To ask how to best handle this car blocking my drive?

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 14:07

I live near to a football stadium and the team are currently playing. Somebody has parked right across my drive and blocked me in. I assume they have gone the match.

You need a residents pass to park round here and it doesn't look like they have one. Looks like I'm trapped until they come back.

What's best to do? Can I report them to the council? Leave a note? Confront them upon their return. Or is all of that pointless?

I wanted to go to the supermarket which will likely be closed by the time they're back.

No, I referring to responses of posters egging OP on

Egging on? Or confirming OP is right in her action?

I find the people encouraging OP to be a complete doormat very irritating!

I have similar experience and called a cab to get to where I needed to go.
Massively inconvenient but a resolvable problem. If an emergency occurred, there is 999
My point is that reaction was disproportionate to the event IMO

Why should the OP have to go to the expense of calling a cab when she has her own, already paid-for means of transport sitting on her own driveway?

Londog · 17/02/2025 11:27

MonetWaterlilies · 17/02/2025 09:09

Why should she have to do this?

She completely shouldn’t !!! But it’s a solution to preserve her space . We live in an area where there are summer music festivals and the same thing happens, so this is what we do - folk are so very selfish 😡

Or, you could do what the OP did which is report the offence to the police. The car being towed and the offender having to pay to get it back is a thoroughly proportionate punishment and will dissuade him/her from doing the same thing in the future meaning that innocent people won’t have to be unconvinced, put to an unjust expense, or miss nhs appointments etc.

Call the police and mention how the vehicle is blocking you from accessing a highway. If they tell you that they can't do anything, and it's a civil matter so you need to contact the council, cite the following acts:

Section 103 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 states that “no person in charge of a motor vehicle or trailer may cause or permit the vehicle or trailer to stand on a road so as to cause any unnecessary obstruction of the road

and

Section 99 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 allows the Secretary of State to make regulations for removing vehicles that are illegally, dangerously, or obstructively parked. It also covers vehicles that are abandoned or broken down.

Police don't have to help if you can't get off a highway, but they should help if you're unable to join one. I hope it works.

Cancel the cheque tow truck 😂

diddl · 17/02/2025 11:47

This thread just keeps giving doesn't it?

Maybe MN should consider a banner stating "this thread was started Xhrs ago. Consider that things might have changed since Op's first post!"

Butchyrestingface · 17/02/2025 11:47

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 17:13

So a man about 50 by himself was just walking down the street talking on his phone very animated. He did stop briefly and then turned around. Could be the culprit but he didn't knock or anything.

I do actually feel slightly bad now. I never actually thought a tow truck would turn up if I'm honest!

I wouldn't feel bad.

That would keep me going for years. 😈

diddl · 17/02/2025 11:49

Cancel the cheque tow truck 😂

Well of course that's what the Op should have done when she realised that the shops would be closed before it got to her😉

That might have been helpful yesterday afternoon!

FFS. Why not RTFT?!

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH !

Not absolute rubbish in the slightest.
The police will facilitate the removal for a vehicle that is blocking your car from accessing the road, as can be seen from this thread.

They will not do it if the vehicle is blocking you accessing private property, like your drive.

CoffeeCup14 · 17/02/2025 12:41

Househunter2025 · 16/02/2025 21:50

Well how else are they supposed to unblock the drive unless they tow it? Of course they need to move it out of the way. And then where do they put it - outside someone else's driveway? And the truck has to be paid for so there needs to be a mechanism to force the car owner to pay. If they didn't want towing they should park in front of an empty drive

Absolutely all this. The consequences are exacerbated by it being a Sunday, and the assumption that the parker is an away fan. It's possible it was a very stupid panicked decision, and we've all made really bad decisions and regretted them when we experience the consequences. So I have a little sympathy if he's experiencing that regret. But if he's the kind of idiot who sails through life blaming everyone else for his 'misfortune', he absolutely deserves it.

All those people saying a waste of resources and she should have left it, let’s wait and see if you ever get your drive blocked in eh?? She did the right thing 100%!!! Good on her I say. People keep doing things like this thinking they can get away with it. Same with society in general! Too many do gooders about scared of punishing people for things they shouldn’t do. Hopefully the idiot now will think twice about blocking someone’s drive!!
I will also think twice about parking in a residential area near Anfield now when we watch dua lipa 🤣

Edited

I often had problems with my driveway being blocked. Seldom found myself blocked in, but often found myself blocked out, thus endangering my late husband - he had hemiparesis following a stroke. He had learned to walk again, with the use of a stick, but was wobbly.

I had to stop the car in the middle of the road, get my front door open, help DH get out and onto the pavement and pray that he didn't have an accident while I was driving the car round the block and circling to a parking space in front of the local store.

I have no sympathy for someone getting towed. Might teach them a lesson..

Wombatwilly78 · 17/02/2025 13:16

You did the right thing OP. If someone blocked my car in I wouldn't waste a minute ringing the police. A fire engine would just bump it out of the way in an emergency. Not that I have a fire engine.

Margorett · 17/02/2025 10:41

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH !

I phoned Police Scotland when access to my driveway was blocked. They sympathised, but said they could only help if I was blocked in. Yes, I did point out that the problem had left my disabled husband in danger.

Wombatwilly78 · 17/02/2025 13:19

Middlepiepush · 16/02/2025 17:06

I agree that it was a bit over the top to get it towed. I would have left a note on the car saying that it would be towed if left there again.
I would never block someone’s driveway myself though so it is very CF behaviour.

It isn't over the top by any means. It's totally illegal to do what he did in blocking her driveway. He deserved it. Wait till it happens to you!

Get a couple of traffic cones set up in front of your drive in future or on match days park across your own drive if you are in .

She shouldn't have to and your actually not allowed. Reminds me of the mother on Bread.🤣🤣🤣

Nope. In the first instance, the police/local council will normally act because the offence is blocking access to the highway. In the second instance if there is a dropped kerb in front of the property to allow access, they will act because it is an offence to park across a dropped kerb. I’ve done it a couple of times. I’m a wheelchair user and have arrived home several times to find vehicles parked across my driveway. A phone call to 101 and an explanation of the situation has resulted in the offending vehicle being towed. Since I had a plate mounted on the gatepost advising that the householder is disabled and if access is blocked the vehicle will be towed, I haven’t had a problem.

Londog · 17/02/2025 13:47

The thing is that all this informing the police and towing away 🛻 has to happen in the space of a 90 minute football match … 🤔

This is it for me on iOS app.

Everyone should screenshot this along with another one circling the “See all” link on the mobile site version, and just post every time anyone fails to read OP’s updates.

Great result OP.

I honestly couldn't care less what the rules are. Someone blocks my driveway, they're being reported, towed, or failing that, forcibly removed. It's NOT acceptable.

Londog · 17/02/2025 13:47

Well yes, because the club pays for the extra policing, traffic control and private tow trucks in the locality.
The tow truck will be on standby, probably already stalking the area ready to be called out, wardens will already be out and about ticketing.

Matchday parking is a huge issue across many grounds, my local one included, and even making surrounding roads permit only here does not stop people parking inconsiderately, blocking roads and driveways. Football clubs don't want to piss off their neighbours so they provide the funds to deal with it. It's a simple call to 101 followed by them passing it to the relevant parking teams on the day. It's a speedy process.

MillyVannily · 17/02/2025 13:57

For people saying it's waste of resources. Why? The person is breaking the rules by parking there and they should be fined or towed. Why not report them? And who can guarantee the lady wouldn't have needed her car, anything can happen, her car being blocked is not right.
Who knows ... this chap probably will think twice before blocking someone's drive next time so that's resources saved.🤣

The tow truck companies will be circling the area just waiting for calls from the police to take the car away so they can get the money off the owner for returning it. I'd be surprised if it took more than 20 minutes for a truck to turn up on an event day near a big stadium/venue.
