To ask how to best handle this car blocking my drive?

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 14:07

I live near to a football stadium and the team are currently playing. Somebody has parked right across my drive and blocked me in. I assume they have gone the match.

You need a residents pass to park round here and it doesn't look like they have one. Looks like I'm trapped until they come back.

What's best to do? Can I report them to the council? Leave a note? Confront them upon their return. Or is all of that pointless?

I wanted to go to the supermarket which will likely be closed by the time they're back.

I agree with you.
Alot of posters appeared to egg on the OP to contact police and seemingly got great pleasure out of the countdown to the tow truck arriving and the anticipation of the drivers reaction when finding out. I appreciate the huge inconvenience of not being able to use her car but I feel uncomfortable with the large number of responses who are seemingly gaining great pleasure out of the outcome.
Yes, the car driver and passengers were inconsiderate but no harm resulted from their thoughtless behaviour.
And OPs shopping can be sorted tomorrow

You have to be kidding. This is victim blaming at its finest.

CharlieUniformNovemberTangoYankee · 17/02/2025 00:24

So, instead of paying £20 for an actual car park, the arsehole dumped his car across the OP's dropped kerb driveway and now it'll cost him £160 to get it back. On Monday. Hahahahahahahahaha.

Seriously? So the OP isn't supposed to mind being stuck without use of her car for an afternoon. And now she has to somehow squeeze the shopping into an already busy workday because some inconsiderate fool parked illegally. Of course he should face the consequences of causing OP inconvenience and breaking the law.

itsgettingweird · 17/02/2025 04:31

Yes, the car driver and passengers were inconsiderate but no harm resulted from their thoughtless behaviour.

Doing illegal things shouldn't only be illegal and reported of "harm" occurs.

Otherwise where we do stop?

Only report when an accident happens and we need to leave the driveway to go to a and e?

Drink driving is only considered a problem if they harm someone?

I'm glad posters "egged on" the OP.

The more people who suffer consequences for their entitled behaviour the more change we have of society becoming a better place.

Yes, people got pleasure when, for once, a lawbreaker isn't getting away with breaking the law. For once, the good guys won.

Yet, that fact bothers you. Maybe, someday, you'll have someone blocking your car in, and you'll get a call to hurry to A&E/police station/school for a child, partner, parent etc. and you won't be able to get out. THEN you'll understand why it needs to be stopped BEFORE the above happens.

If you cannot get off your drive you can call the non emergency police number and they can get it towed. If you want to get onto your drive there's nothing you can do

This 100%

This is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. The thoughtless, entitled driver knowingly and illegally parked across someone’s drive, blocking them in, rather than pay for a car park.
Of course ‘harm’ resulted. What if there was an emergency or she really needed to leave in a hurry? Not gloating, but the car being towed by the police was an entirely proportionate response.
If everyone was able to address antisocial behavior like this, society would be a better place.
Maybe the xxxx won’t do it again and will learn a lesson.

Walkden · 17/02/2025 06:40

"I know what you mean, if they are away fans how will they get home, get to work tomorrow, get back to pick up the car and all the associated costs"

The person blocking the drive, parked in front of someone else's drive , would have seen the car parked there and knew they would be there for a few hours.

They literally gave zero fucks about the op and knew nothing about whether they would need to go to work, take people to hospital etc. it is the epitomy of entitled behaviour.

Hopefully having the car towed will make them reflect on the consequences and the level of inconvenience they willingly imposed on someone else.

Having said that a person entitled enough to block in a driveway is probably too narcissistic for that level of self reflection.

BreatheAndFocus · 17/02/2025 07:00

Good! I’m glad their car was towed away! It absolutely serves them right, and not only will they be unlikely to do it again, they’ll be telling all their footy friends who also won’t be doing it now.

I had someone block me in and I couldn’t get to a medical appointment. I was bloody fuming! The woman who did it and received my very blunt and very detailed opinion on her selfish, inconsiderate parking would probably have very much preferred to have her car towed! 🤣

MammaTo · 16/02/2025 21:24

Amazing! I live in anfield too and this has had me in stitches. I can picture some away fan walking back to his car thinking it’s been robbed (as per the stereotype) and then be even more delighted when he has to pay his fine to get the car back. Delightful!

No guarantee it’s an away fan. Don’t most Liverpool fans live down south?

Gasgirl25 · 17/02/2025 07:19

Sauvage · 16/02/2025 22:04

You are my absolute hero. I live on a street where this happens to me all the time. I have missed commitments and been stuck at home all because some selfish person chooses to block my drive. I never thought the police would be interested if I called. I will try that next time. I would love to see the look on the face when the car is gone!!!
I usually just have to hang around until they come back and shout at them!

My neighbour was blocked in by an office worker entirely parked across their drive (we have offices at end of our street and the staff often park quite inconsiderately, part hanging over drives, but never usually as badly as this ).

The police towed the car away very quickly after they were made aware of the issue. When the lady came back she told my neighbour she had been running late for work, hence parking like that. She had caused my neighbour to have to make alternative arrangements for a work meeting a 30 min drive away!

I spoke to the police at the time when they were loading the car. They don’t notify the owner the car has been towed , so the owner has to click on what has happened/ or rings the police to report the car stolen, when they then get informed what has happened to it. Oh and they also got a parking ticket!

Car got towed away.

At some point a random man was walking up and down street in an animated phonecall - may or may not have been the car owner.

OP shut her curtains and opened a bottle of red!

itsgettingweird · 17/02/2025 07:30

Oh - and then...... some MNers appeared trying to accuse OP of being the selfish one for having it towed 🙄

RedSuedePump · 17/02/2025 07:32

you don't even have to pay £20 to park btw! i was at the game yesterday and paid £10 to park at a school nearby - really well organised with parking attendants - they are open until an hour after the game. it's a 10min walk from Anfield - no excuse to park like a dick and cause problems for residents!

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 17/02/2025 07:49

JudgeJ · 16/02/2025 19:06

If there is parking on OP's road she could make money by letting out her drive for parking via a website, having parked her car out on the road long before the match, my daughter always does this when they go to places like Wembley.

But there's already a car park. I don't know whether it was already full or if he just wasn't willing to pay £20 to use it; but if the latter, he's probably not the sort to arrange parking ahead of time and pay.

To be fair, if he'd arrived earlier and found a legitimate space on OP's street that wasn't blocking somebody's drive, he would have been absolutely fine and could have parked completely free.

Your DD sounds like a sensible person who will responsibly make wise plans in advance - unlike matey here!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 16/02/2025 19:16

I imagine the driver has completely forgotten what your house looks like, seeing as they were so contemptuous to park on your drive so clearly they have no regard for your property. And as such probably have wandered around for a while looking for their car before perhaps the penny finally dropped!

Yes, I agree. People like that don't even deign to stop and consider others in the first place and just wander around as king of the world in their own heads.

It wouldn't have registered or even entered his head that he was blocking number 83's drive and that they'd better not complain about it; he just needed somewhere to leave his car and did so, because he is the only person who matters.

It's unacceptable enough when people block your drive when they'll 'only be five minutes'; but for an entire football match, that really does take selfishness to a whole new level.

No. Not aggressive. Just frustrated because people do this so often - can't be bothered to read the OP but assume that their own post will, somehow, impart words of wisdom that are completely different, and more insightful, than the hundreds of posters before them.

Yes, indeed. The irony is that people who do this usually cite the thread being 'too long' for them to possibly read it all before responding, apparently failing to appreciate that, if there weren't dozens of people like them repeating what an earlier PP already said (and they must know they can't be the first to think of that stinking obvious response), the thread would be much shorter - so they themselves are a large part of the problem.

So OP can simply change her plans, now that a stranger's illegal selfishness has prevented her from being able to use her day as she wants/needs to; but the stranger can't possibly make his plans to abide by the law when parking?

Why does only he matter?

I liked the massive sign that Everton fans held up at a local derby that said "LFC fans: welcome to Merseyside!" Grin

Richiewoo · 17/02/2025 08:23

If its blocking your drive. It's police issue.

Lovelysummerdays · 17/02/2025 08:27

I do wonder if the people telling OP off are also inconsiderate When they park. Local village can be a challenge as small and touristy. There is parked cars along one side double yellows on the other. The number of people who park on the yellow lines as just going to be 5 minutes is ridiculous. Don’t often see traffic wardens beyond mid afternoon but there were there after 5 ticketing all the cars.

It’s a gamble if you park this way. If you lose and get towed or a ticket. Then you should just suck it up.
