question

I’m asking a really stupid question but I’ve asked a few people IRL and not had helpful answers.

I’m taking my boys abroad for the first time this year - Spain / Balearic Islands most likely. Probably in June.

Stupid Question: Are the pools warm at that time of year? I’ve not been to Europe much and when I did years ago it was April, Portugal, and the pool was absolutely massive so like an iceberg.

We’re looking an at AI place - Holiday Village or similar. The pools won’t be freezing will they?

I feel like an idiot asking but my boys both have additional needs and a cold pool will be a nightmare as they would find that tricky.

You need to check with the place you’re staying. Some will be heated and some won’t.

custardlover · 17/02/2025 19:10

Entirely depends on the place - email them and ask if the pool is heated?

Merryoldgoat · 17/02/2025 19:11

See? I didn’t even know they MIGHT be heated.

Feeling even more stupid now 🙈

A lot of places rely on the sun to warm the pools so it really depends on the temperature of where you are going and how long it has been that temperature for iyswim?
We went to turkey a few years ago in October, because it was mid 20's the outdoor pools were freezing, the 'heated' indoor pool wasn't much better.

66babe · 17/02/2025 19:13

I think all pools at all times of year are cold .. until you get in , then it's ok
I've only found a few heated pools and couldn't really tell lol

MidlifeStruggles · 17/02/2025 19:13

We went to Majorca end of May/beginning of June. The weather was nice but the pools were Baltic! I went in once. We now go in August!

DecafDodger · 17/02/2025 19:13

April is a different matter but you won't need a heated pool in June in Spain.

mitogoshigg · 17/02/2025 19:14

Pools are not heated to anywhere near as warm as I would like! I'm being honest here, my idea of perfect pool temperature is a hot bath though!

Check the details carefully, typically only the main family/activity pool is given any heat, BUT if it's warm enough the sun will be heating the water. My advice is to consider rash vests for starters

AlphaApple · 17/02/2025 19:15

In June the Balearic islands will average 26 degrees. I expect pools will be a little cooler than that which will be a couple of degrees cooler than a typical indoor pool in the UK. So refreshing rather than bath-like, but nicer for it as you will be warm from the sunshine!

April is a different matter but you won't need a heated pool in June in Spain.

I go to Marbella with temperatures of 30+ and the pool is always cold.

MadeForThis · 17/02/2025 19:18

It should just feel nippy when you first get in but then you'll warm up. It's only really in August that it can feel like getting into a bathtub.

mynameiscalypso · 17/02/2025 19:18

We're going to the South of France in the first week of June and the expectation is that we'll need the heating on in the pool.

xyz111 · 17/02/2025 19:20

We went to Lanzarote in June and the pools were freezing. Kids didn't care though!

xyz111 · 17/02/2025 19:21

Also been to Turkey when it was 41c and the pools were still cold!

Dueanamechange2025 · 17/02/2025 19:21

We did Majorca in June a couple of years ago. The pools were warm enough to use but still a shock when you get in.

Merryoldgoat · 17/02/2025 19:21

Ok. Thank you everyone. This is helpful. Now to find a decent hotel!

Portugal last summer in August, pool was really chilly! To be fair none of us cared once in but it was surprising to us.

FairyBatman · 17/02/2025 19:24

In the Balearics in June I'd say on the cool side unless it's either heated or it's been really warm and sunny.

Merryoldgoat · 17/02/2025 19:33

Maybe I’ll look at Turkey - the flight puts me off a touch but it might be worth it once out there…

We went to Menorca last May. The main pool was freezing. The toddler pool was only slightly better🥶.

cestlavielife · 17/02/2025 19:40

Take rash vests or shortie wetsuits eg decathlon

Nameychangington · 17/02/2025 19:41

Even year round destinations eg Canaries which have heated pools will have turned the heating off by June so read the small print!

My experience of Spanish holidays goes: April in Ibiza - outdoor pools were so cold they were unusable. May in Lanzarote - 'heated' pool brisk but ok once in, then they turned the heating off half way through the week and the sea was warmer than the pool. August in Ibiza - unheated pools warmed by the sun felt lovely and warm. October in Menorca - pool too cold, sea still warm enough to swim in.

Edited, posted too soon

DaringLion · 17/02/2025 19:43

End of June is nice and warm in the Balearics

Lovelynames123 · 17/02/2025 19:44

The pools in Turkey are also freezing, been in April, May, August and October. But when it's red hot you enjoy the cold, and soon get used to it! I'm off to Lanzarote on Friday, the pools will be freezing cold but it won't stop my dc!

NotMuchOfABargain · 17/02/2025 19:47

In my view, all hotel pools are cold all year round! The main difference is if the outside temperature is very hot then it has less of an impact as you can come out and warm up quickly.
