To be fucked off the neighbours use my drive constantly

crappymeal · 17/02/2025 16:13

My drive is big enough for about 3 cars if they squeeze on. We have a car which normally gets blocked in by the neighbours who use ours without asking.

It also means if we have visitors, they don't have anywhere to park and they have to find somewhere up the street although the roads are skinny and it's a bit of a nightmare (and I guess that's why they won't do it).

They usually get about 5 visitors a day and don't ask if they can use it first.

I wouldn't mind every now and then (which I have said before) but it's almost every day now and I think they're taking the piss.

I've tried speaking to them and they have said that the visitors don't stay for long so it doesn't matter?

I will diagram it when I have a pen and paper.

I'm really bad at explaining. My drive goes down the side of my house (where I normally park) and then across the front of my house (where they normally park). I could park my car in one of the spaces where they would block me in but there would still be enough room for one of them to park next to me so it wouldn't solve the problem completely. I doubt that makes much sense so give me a bit of time and I will upload.

Do they not have their own drive?

gardenflowergirl · 18/02/2025 19:18

Just park your car at the end of your driveway so no car can fit behind yours.

Khayker · 18/02/2025 19:45

Cheaper way to do it may be the poles that anchor into the driveway and retract when you unlock them. Like retractable bollards, cant think what theyre called sorry but i see lots of people using them. If they start blocking your driveway by parking across it on the road, speak to the police and local council. One of them will deal with blocked driveways. The antisocial behaviour team at your local authority has a huge amount of powers they can use if they start parking across your driveway once a psysical barrier is in place.. Best of luck.

Jux · 18/02/2025 19:54

And how dare someone who doesn't even live next door ignore your request to move their car from YOUR drive?? I'd have beenr ound there immediately tell ing them it gets moved now or all permissionns (perceived) are revoked from immediate effect and if any of their visitors are that rude to you again you will involve the law.

Then I'd go and get big pots and big plants and lots of compost and spend the next time I see a car parked in my drive I'd block them in by setting up on my drive and doing a load of planting up. If asked to make room for them to leave now I'd say OK sure, but sdtay put for at least another half hour.

And as we speak a 'friend' of theirs has turned up and parked on the drive, brilliant!! I went out and asked them to move the car but they haven't. They just looked at me and went inside the neighbours. I know this isn't the end of the world but for fuck sake!! I'm looking at fencing now.

Could you park on their drive? Do they have one? Then when they ask you to move go “Yeah, in a minute” and then just leave it there for half an hour?

LilySLE · 18/02/2025 20:55

5 visitors a day is very unusual, especially if they don’t stay for long. It does suggest the neighbour may be running some sort of business. Running a business from home can require all sorts of things from planning permission (precisely because of these sorts of parking issues!); to specialist buildings insurance (normal home insurance unlikely to permit this and may be invalidated); to paying business rates instead of / as well as council tax; and can potentially be a breach of covenant (especially if houses on a new build estate), which you may potentially have a right to enforce. Have you tried looking on Google maps to see if there is a business pinned to that address, or googling the neighbour’s name or their address to see if a business comes up?

I think that's going to be our only option but just think it's rude to do this.

They are blocking you in and you think this would be rude,? What's wrong you are such a pushover?

pollymere · 18/02/2025 21:01

I think fence is decidedly the way forward. And maybe a sign that says All Unauthorized Cars will be Towed.

Someone on MN the other day had the police tow a car after calling 111.

It is not rude to take measures to stop people trespassing on your property. Sometimes you have to resort to preventative action when thoughtless/entitled people won't be told.

Do you know any large powerlifters in your area who fancy a bit of strongman training, such as car flipping?

Do they not have their own drive?

It sounds like it is visitors to the neighbour that are parking on the OP's drive, not the neighbours themselves. If you have an estate where everyone has driveways but households have multiple adults who all must have their own car plus business vehicles (for example), there can be little space left for visitor's vehicles. It is getting a bit like that where I live at the end of a road because several neighbours have business vans and the laybys can be full of vehicles at times.

Fencehedge · 18/02/2025 22:23

It bemuses me when people keep posting needless advice / questions, because they haven't read all the OP's posts. OP left the thread over 24 hours ago after being insulted by someone (who also hadn't bothered to read all the OP's posts).

She has decided what to do.

It’s rude to park on your drive

They're right. Your neighbours are rude and entitled and you need to let them.know it won't be tolerated. They are just taking advantage and will continue to do so unless they are stopped.

Jux · 19/02/2025 02:18

Sounds like a dealerto me. Call the cops.

LittleBigHead · 19/02/2025 05:21

Penguin bollards.

Zonder · 19/02/2025 06:21

We still need a diagram! And you need to tell them your drive isn't available any more.

Suey1954 · 19/02/2025 08:32

In the UK if you do something constantly without being challenged for 12 years then it becomes your legal right. Put something in writing and hand it to them directly. Not thru the letterbox where they can say they never received it. Or make a sign up and laminate it saying 'Private property for land owners vehicle only, all other vehicles will be towed away.'. That's a warning. You are within your rights to have any other vehicles impounded.

Onlygetinvolvedwhenineedto · 19/02/2025 09:37

I think a bucket of very large nails accidentally dropped where they keep parking may stop them when they're having to replace their tyres every month!
Failing that, yes I agree with the gates. If you think it looks rude (and I can understand you not wanting to get into an argument with neighbours that you may have for many years to come) then just mention that you are getting a dog and doing in for safety reasons or some such excuse. Good luck x

sparklehorse24 · 19/02/2025 10:12

Keep us posted OP on the outcome, would be interested as I have a similar situation where we live!

Shade17 · 19/02/2025 12:16

Utter nonsense.

not "rather" they didn't use it, they are NOT to use it

Indeed. I was being polite - they're her neighbours after all. No need to be rude when you have to see them almost every day.

I don't find anything rude in saying "please do not" or "please stop"

Arrggghhhhhh · 19/02/2025 17:44

Cease and desist letter from a lawyer will do it,

Picklelily99 · 19/02/2025 18:26

Is it just me who still would like to see a diagram, just to see the space?

No, not just you.

As this is a parking thread and there is no diagram, I'm not surprised it hasn't had the interest that others have (where there was a diagram attached).
