To ask how to best handle this car blocking my drive?

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 14:07

I live near to a football stadium and the team are currently playing. Somebody has parked right across my drive and blocked me in. I assume they have gone the match.

You need a residents pass to park round here and it doesn't look like they have one. Looks like I'm trapped until they come back.

What's best to do? Can I report them to the council? Leave a note? Confront them upon their return. Or is all of that pointless?

I wanted to go to the supermarket which will likely be closed by the time they're back.

The thing is, this level of shit parking occurs every single day near to schools. People park across driveways, in driveways, on the corner / junction, on the zig zag markings et c. Without a doubt they are entitled and selfish. They claim to be looking out for their kids but give no shits about everyone elses.

I would bet my house on the fact that some of those people are also Mumsnetters.

There needs to be wheel clamping in place for this / towing/ mega fines. Stamp it out. Fucking selfish dangerous behaviour all because they're too lazy to walk a few 100 yards

Doloresparton · 16/02/2025 17:27

If he can afford to watch Liverpool play then he can afford to pay for parking.

Of course. I have little sympathy

Quinlan · 16/02/2025 17:22

And it still makes money for the police force.

If is a money making side of it. They tow cars parked illegally, especially on a match day when they are prepared for it. Doesn’t matter if OP wanted to leave her house or not.

Not the police. The tow company make the money. Police do not tow vehicles.

Speeding fines also don’t go to the police. They go to local Government.

Whilst everyone else is happy to watch on with popcorn, the truth is no one here or on the neighbourhood group chat will protect you if things go south

You've obviously never been to Anfield my dear 😉

🤣

It makes me rage. Pavement parking, on the double yellows, over a dropped kerb, the zig zags FFS. It takes selfish to another level.

You have confirmed the stadium and where you live on this thread. You admit you lied to the police about needing to go out and care for your elderly mum. In reality you just wanted to get groceries for your lunch at work, and you didn’t do that in the end.

If the police knew the reality was that you’ll be chilling at home with wine, chances are they wouldn’t have got involved.

So whilst it’s cathartic having an inconsiderate driver being towed, it just comes across as a waste of resources. Now you’ll potentially have an angry or drunk group of football fans on your doorstep, potentially requiring further police intervention. Football fans generally aren’t the most reasonable people, their initial reaction will likely be worry or rage (ie was the car stolen?)

Whilst everyone else is happy to watch on with popcorn, the truth is no one here or on the neighbourhood group chat will protect you if things go south @Parkingdrama00

What waste of resources?

Copper on the front desk rings the tow-truck company that has their contract for picking up illegally parked vehicles, takes ten seconds to pass on an address and vehicle reg.

Wow. Huge waste of resources.

Oh you didn't think police officers go around driving recovery truck vehicles themselves did you?

Tricho · 16/02/2025 17:35

Parkingdrama00 · 16/02/2025 17:23

That's a load of nonsense. In reality the reasons I gave probably had no bearing on the car being towed as the guys who towed it said they tow cars all the time on match days.

As for drunk people knocking on my door I can pretty much guarantee they will be an out of town Liverpool fan as locals tend to have their parking arranged and Wolves supporters probably came on coaches etc. If they knock on a random door in Anfield causing trouble because they blocked a drive then it won't be me that's needs to be worried about it.

"Probsbly an out of town liverpool fan"

Evertonian by any chance OP? ;)

I’m on Merseyside. The police here absolutely would have got involved whatever OP said. It’s a match day and there is zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour. I’ve seen more CF parking on match days than you’ve probably had hot dinners, and it amazes me that people still risk it, because the likelihood is they’ll be fined or towed. It’s cheaper to use a car park or public transport. If the culprit comes a knockin’ OP can deny all knowledge. And if the culprit rings to report the car stolen he’ll likely be told it’s been towed and where he can collect it. He made a conscious decision to park the way he did, and for a considerable period of time. OP made a conscious decision not to let him get away with it. Hopefully it’ll be a good use of resources if he learns his lesson.

RitaFromTheRanch · 16/02/2025 17:36

Excellent result, they wont park there again will they?

BIWI · 16/02/2025 17:37

@CauseImMrDarkside 600 or so posts, before you plopped onto the thread with your words of wisdom. Did you not bother to think that things might have moved on?!

RTFT. Always.

ButIToldYouSoooo · 16/02/2025 17:37

@MJconfessions what rubbish. It's not a waste of police time. In fact it should be easier to get cars towed from blocking drives and parking on private drives in this country. So many piss takers who know nothing will happen to them 99% of the time. That needs to stop.

Hippee · 16/02/2025 17:38

Yes. Or at least the OPs updates. It's not hard.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/02/2025 17:39

I've lived in several smaller, older cities with big football clubs/several football clubs - illegal/inconsiderate parking is a massive problem on match days, particularly where you've got a fairly bad traffic system, lots of narrow streets etc. So they are absolutely on the ball about removing illegally parked/obstructively parked vehicles, and the only qualifier for removing them is that they are illegally/obstructively parked.

The OP could have told the police she fancied doing a strip tease on the road outside her house and they'd still have shifted it.

ChompandaGrazia · 16/02/2025 17:40

He most likely couldn’t remember exactly where he parked, just the street. I doubt he will knock on the door.

Justalittlehandhold · 16/02/2025 17:40

MJconfessions · 16/02/2025 17:16

The police thought OP was caring for her elderly mother which is why they acted. OP admits that was a lie.

Don’t be so ridiculous! They acted because OP was blocked in, the car was parked by a total selfish cunt!

OP doesn’t live in bloody Greendale 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!

Porcuporpoise · 16/02/2025 17:41

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 16/02/2025 14:11

What else do you think "this car is blocking my drive" means?! Confused

It can mean that they are stopping you getting onto your drive, or off it. The legal remedies available in each case differ - the police will tow the illegally parked vehicle away if it is stopping you getting off your drive.

Who cares! It is a selfish and deliberate act, and it seems to not bother you, so you probably haven't been personally inconvenienced by it yourself!
What if the resident was an A&E worker, or an Ambulance driver etc, who couldn't get to work.
We get it all the time by people parking on the double yellow lines across the alley to our house.
So f#ck him, shouldn't have done it should he!!

SpareBoxRoomForEmergencies · 16/02/2025 17:46

Do you like Karaoke OP? There is a list of songs on the internet with the word Go, Snow or No in the title. Replace any of those with the word TOW.

You could position your Alexa speaker near an open window then when he rocks up scratching his head and getting all irate you can sing really loudly out of the window to him.

You could have:

Tow Now! by the Moody Blues.

Wake me up before you Tow Tow, Wham.

Tow your own way. Fleetwood Mac.

Tow Regrets. Robbie Williams.

Frosty the Towman (very topical)

The possibilities are endless.

Cheers. <chinks second glass of Amaretto>

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/02/2025 17:46

I do actually feel slightly bad now. I never actually thought a tow truck would turn up if I'm honest!

Well what did you think was going to happen when they said a tow truck would be sent.

That's like saying "I voted leave, but didn't think it would really happen".

Funnywonder · 16/02/2025 17:47

So you think @MJconfessions that the police only respond to a crime when someone is inconvenienced by it? It doesn't matter what the OP said or didn't say. The driver was illegally parked. They deserved to be towed away. And hopefully they won't do it again. That's one of the points of issuing a punishment. Deterrence.

Moveoverdarlin · 16/02/2025 17:47

Out of interest, when he got back to the car and saw it wasn’t there how does he know who to ring? Do the tow truck people leave a calling card or sticker or something? Where do they leave it??? Or is he contactable through his reg plate? How does it work?

sleepwouldbenice · 16/02/2025 17:48

Lougle · 16/02/2025 17:27

I'm not saying I think @Parkingdrama00 was wrong to call the police. I'm not saying that the car should not have been towed. I am just capable of seeing the other side of a situation and feeling a little sympathy for someone who made a bad decision that has spiralled into a huge problem. Their probably rash decision to block a driveway will cause inconvenience and expense way beyond their expectation and I can imagine that they didn't forsee it at all.

They're learning an expensive lesson, and to be honest, their mates will probably be glad that they've learned it for them.

Oh dear

itsrainingonmywashing · 16/02/2025 17:48

Read update, nice one OP 👏But so many people on here now need to calm down and untwist their knickers about illegal parking. It was fun but now it's just tedious, banging on and repeating everything.
Leaving the thread so doesn't matter what happens now.

2025willbemytime · 16/02/2025 17:50

Can you say what colour the car was?

Glorybox2025 · 16/02/2025 17:51

DreamW3aver · 16/02/2025 17:09

I'm not mad in the slightest and I'm not saying they dont deserve some form of negative consequences but the cost and potential knock on effects aren't proportionate to the offence imo

Oh they absolutely ARE proportional. This was a disgustingly selfish and stupid thing to do, absolutely avoidable arseholery and now they are going to be totally fucked as a consequence of their own shitty behaviour. The punishment absolutely fits the crime. They won't do it again!
